Second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan on Saturday issued a congratulatory message on the occasion of Army Day.

“Congratulations on Armenian Army Day. Our army goes through daily trials. It seems that nothing is being done for the army to finally straighten [its] back. I want to believe that this situation will be corrected, and the Armenian army will regain the position of the guarantor of the security of Armenia and Artsakh [(Nagorno-Karabakh)],” the message reads.

Russia says it is building a bipolar or multipolar world, where there will be other power centers besides the US or the collective West led by the US: Russia, China, or both. In order to become a pole of power, Russia needs not only to get out of the influence of the West but also to bring back the territories previously under its control, that have come under the influence of the West.

The war against Ukraine is one of the manifestations of that struggle. Without the return of these territories or at least most of them, Russia cannot gain a geopolitical pole or a superpower status, because a superpower first of all means having spheres of influence. You probably remember the titles king and king from the king. the king of the king was the one whose sovereignty was recognized by other kings. Now the terminology has changed a bit, but the content remains the same.

Armenia is such a sphere of influence for Russia, Artsakh is also such a sphere of influence. Russia entered Artsakh to expand its influence in the South Caucasus. Nikol Pashinyan’s government wants to get Russia out of Armenia, and Pashinyan made this clear during a January 10 press conference, saying that Russia’s military presence poses a threat to Armenia’s security. Until then, it was accepted that the Russian military base and the strategic alliance with Russia are the most important components of Armenia’s security. Pashinyan, as the government of Armenia, for the first time considered Russia and the Russian military presence in our country as a threat to Armenia’s security. Nikol no longer wants to recognize Russia’s sovereignty and wants to remove the Russian army from the territory of Armenia.

After abandoning military exercises with the CSTO and presenting a military threat to Russia, it seems that the next logical step should have been to neutralize that military threat. At the same time, neutralize radically. If Armenia leaves the CSTO, it will no longer receive an offer to hold CSTO military exercises on the territory of Armenia. If Armenia breaks the agreements with Russia based on which Russia keeps its military base here, it will also neutralize that threat. Why, then, does Pashinyan not take such a step, why does he not withdraw Armenia from the CSTO, does he not break the agreements with Russia, which has become a threat to us, based on which Russia keeps troops here?

Pashinyan would do it, he is just afraid, he was scared. After threatening Russia, the Russians directly threatened it, and if that threat escaped the attention of most of the Armenian society, it definitely did not escape the attention of Pashinyan. A few days after Pashinyan’s press conference, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova literally called him an “adventurer” and urged him to think about the consequences. Declaring that the centuries-old friendship unites the Armenian and Russian peoples, and their roots go deep into history, Zakharova announced that Russia intends to continue multilaterally strengthening bilateral relations, as well as cooperation within the framework of multilateral integration associations: CSTO, EAEU, CIS.

Zakharova said simply: “Do not hope that we will allow you to leave the CSTO or EAEU.” “The statements from Yerevan, as if the Russian presence poses a threat to Armenia’s security, are nonsense. For decades, our soldiers and border guards have made a significant contribution to ensuring the security of Armenia by protecting its borders, which is an objective reality that cannot be denied. Moreover, the current leadership of Armenia publicly declared that Russia’s military presence corresponds to Armenia’s national interests. And here are the adventurers who are calling to show our military the door, obviously they don’t consider the real consequences of such steps.”

We have been waiting for almost 10 days that the RA government will respond to Zakharova’s obviously offensive and threatening statement at least at the level of the Foreign Ministry spokesperson. There was no answer, unless we count the fact that after Zakharova’s statement, Pashinyan did not make a new anti-Russian statement, perhaps understanding what consequences Russia was referring to. Especially since the consequences are not related to Armenia, but to the adventurer or adventurers.
Perhaps Pashinyan has understood that if he continues his anti-Russian rhetoric, he will endlessly aggravate both himself and his government. Because it is one thing when a representative of a party speaks against the Russian military presence, another thing when the actual leader of the country does it. We already wrote once that if Pashinyan decides to withdraw from the CSTO and the strategic alliance with Russia, that decision will remain in the air. Russia will not withdraw its troops from Armenia. There will be dozens of justifications. But if making decisions not to put salt pans on restaurant tables or subjecting gas cylinders to compulsory examination discredits the government only within the country, then the failure to implement the decision to remove the Russian military base will show that Pashinyan has no power in Armenia at all.

There can be no doubt that the Russians will not leave. In Ukraine, they are killing tens of thousands of soldiers to bring that country back under their control. Why should they take it and leave Armenia peacefully? It is true that the international community will make statements and appeals to Russia to respect Armenia’s sovereignty, but neither Armenia nor Pashinyan’s government will benefit from this. Russia will definitely not respect Armenia’s sovereignty, just as it does not respect Georgia’s, Ukraine’s, Moldova’s, but Pashinyan may lose his power.

If until now Pashinyan was considered a capitulator and a traitor to national interests within the country, then at least for Russia he is now an adventurer who is threatened with very serious consequences. Only he won’t dare to tell the Russian authorities that you are the adventurer and the ones talking nonsense. The patrols will hardly protect Pashinyan from Russia.

During the meetings the Minister talked about the crisis situation created in the NKR as a result of the Azeri blockade and its influence, introduced the works implemented by the Operational Staff as well as the steps in various fields and spheres aimed at lifting the aforementioned blockade.

The questions of the Martuni participants mainly related to the existing situation around Nagorno-Karabakh, security of the country and its future. Answering the questions Ruben Vardanyan reiterated that it is necessary to continue the fight. And by all possible means and tools in this situation:

“Struggle doesn’t mean war. Struggle means disagreement with the path offered to us by Azerbaijan. We will not leave our homeland, despite all the difficulties,” said the Head of the Government.

Responding to a question about the expected assistance, the State Minister, in particular, said: “We should not rely on anyone, sit back and do nothing.”

“First and foremost, we must do our job, and only then expect help. If you do nothing and just hope for others – nothing will work. But if you fight and do something, that creates a completely different situation,” Vardanyan stressed.

The participants of the meeting noted that they support this point of view. Moreover, they said that under no circumstances are they going to leave their motherland and their homes.

A Turkish nationalist claimed responsibility for the bomb threat at Athens International Airport on Friday.

A person claiming to be a Turkish nationalist and a friend of the Russian prankster, who on Tuesday morning sent bomb threats against Athens International Airport and six hospitals in Athens through an email, took responsibility for today’s bomb scare.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors convened on Tuesday, January 24th to discuss a motion calling for an end to the blockade of the Lachin corridor, the sole route that connects Artsakh with the rest of the world.

The motion was spearheaded by Supervisors Kathryn Barger and Lindsey Horvath as an urgent plea to the Chief Executive Office’s Legislative Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations Branches to send a letter to President Biden demanding that the Administration take steps to bring an immediate end to Azerbaijan’s illegal blockade.

After 46 days of ongoing blockade, with the threat of famine and medical emergencies looming, the United States has failed to send aid to those in Artsakh or to sanction Azerbaijan. The motion’s proposal, along with stressing the increasing humanitarian crisis in Artsakh and the danger of inaction, calls for the President to:

1. Demand the immediate re-opening of the Lachin Corridor and access to the Nagorno-Karabakh region;
2. Provide humanitarian assistance for the Armenian people impacted by the Azerbaijani blockade of the Lachin Corridor, including food, supplies and medical assistance; and,
3. Introduce a UN Security Council Resolution to establish a United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Nagorno Karabakh and,
4. End all U.S. military and economic assistance to Azerbaijan and take all necessary steps to hold the Azerbaijan regime accountable for its crimes, including by using the tools provided by the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act.

Supervisors Barger and Horvath introduced the motion to the rest of the Board and to community members in attendance. “We must continue to condemn the attacks on Armenia, and stand in solidarity with the Armenian people. The facts are, the Azerbaijani government is purposely cutting off Artsakh, and trying to once again (commit) genocide,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. She emphasized the Board’s historical stance on Armenian issues – having sponsored multiple motions supporting Armenians in the past. Supervisor Lindsey Horvath added, “It’s sad that we have to keep speaking out on this issue … we know today, and every day, more must be done.”

Several representatives of the Armenian National Committee of America Western Region (ANCA-WR) and other advocates of Armenian-American issues testified in support of the motion, offering information and requesting support from the five supervisors in passing the motion.

“Azerbaijan’s continuous aggression towards Artsakh demonstrates why remedial secession based on the principles of [extraterritorial] self-determination guaranteed by the United Nations Charter is an absolute necessity for the people of Artsakh,” said Ruben Karapetian, ANCA-WR Government Affairs Coordinator. “We cannot allow tyrants like Ilham Aliyev, by the threat of isolation and starvation, or worse, genocide, to uproot people from their ancestral homeland,”

The motion carried after all five members of the Board of Supervisors, including Supervisors Holly Mitchell, Hilda Solis, and Janice Hahn voted to pass the motion.

“The ANCA Western Region is grateful to Supervisors Barger and Horvath and their colleagues for their principled stand in leading this important motion calling for the Biden Administration to do more to protect and support the besieged Armenians of Artsakh and to hold the dictatorial regime of Azerbaijan accountable for its ongoing human rights violations and illegal blockade,” said ANCA-WR Chair Nora Hovsepian, Esq. “The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, representing the largest Armenian community outside Armenia, has consistently supported our issues and is a valuable voice in calling attention to all aspects of the Armenian Cause. We look forward to continuing our collaborative work and constructive relationship with the Board of Supervisors,” she added.

We are starving and freezing before the eyes of the whole world! We are under a blockade by Azerbaijan which is stealing our gas and electricity. This is simply energy terrorism.

Mrs. von der Leyen, last summer you signed an agreement on increasing gas supplies from Azerbaijan to the EU. The children of Europe will not freeze now, while our children cannot attend kindergartens and schools because we have no heating. Our doctors cannot perform operations and save lives. Our population of 120,000 people is held captive by Aliyev.

Azerbaijan, at will, shuts off our gas and our electricity which are supplied by Armenia. Aliyev cuts our pipes and electricity wires.

The Lachin corridor, our only connection to the world, has been blockaded by Azerbaijan since 12 December. Our children have been left without:

• Food
• Electricity
• Heat
• Access to medical supplies and treatment
• Opportunities to study
• And their right to the future and to life.

We can endure a lot for the sake of our children, but we need urgent help, and we need a voice. We will not allow our children to be killed in silence.

We write to you as the most powerful woman in the world but also as a mother who loves her seven children and deeply cherishes her precious family. From the bottom of our hearts, we urge you to stand with the women and children of Artsakh and do everything in your power to prevent Azerbaijan continuing with its cruel blockade.
