Switzerland withdrawing bid to join EU

June 16, 2016 By administrator

f576262e5392f0_576262e539326.thumbThe Swiss parliament on Wednesday voted to officially withdraw the country’s dormant application to join the European Union, Politico.eu reports.
Following a vote in the lower house, the government will now tell the EU to “consider [the application] as withdrawn,” Swiss Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter was quoted as saying by the Neue Zürcher Zeitung.
Burkhalter had earlier said the application, which was sent to the European Economic Community in 1992, was already invalid.
In 1992, the Swiss rejected joining the European Economic Area, of which Iceland, Norway and Lichtenstein are members and have access to the EU single market.
At the time, the Swiss government backed EU membership, but Swiss voters rejected the EU bid months later. The application has remained dormant ever since.

Joint Russian-Armenian Air Defense Shield to Cover Middle East

November 12, 2015 By administrator

1024655095(sputniknews) A joint Russian and Armenian air defense system project was launched long ago and is not connected to the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East. Nevertheless, the crisis in the region proves the necessity of such measures, political analyst Sergei Minasyan said.

Russia President Vladimir Putin ordered to sign an agreement on the creation of a joint air defense system of Russia and Armenia. The decree was published Wednesday. The system will allow for protecting the airspace far to the south of the Russian borders, political analyst Sergei Minasyan said.

“The system will comprise air defenses and Russian combat jets deployed to the Southern Military District. This would allow for monitoring the airspace far from the Armenian borders. The system will also help modernize Armenian air defenses and improve their operational range,” Minasyan told Sputnik Radio.

The deployment of air defense missile systems, radio-radars and jet fighters to Armenia will allow for protecting the airspace far from the Russian borders, including in the Middle East, he pointed out.

According to him, the initiative was launched long ago.

“It has been in the development for over 10 years. And now it’s just a coincidence with the Syrian conflict. The situation in the so-called Greater Middle East just proves that the measures are effective,” the analyst said.

Minasyan underscored that Moscow and Yerevan laid groundwork for the project back in the 1990s.

“From political and strategic points of view there have been no significant changes. The system still works. Russia and Armenia coordinate their actions in patrolling the airspace. The new joint air defense system would just be more effective,” he said.

Sere Kaniye, Syria – Dozens of fighters from different nationalities have joined the ranks of the Kurdish forces in Syria and Iraq in order to combat militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS).

An Armenian fighter in the ranks of the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), nicknamed Barkhodan, came to Syria nearly two years ago and joint the fight against ISIS.

“I am 55 years old, I came to Syria along with 70 Armenian young men, and we joined the ranks of the YPG more than two years ago,” he told ARA News, pointing out that they have been deployed on various positions at battle fronts in accordance with their military expertise.

“We are fighting here in defense of the Armenian people from the risk of IS extremists, we do not differentiate between Arabs, Kurds, Christians and Muslims,” he said.

“The main reason for many foreign fighters to be here (northern Syria) is the necessity to eliminate the enemies of humanity (in reference to ISIS militants).”

“ISIS is killing women and children. What happened in Kobane several days ago when they killed hundreds of innocent people is the biggest motivation for me to fight those barbarians, despite my old age,” Barkhodan told ARA News.

“When we fight alongside the YPG forces, this actually raises the overall morale among Kurds in the war on terrorism,” he added.

In Syria, hundreds of foreign members of the YPG have formed what is known as “Lions of Rojava” (Lions of Syrian Kurdistan). They combat ISIS in several areas in Syria’s Kurdish region alongside Kurdish forces.

Recently, foreign fighters of YPG formed a battalion under the banner “World Freedom” in Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain), northeastern Syria, which includes dozens of fighters who were distributed at the anti-ISIS fighting fronts after having completed military training in YPG-held camps.

Egypt to join EEU in 2016 – ambassador

June 2, 2015 By administrator

eygept-join-eeuEgypt intends to establish a free trade zone with the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), comprising Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Armenia, by the end of 2016, the Egyptian ambassador to Russia told Sputnik.

A free trade zone deal between the sides was discussed in February during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Cairo. Egypt sent an official request to establish a free trade zone with the EEU last year.

“There is a kick-off already in the negotiation process and we estimate that it is going to take from 12-18 months,” Mohamed Elbadri told Sputnik.

At this stage of negotiations, the envoy added, each party will study the benefits of mutual cooperation before entering into direct talks regarding the details of the agreement.

The treaty should cover all trade in commodities between the countries.

The Russia-led EEU officially came into force on January 1. The bloc aims to achieve the free flow of goods, services, capital and labor across its member states, with provisions for a greater integration in the future.

Last week, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev approved a free trade zone agreement between the EEU and Vietnam.

Three sons of Turkish professor join ISIL

March 20, 2015 By administrator

Fevzi Kızılkoyun – ANKARA

“Promised Heaven,”

Before they crossed the border, Süleyman Bengi İ., the eldest of the three brothers, shared pro-ISIL material on his Facebook account. “I will come to disturb your gods,” one visual he shared reads. Report Hürriyet

Three sons of an assistant professor at a Turkish university have joined the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Hürriyet has learned.

The assistant professor, whom Hürriyet identifies only as M. Şefik İ. to avoid possible repercussions that may risk his safety, has appealed to the government for help, but security forces determined that his sons have already crossed to Syria.

According to the investigation, 19-year-old Hacettepe University student Süleyman Bengi İ. led his 16-year-old twin brothers, Dilar and Dilşat, in their venture to join ISIL. After crossing Turkey’s border with Syria, the three teenagers continued to Iraq to join the ranks of ISIL there, Turkey’s National Intelligence Agency (MİT) revealed.

“We have found peace here, don’t worry about us,” Süleyman Bengi İ. sent in a message to his family after they crossed the border.

The family, on the other hand, have called on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, the MİT and the police to bring their sons back to Turkey.

‘Promised Heaven’

Turkish authorities continue diplomatic efforts to bring back the three brothers who are still in an ISIL-controlled area of Iraq. Meanwhile, police and intelligence officers are investigating whom Süleyman Bengi İ. contacted in Ankara to cross the border.

Before leaving his dorm in Ankara, Süleyman Bengi İ., a dentist candidate, left a note for his family, urging his mother to distribute the belongings he left behind to the poor.

Those who know him told Hürriyet he was a successful student who was radicalized after he started to visit Islamist bookstores. The change in his personality became more dramatic after he read a book titled “Promised Heaven,” which he also distributed to his friends.

A billboard poster prepared by the family says that Süleyman Bengi went missing in Ankara, while his brothers went missing in Diyarbakır, on March 10.

Dire situation in numbers

A Hürriyet investigation in September 2014 revealed a number of Islamic associations and bookstores which had popped up across Turkey had become one of the main recruiting tools of ISIL in the country.

Turkish intelligence recently sent a report to Turkey’s associations watchdog, determining that seven associations and foundations should be scrutinized for their suspicious activities.

So far 2,307 Turkish citizens have joined ISIL, according to official figures, with some 700 more linked to the group. Around 1,500 of them still live in the ISIL-controlled areas of Syria and Iraq and most of them are fighting in the ranks of the jihadists.

In 2014 and the first three months of 2015, 680 families in Turkey reported their children went missing to join ISIL.

Officials say 11 Turks have died so far while fighting for the group.

12,000 Turks joined extremist, terrorist groups in Syria, Turkish think tank says

January 12, 2015 By administrator

014b3ec9-5b0b-4ac6-aa04-bb77606c169eA Turkish think tank has said that 12,000 Turks have joined extremist and terrorist groups such as ISIL and the al-Nusra Front in Syria.

Ismail Hakki Pekin, a veteran serviceman and a researcher with the Ankara-based 21st Century Turkey Institute, who has prepared the report, says Turkey has turned into the main base for armed extremist groups.

He said Turkey is the passageway for thousands of armed forces into Syria and the ruling Turkish Justice and Development Party directly provides military and logistical support for ISIL and other armed groups.

Atilla Kart, a member of Turkey’s Republican People’s Party, has said 3,000 people have joined ISIL from the southern Turkey city of Konya, while the Turkish government knows and ignores this.

Speaking to the Turkish paper, Sözcü, the lawmaker said ISIL uses its office in the city to recruit armed people.

Turkey has time and time again been accused of backing the ISIL terrorists in Syria.

ISIL controls parts of Iraq and Syria. The terrorists are engaged in crimes against humanity in the areas under their control. They have terrorized and killed people of all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, and Christians.

Legislator: 53 Turkish Families Joined IS

September 19, 2014 By administrator

AP_logo_update_20130709A Turkish opposition legislator said Tuesday that at least 53 Turkish families — some with children — had crossed into Syria to join the Islamic State group in the past week alone and accused Turkey’s government of doing little to stem the flow.

Comments by Atilla Kart, a member of main opposition Republican People’s Party, came hours after Turkey’s new prime minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, strongly rejected Western media reports that said many Turks were swelling the ranks of the jihadi group.

Kart told The Associated Press that at least 16 people from his constituency of Konya, in central Turkey, had traveled to a recruiting center at Turkey’s border with Syria where they met up with other families, some with children. They were then smuggled across the border in small groups, Kart said.

He said the information was based on some family members of the 16 and on security officials who confirmed that the group had traveled to the border. Interior Ministry officials didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Speaking at a news conference during a visit to Cyprus, Davutoglu said there were many more people from other European countries signing up with the extremist group than there are Turks and insisted that Turkey was doing all it could to prevent the flow of potential Islamic State recruits.

Kart refuted that statement.

“Participation from Turkey is so high, there can be no comparison with other countries,” he said.

The legislator said the Islamic State group was probably recruiting families with the aim of using them as “human shields” against possible attacks.

Davutoglu said he has asked European countries for closer cooperation to stem the flow of foreign fighters into Syria.

But he said Turkey’s border with Syria remains open to accommodate hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing the fighting there.
