Moscow sends chemical arms plan to the US
(ANSAmed) – NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 11 – Russia is waiting for a meeting scheduled in Geneva on Thursday between its Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry before taking action at the United Nations, UN diplomatic sources said Wednesday. The sources said this is the reason why a UN Security Council meeting scheduled on Tuesday at Moscow’s request was cancelled. The request was withdrawn, according to a message sent to the president of the 15-member Council, due to ‘changed circumstances’.
Russia was reportedly irritated that the UN Charter’s Chapter 7 was mentioned in France’s draft resolution, which provides for the possibility of using force as a last resort in case the document is not respected. It also blamed Damascus for the chemical attack on August 21.
Meanwhile, Moscow has transmitted to the United States its plan to place Syria’s chemical weapons under the international community’s control, a source was quoted as saying on Wednesday by the Itar-Tass news agency. The source said the objective is for Lavrov and Kerry to discuss the plan tomorrow in Geneva. (ANSAmed)
