CAIRO – 27 March 2018: Women have been the trump card of the 2018 presidential election so far on the second day of the election, while many registered voters were not motivated enough to participate. Albeit, most are not sending a political message with their abstention.

It was not just media outlets that noticed the high turnout of women in the election, as most of the international NGO delegations shared the same thought in their initial statements regarding the election process.

Media outlets released several photos of women standing in lines waiting to cast their ballots. Other pictures and videos showed them dancing in front of the polling stations and raising Egypt’s flag along with pictures of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.

People abstain, not boycott
It has also been widely recognized that a considerable number of the electorate has been absent. A number of individuals who decided not to vote have expressed different reasons, and surprisingly, not all are of a political character. Rather, being registered in a city different from where he/she works, having no time and having never voted, among other reasons.

Media figures, officials and actors, have all called on Egyptians to take part in the election, calling it a national duty. Many of them went on to highlight that even if people disagree with the country’s current situation, they should look beyond their personal grievances for the country’s interest.

“Even if any person disagrees with the current regime or the country’s situation, he should exceed that and participate in the election for the country’s interest,” stressed T.V. host Amr Adib during his program on ON E channel on Monday. Hashtags emerged on Twitter on the occasion of the election, although not with much interaction. One hashtag calls on people not to vote (do not go out #ماتنزلش), attracting tweets lecturing people why they should not participate in the election. Other opposing hashtags urged people to cast their vote, mostly for Sisi.

Tight security continues, voting runs smoothly
In terms of the electoral process itself, bomb disposal experts were mobilized across Egypt’s polling stations as the country witnesses the second day of voting in the presidential election on Tuesday.

In accordance with the Ministry of Interior’s comprehensive election security plan, bomb disposal experts are also responsible for combing the areas surrounding the polling stations across Egypt, along with areas surrounding state vital institutions, churches and main streets.

On March 24, a blast that targeted Alexandria’s security chief, Major Mustafa al-Nemr, killed two policemen. Nemr survived the attack.

National Election Authority (NEA) spokesperson Mahmoud al-Sherif told Egypt Today on Tuesday that, “there have not been any complaints or obstacles during the electoral process so far and operation rooms are following the process very closely.”

Sherif added that all polling stations around the country opened at 9.00 a.m. without delay.

On Monday, the first voting day, the NEA held a press conference to review the progress of the electoral process, confirming that the national authority did not receive any complaints or obstacles. This is with the exceptional cases of three judges who suffered some illness and were replaced immediately without affecting the election process.

During the press conference, a journalist asked the NEA spokesperson about the authority’s procedures to check female voters who wear niqab. Sherif replied that the national authority deployed a female official at each polling station to check women wearing niqab.

Mosul Update: Iraq opens new frontlines in Mosul operations

October 31, 2016 By administrator

Iraqi forces have launched an offensive to advance toward the eastern borders of the city of Mosul from three new axes.

The Joint Operations Command coordinating Iraq’s war on the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group said the elite Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) and army troops launched a campaign “to advance toward the left bank of the city of Mosul from three axes.”

The Tigris River flows through Mosul; thus, Iraqis refer to the city’s eastern half as the “left bank” and its western part as the “right bank.”

A senior officer with the CTS said outside the recently-recaptured town of Bartalla that only two villages separate the Iraqi forces from Mosul.

“The target is to retake Bazwaya and Gogjali, the last two villages before Mosul,” he said, adding, “If we manage that, we’ll only be a few hundred meters from Mosul.”

The operations to liberate Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city and Daesh’s self-proclaimed headquarters in the Arab country, have entered their third week.

According to al-Sumaria news website, Iraq’s Hashd al-Shaabi forces liberated the village of Dlawya al-Sharqiya, west of Mosul, from Daesh on Monday.

A security source in Nineveh Province also said security forces took control of five villages in the northern front toward the town of Tal Kif.

A massive explosion targeted a meeting of Daesh commanders in the al-Sarjkhana area in the center of Mosul, a local source said, adding that a number of senior commanders were killed.

Iraq’s War Media Cell said Iraqi forces also managed to retake the villages of Najmom and Tal al-Yabes in northern Nineveh from Daesh.

Iraqi security forces also regained control of the villages of Tobruk and Tahrawa on the southeastern front of Mosul.

The CTS forces purged Bazwaya of the Takfiri militants and raised the Iraqi flag over its buildings.

Three villages to the southwest of Mosul were also liberated, including Mashyrfa.

The Iraqi forces also seized back the village of Tall Sikhan, west of Mosul.

The CTS said that the Iraqi forces are advancing toward the first area in the city of Mosul from the eastern side.

Lieutenant General Abdul Wahhab al-Saadi said the CTS forces are advancing toward the village of Kokjeli.

540 soldiers from Turkish naval, air forces dismissed over alleged Gülen links

Some 540 soldiers from the naval and air forces command have been temporarily dismissed over their suspected links to U.S.-based preacher Fethullah Gülen and his network, who is accused of orchestrating a failed coup in July, the Defense Ministry said.
Some 427 of the soldiers were from the air forces while the other 113 were from the naval forces.
Some 368 of those temporarily dismissed were officers.
A total of 3,699 military personnel have been dismissed from the army, according to the ministry.

66 more judges, prosecutors dismissed in coup attempt probe

Turkey’s Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK) dismissed 66 more judges and prosecutors on Oct. 5 over their links to the movement of Fethullah Gülen, the U.S.-based Islamic preacher who is seen as the main suspect behind the July 15 coup attempt.

The total number of dismissed judges and prosecutors increased to 3,456 with the latest dismissals as part of an investigation into the attempted takeover.

The previously sacked judges included Rüstem Eryılmaz, the former head of the case into the killing of Armenian-Turkish journalistHrant Dink in 2007, and Ömer Diken, the head of the former “Balyoz” (Sledgehammer) coup plot case.

Mehmet Ali Pekgüzel, the prosecutor in the Ergenekon coup plot case, was also dismissed.

The government says Gülen’s followers spent years infiltrating institutions with the goal of overthrowing the state.

255 companies seized so far in Turkey’s post-coup attempt measures: TMSF

A total of 255 companies have been seized by the Saving Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF) so far in the Turkish government’s post-coup attempt measures, TMSF President Şakir Ercan Gül has said.

“Some 255 companies have been seized so far,” said Gül in an interview on private broadcaster BloombergHT, Reuters reported.

He said the TMSF is responsible for running seized companies in the most efficient way but stressed that the process “has not been easy.”

Many companies have been appointed trustee panels or directly transferred to the TMSF over suspected links to the movement of U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, believed to be behind the failed coup attempt.

Row erupts between Nigeria, Turkey over Gülenists: Report

A row has reportedly erupted between Nigeria and Turkey over the followers of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, who is believed to have orchestrated the attempted July 15 failed coup.

According to the Nigerian government, Turkey arrested or detained a total of 52 Nigerian students receiving education in Istanbul “as a retaliatory measure” due to their suspected links to the Gülenist movement after Abuja showed unwillingness to shut down Gülen-linked schools.

Breaking: Update on escalation in Karabakh

April 2, 2016 By administrator

Emegency breakPresident of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan convenes extraordinary meeting of the National Security Council.  He says at the moment the Armenian side has 18 casualties, nearly 35 soldiers have been wounded. President says Armenia should sign agreement on mutual military assistance with Karabakh.

After pondering for a long time, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense formally accepted the first casualties announcing that 12 soldiers were killed. At present, however, Baku has admitted to the downing of solely one of its military helicopters and the destruction of just one of its tanks. In the meantime, the Nagorno-Karabakh defense army informs that the Armenian armed forces have destroyed three tanks and downed two military helicopters and two drones of the adversary.

The two Armenian boys, were wounded in the Azerbaijani shelling of the Nagorno-Karabakh settlements from late Friday night through Saturday morning, are in critical but stable condition. 11-year-old Gevorg Grigoryan and 12-year-old Vardan Andreasyan are in the intensive care unit at the children’s hospital in Stepanakert. Twelve-year-old Vaghinak Grigoryan, however, had died in this shelling.

The situation remains tense along the Karabakh-Azerbaijan Line of Contact, and the battles continue.

The international community continues reacting to the unprecedented attacks which Azerbaijan has unleashed. The OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs have issued a statement strongly condemning the use of force, and they called upon the sides to stop shooting and take all necessary measures to stabilize the situation on the ground.

The EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini likewise issued a statement on the escalation in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. She called on the parties to stop the fighting immediately and observe the ceasefire.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Edward Nalbandian, had a telephonic conversation with his Russian colleague, Sergei Lavrov, and they discussed the current situation. In addition, Lavrov called on the parties to take actions toward stopping the violence in Nagorno-Karabakh.

To remind, Azerbaijan launched outright offensive military actions along the Line of Contact between the Karabakh-Azerbaijani opposing forces, from late Friday night through Saturday morning, and using a variety of weaponry as well as artillery, armored vehicles, and air force. Not only the defensive positions of the Armenian armed forces, but also peaceful settlements were subjected to missile and artillery attacks.
