If Bashar al-Assad loses the June 3 presidential elections and new forces come to power in Syria, no Christians will remain in the Arab world, political scientist Levon Melik-Shahnazaryan said at a conference titled “Syria: Terrorism, Armenians, Elections” organized by Voskanapat analytical center.
According to him, if Assad is elected president and the election results are recognized as legitimate, attempts will be made to establish peace in the country. “But many forces do not want peace to be established in the country,” he said.
Deputy chairman of the Social Democrat Hunchakian Party (SDHP) Armenia office Vazgen Mesropyan said for his part that 80-100 ethnic Armenians have died during the Syrian war, including 5 soldiers of the Syrian army.
MP Edmon Marukyan noted that the results of the Syrian elections will not be recognized as legitimate and at best, they will be recognized by 2-3 states.
