Germany has warned its citizens against traveling to Turkey, citing the risk of terrorist attacks due to an escalation of fighting in Syria.

The German Foreign Ministry advised its citizens, in a written statement released late on Sept. 26, to be aware of the possibility of terrorist attacks by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Turkey.

The statement also urged German nationals to avoid large crowds and warned of the usage of tear gas and arrests by the Turkish police in possible protests in major cities such as İstanbul, Ankara and İzmir.
