Puntland government said in a statement on Saturday that a ship carrying food aid from capital Mogadishu to what it said “specific districts of Puntland” arrived in Port of Bossaso but the Puntland government was not notified about the shipment beforehand.
The statement said the shipment was made in an “illegal manner” and that the “intentional bypassing of Puntland Government is clear violation by Federal Government against Puntland Government and its laws.”
It said the government of Puntland nominated a committee composed of ministers to assess the situation and decided to send the shipment back to Mogadishu. The ministerial committee said “political interests” involved in the shipment of aid.
It noted that it has become clear that the shipment was part of Mogadishu government’s “political manipulation”that violated the federal and Puntland constitution.
The committee also expressed disappointment with the Turkish Red Crescent office in Mogadishu, which asked to provide security from the federal government.
“Puntland Government will soon send an official letter to Turkish Red Crescent and the Turkish Government to provide clarification on this politicized violation that Turkey has become part of,” the statement noted.
