More than 1,500 people injured by Turkish security forces in 2014, says report,

Some 1,539 people, including 112 children, were injured by Turkey’s security forces at protests in 2014, while 11,262 people were detained, including 241 refugees, a recent report has revealed.

The Human Rights Association’s (IHD) report, titled the 2014 Human Rights Breaches Report, revealed that a total of 3,401 people were victims of torture, ill treatment, humiliation, or unjust punishment in Turkey in 2014, while 1,021 of those people were subjected to torture or ill treatment while in custody.
Documentation from the İHD also once again displayed the perilous extent of violence against women in Turkey.

“In 2014, 296 women were killed, 39 women committed suicide, 191 women were victims of sexual assault or rape, 585 women were taken to hospital after being beaten or injured and six women were victims of honor killings, while 13 women died in suspicious circumstances,” Songül Erol Abdil of the İHD said on March 5.  report Hurriyet

Some 44 children were killed, while 219 children were injured in violent incidents.

Honor killings, which remain a serious problem in Turkish society, also took place last year. While six women were reportedly killed in honor killings, two men were killed in “honor attacks.” Six people were killed in hate crimes, while 17 were injured in hate crimes.

The report was prepared by gathering personal applications to İHD branches, reports from İHD branches’ human rights watch and research commissions, news that appeared on local and national media outlets, and reports from other NGOs and state institutions.

Some 64 out of the 1,021 people who were subjected to torture or ill treatment while in custody were children, while 23 out of a total 213 people who were tortured or ill-treated in places outside of custody were children.

The report also showed that 235 convicts were tortured or victims of maltreatment in jails, 54 of whom were underage children.

Special security officers also applied torture and maltreated 19 people.

The number of refugees and immigrants detained in 2014 was 241, of whom 22 were children.

Armenia’s nuclear security regime robust, IAEA concludes

December 15, 2014 By administrator

186140A team of International Atomic Energy Agency experts completed a mission to review national nuclear security practices in Armenia, IAEA website reported.

The IAEA conducted a two-week International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) mission at the request of Armenia’s Government. The mission reviewed the country’s nuclear security-related legislative and regulatory framework for nuclear and other radioactive material and associated facilities and activities, as well as security arrangements applied to the transport of radioactive sources. report by PanARMENIAN.Net

The team also reviewed physical protection systems at the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and at three facilities where high activity sources are used or stored.

The IPPAS team concluded that Armenia’s nuclear security regime is robust and that important progress has been made in enhancing nuclear security since a previous IPPAS mission in 2003. The team also identified several good practices in the national nuclear security regime and at the visited facilities. At the same time, it made recommendations and suggestions for further improvements in nuclear security.

“The development of a nuclear power programme requires a strong commitment to security. Armenia provides an example that demonstrates the value of international cooperation, the importance of applying IAEA Security Standards, and how best to make use of the Agency’s advisory services,” said Carlos Torres Vidal, Head of the IAEA’s Nuclear Security of Materials and Facilities Section.

Ashot Martirosyan, the Chairman of Armenia’s Nuclear Regulatory Authority, added: “The IPPAS mission was very useful in improving Armenia’s nuclear security regime. Armenia will establish an action plan and will implement the recommendations and suggestions in the near future.”

The IAEA team was led by Nancy Fragoyannis, a Senior Level Advisor for Non-proliferation and International Nuclear Security at the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission. It included seven experts from five countries and the IAEA.

While in Yerevan, the team met officials from the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (State Committee for Nuclear Safety Regulation under the Armenian Government); the National Security Service; the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources; and the Foreign Ministry and the National Police. They also visited the Armenian NPP; the radioactive waste facility “Rendering Harmless of Radioactive Wastes” CJSC; and the “National Centre of Oncology after V.A. Fanarjyan.”

Turkey’s top security body lists Gülenists as threat against national security

Turkey’s top national security body has publicly documented the movement of U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, referred to by government officials as the “parallel state,” as one of the leading threats against the country’s national security. Report hurriyet

“Matters related to our country’s security, our people’s serenity and public order have been discussed in detail. Within this content, it has been emphasized that the struggle against parallel structures and illegal formations, which threaten our national security and disrupt public order and conduct illegal activity with internally and externally legal images, will be continued with determination,” the National Security Council (MGK) said in a written statement released late on Oct. 30 following its lengthy bimonthly meeting.

The almost 10.5-hour meeting marked the longest ever meeting of the council, which brings together the country’s top civilian and military leaders. It was also the first MGK meeting chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in his current capacity, although he participated in numerous meetings during his prime ministry from March 2003 until being elected as president in August.

The fight between erstwhile allies Erdoğan and Gülen began late last year after a massive corruption and graft investigation against four ministers led by Istanbul prosecutors went public. The Justice and Development Party (AKP) government says the operation was a plot carried out by prosecutors and police officers loyal to Gülen, a 73-year-old preacher who has lived in self-imposed exile in the United States since 1997, aiming to topple Erdoğan and his government.

The Gülenists, who have been accused of forming a “parallel structure” within the state, have also been charged with illegally eavesdropping on hundreds of thousands of people through operations by members employed in the judiciary and the police.

Since the probe broke, thousands of prosecutors and police officers have been removed from their previous positions, with pro-government prosecutors now probing the activities of the “parallel state.”

Armenia Peace and security not guaranteed, but achieved – Ashot Minasyan

August 19, 2014 By administrator

Armenia should not expect its interest concur with those of great powers for them to curb Azerbaijan’s aggression, commander Ashot-minasyanof the Sisakan detachment, reserved Colonel Ashot Minasyan told Tert.am.

Mr Minasyan, some claim that the Armenian-Azerbaijani-Russian presidential meeting in Sochi did not produce any results, and the current peace is only temporary. What is your opinion?

Yes, the Sochi meeting did not change anything. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stuck to their opinions. I fully agree that the present peace is temporary. Therefore, we should not sit and wait for Azerbaijan’s decision to kill more of our boys. Nor should we wait for our interests to concur with those of great powers for them to curb Azerbaijan’s aggression. Peace and security are not guaranteed. Rather, they must be achieved.

What can be done to establish peace and security?

Azerbaijan is implementing a bellicose anti-Armenian policy, and Azerbaijan’s president publicly states that the first stage of the war is over (thereby preparing Azerbaijan’s population for war). He is destabilizing the situation on the border by provoking military operations. He is even laying claims to Armenia’s capital, Yerevan. After all this, when, pursuing its own interests, the international community pats Azerbaijan on the back. We ourselves must restore the Kura-Aras boundary, which is the natural borderline of the Armenian plateau.

During the Artsakh war, the Armenian forces succeeded in making the second Armenian republic start bordering on Iran. And the regions liberated thanks to the blood of our brave guys are the only guarantee of our security. However, we must not be contented, with Azerbaijan’s threats – both in word and as military operations – have reached the highest point. It is time to reach the Kura-Aras boundary. We must ensure both the states’ security, using the potential of the Armenian plateau.

Gülen movement to be added to top-secret national security ‘Red Book’

July 20, 2014 By administrator

ANKARA

Hurriyet daily news Report, The movement of U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, referred to by government officials as the “parallel state,” will be added to Turkey’s top-secret national security document, gulen-red-bookknown as the “Red Book,” Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has announced.

“An organization that threatens our national security will of course take its place in it [the Red Book]. The fight against [this organization] has become one of priorities of the state,” Erdoğan told private broadcaster TGRT on July 20, adding that the fight against the “parallel structure” had also been recently discussed at the National Security Council (MGK), the country’s top security board.

The Red Book national security document lists Turkey’s perceived domestic and external threats, and is updated by the MGK when necessary. It was last updated in 2010.

Erdoğan, who is currently running to become Turkey’s first ever directly-elected president in next month’s election, linked the anti-Gülen struggle to the unity and integrity of the country. “I will follow this fight [against this organization] if I am elected president. This is because my people have suffered [from this organization], I know this,” he said.

The fight between one-time-allies the Erdoğan government and the Gülen movement began late last year after a massive corruption and graft investigation against four ministers led by Istanbul prosecutors went public. The government states that the operation was a plot carried out by prosecutors and police officers loyal to Gülen, aiming to topple Erdoğan and his government. Since the probe broke, thousands of prosecutors and police officers have been removed from their previous positions, with pro-government prosecutors now probing the activities of the “parallel state.”

Moscow urges UNSC to discuss Syrian rebels’ siege of Christian town of Kessab

April 2, 2014 By administrator

April 01, 2014

RT Russia urged the UN Security Council to discuss the situation in Syria’s Christian majority town of Kessab, after Al-Qaeda-linked militants reportedly attacked the town, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.

Kessab Syriai“The UN Security Council should discuss the situation in Kessab and give it a principled evaluation,” it stated. “We condemn extremists’ actions in Syria. We believe that the Syrian government and the opposition should join efforts to eradicate terrorism on the Syrian land.”

On March 21, jihadists reportedly crossed into Syria from Turkey and seized the town in Latakia province, home to over 2,000 ethnic Armenians. The attack caused hundreds of local families, mainly Armenian, to flee their homes and seek shelter in the city of Latakia.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry noted that there were no military objects on the attacked territory and added that the only fault of the families, who were forced to flee, was their loyalty to Syria’s government.

Syria’s permanent representative to the UN, Bashar Jaafari, told RT Arabic that Syria is hoping the UN will help resolve the situation in Kessab. In the past week, Syria sent five letters to the UN Security Council and the General Secretary. “These letters contain detailed information about Turkish direct involvement in the crisis by providing protection to terrorist groups that are operating in the Kessab area,” Jaafari said.

He further added that military groups managed to get to Kessab under the cover of Turkish artillery strikes, Turkish aviation, and tanks, which were all used as a distraction.

“This allowed the terrorists to avoid direct clashes with the Syrian army…unleashed [the terrorists’] hands to carry out their heinous, unspeakable crimes.”

Earlier, the Armenian government also called on the UN to protect Kessab, evoked the Armenian genocide of 1915, and accused Turkey of allowing jihadists cross its border to attack Kessab. In turn, Ankara slammed the accusations and condemned the charge as “confrontational political propaganda.”

The attack on Kessab was reportedly carried out by fighters from the Al-Nusra Front, an Al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group in Syria, and the Islamist Ahrar al-Sham brigade, part of the Islamic Front alliance.

Earlier this week, the Syrian army launched an operation to force the militants out of the town.

The situation escalated on March 23 when Turkey shot down a Syrian Air Force jet at the Kessab crossing. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the plane was intercepted after it violated his country’s airspace.

In response, Damascus accused Ankara of “blatant aggression,” saying the fighter jet had been over Syria. The Syrian pilot said a Turksih aircraft fired a missile at him while he was pursuing terrorists within Syrian territories, SANA news agency reported.
