To secure a sustainable economic growth it is important to embark upon systemic changes, radical reforms which the Armenian authorities do not have enough courage to implement, an opposition MP from the Prosperous Armenia party said Tuesday, commenting upon the economic policies pursued by the current government.
In an interview with Tert.am, Sergey Bagratyan stressed particilarly the importance of radical tax reforms and real steps towards addressing the economic policies.
“Unless we secure the formation for new platforms for economic policies, we cannot possibly expect a surge in economic development or a double-digit economic growth. We need, therefore, legislative changes to ensure the liberalization of all the branches of the economy and free competition to be able to create an economic platform. The authorities’ focus on one direction alone is nonsense when it comes to the ability to secure a real economic growth. It will not work unless real steps are undertaken,” he warned.
Bagratyan attributed the existing concerns to a kind of uncertainty about securing the expected development.
“The authorities, being the bearer of a political revolution, experience a kind of fear and wariness in the economic sector, as any political change may mark a turning point should it stop short of ensuring the necessary economic development. They deal with the aspirations shaped in the wake of the revolution, which our citizens virtually expect (well-being, growth, etc). But there aren’t adequate political changes to achieve that. It is important to apply the tools for changing the existing [resources] also to economy, as developing the economy is unfeasible with the same stakeholders and the same rules of game in place,” he added.
