Russia-Turkey stand-off poses a great risk not only to the relationship of those two countries, but also to the entire world, especially to Europe and Asia, the head of Armenian parliament’s standing committee on foreign relations , an MP of the faction of the ruling Republican party of Armenia (RPA) Artak Zakaryan said today during discussion at Media Center of Yerevan.
“What derivate effects can Russia-Turkey tensions have? I don’t believe that the derivative effects will impact directly and change the situation related to the Karabakh conflict. By ‘a change in the situation’, I mean a shift from the negotiations to military operations. There can be no changes of a different kind”, Zakaryan noted.
According to him, the situation may change in one case: if as a result of a military clash between Russia and Turkey, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, being aware of his last chance, will take advantage of the emerging situation and ‘tempt his fate and that of the Azerbaijani people”.
Even more problems will arise in the region under such circumstances, Zakaryan added.
MP of the opposition ‘Heritage’ faction, ex-Foreign Minister of Armenia Alexander Arzumanyan said for his part: “The Karabakh conflict settlement process is always in danger if the situation escalates on Russia’s initiative”.
“If the situation escalates on Turkey’s initiative, it means that Russia will fully support the army of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic. In other words, if it is Russia that provokes, then there is a danger, and if Turkey attempts to escalate the situation, in this case solutions to the issues could be found much more rapidly,” Arzumanyan explained.
