Russian Armenians focused on national problems – Viktor Konoplyev

September 25, 2016 By administrator

russian-armenian-electionRussian Armenians are far from being involved in domestic political life, political analyst Viktor Konoplyev told Tert.am.

Armenians have focused their attention on their narrow national problems and are afraid of raising their problems at a high level, at the State Duma, for example.

Mr Konoplyev, what kind of parliament has been formed as a result of the September 19 parliamentary elections in Russia? Are Armenians represented there?

I have examined the lists of candidates nominated by the participating parties. No Armenian name could be found in the lists of the Homeland party, People’s Freedom Party, Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) or the Communist party. Two Armenian candidates were in the lists of the United Russia party, six candidates in the lists of the ‘A Just Russia’ party, one candidate in the Russian United Democratic Party “Yabloko” lists, two in the Party of Pensioners of Russia lists, and three in the Russian Nationalists party lists.

Four of the parties got into the State Duma: United Russia, Communist party, LDPR led by Vladimir Zhirinovsky, and A Just Russia. The Homeland and the Political Platform parties have one representative each as well. At best, eight Armenians can get into Russia’s State Duma. The exact figure can hardly be cited because the parties have not yet released their lists.

The problem is that Russian Armenians, who have hundreds of organizations are withdrawing from Russia’s domestic politics. They have thus focused their attention on their national problems and are afraid of raising their problems at a high level, at the State Duma, for example.

Russian helicopter on Aleppo aid mission shot down, all 5 aboard dead

August 1, 2016 By administrator

helicopter crachA Russian Mi-8 helicopter has been shot down by ground fire in Syria following delivery of humanitarian supplies to Aleppo, the Defense Ministry said. Three crew and two officers from Russia’s Reconciliation Center died, according to a Kremlin statement.

“On August 1, an Mi-8 transport helicopter has been shot down by ground fire in Idlib province after a delivery of humanitarian aid to the city of Aleppo. Three crew members and two officers from the Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria were on board,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The helicopter was returning to the Russian air base at Khmeimim, the statement added. The ministry has not yet revealed identities of those on board.

The Russian Reconciliation Center in Syria has operated at Khmeimim air base since February. It contributes to peace talks between Syrian government and moderate opposition factions not aligned with IS, Al-Nusra Front or other terrorist groups.

The center also oversees ceasefire agreements between belligerent parties and delivery of humanitarian supplies to various parts of Syria.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed in a statement later in the day that all those on board are dead.

“Those on board the helicopter were killed, as we learned from the Defense Ministry’s report. They died heroically as [the crew] tried to divert the helicopter to minimize casualties on the ground,” Peskov said, adding the Mi-8 had been on a humanitarian mission.

“The Kremlin conveys its deep condolences to the families of those killed in action,” he added.

Shortly after the crash, a number of on-the-spot videos have emerged online, allegedly showing helicopter debris, including a tail rotor and parts of the fuselage. At the moment, RT cannot verify authenticity of those videos.

Last week the Syrian government and Russia launched an effort to evacuate civilians wishing to leave Aleppo, establishing safe corridors and providing food, medical assistance and transport for those who chose to use them. Scores of people, mostly women and children, rushed to abandon the battered city, which has been contested by several armed forces.

The Syrian opposition decried the move, claiming it was an attempt to depopulate the city, a part of which remains one of its strongholds.

The Syrian Army has lost several aircraft over the last two months, indicating that militants may have received new anti-aircraft weapons lately, freelance journalist Alaa Ibrahim told RT.

“I’ve heard some local sources where the [Russian] helicopter was downed speaking of the possibility of MANPADs – shoulder-mounted surface-to-air missiles – being used in that context,” he said.

Portable surface-to-air missiles would be a game changer in the hands of the rebel forces, as they counter the Syrian Army’s air superiority. Providing such weapons would be a risky move for a foreign nation, considering the previous record of unintended weapons transfers.

It is the third Russian helicopter lost in action in Syria this year. In July, an Mi-25 attack chopper was shot down near Palmyra, killing two Russian pilots. The aircraft had been engaging the advancing Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants at the Syrian Army’s request when it was taken down, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

In April, an Mi-28N attack helicopter crashed while performing a flight near the city of Homs, with the Defense Ministry stressing it was not shot down. The crash left both pilots dead, with technical failure cited by Moscow as the likely cause of the accident.

Last October, another Mi-8 helicopter was badly damaged and then destroyed by IS fighters after an emergency landing in the middle of search and rescue operation to extract a surviving co-pilot of a Su-24M bomber jet shot which was down by a Turkish Air Force F-16.

Russian Long-range bombers flying from Russia destroy ‘major’ ISIS camp in central Syria

July 12, 2016 By administrator

long range bomberSix Tupolev Tu-22M3 strategic bombers have delivered massive airstrikes against a major Islamic State camp and ammunition depots in Syria, Russia’s Defense Ministry says. The aircraft flew from Russia and returned home after the operation.

The bombers, based at one of Russian’s southern air bases, took off on Tuesday morning, passed through Iranian and Iraqi airspace and delivered concentrated high-explosive ammunition airstrikes on terrorist targets east of the towns of Palmyra and As Sukhnah, and the village of Arak.

All aircraft have successfully returned to home base, the ministry said in a statement.

The Russian military stated that the information on the eliminated targets was acquired over the last several days and confirmed through several intelligence channels.

The US-led international antiterrorist coalition was notified of the airstrikes in advance, the ministry says.

“The strike resulted in the destruction of a large militant field camp, three depots of arms and munitions, three tanks, four infantry combat vehicles and eight vehicles fitted with heavy machine guns, also neutralizing a large number of enemy fighters,” the statement says.

greece pm russiaGreek PM Alexis Tsipras in an exclusive interview with Sputnik said that European security cannot be achieved without Russia.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Ensuring security in Europe without dialogue and cooperation with Russia is impossible, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras told Sputnik.

“European security cannot be achieved without cooperation and dialogue with Russia,” Tsipras said.

He also said that Europe cannot move forward while caught in a vicious circle of sanctions, militarization and Cold War rhetoric.

“I don’t believe that we can move forward or ensure compliance with international law while caught in a vicious circle of sanctions, militarization and Cold War rhetoric,” Tsipras said.

Moreover, the Greek Prime Minister called on the EU to resume talks on easing the EU visa regime for Russian nationals.

“We overcame all the difficulties that arose due to changes in the issuance of Schengen visas, strengthened the work of our consulates in Russia by attracting dozens of new employees, and we are ready to meet the high demand of Russian nationals for travel to Greece. At the same time, I find it necessary, as I have already mentioned at a European level, that dialogue is relaunched on easing the visa regime for Russian citizens,” Tsipras said.

Turkey: Alleged Turkish killer of Russian jet pilot detained on fraud charges

April 1, 2016 By administrator

Turkish killer russian jestİZMİR – Doğan News Agency,

Alparslan Çelik, who Russia has alleged killed Oleg Peshkov, the pilot of the Russian jet downed by Turkey on Nov. 24, 2015, was detained in the Aegean province of İzmir on fraud charges, according to police sources.

Çelik was held in İzmir on March 30, while he was having dinner with his friends whom he fought beside in Syria along with Turkmens against the Syrian army at a restaurant.

According to the sources, Çelik was sought by the police for fraud and counterfeit money charges.

Arrest warrants were issued for Çelik for convict and prisoner escape in Elazığ on 2014, for fraud in Ankara in 2015 and two counterfeit money crimes in Muğla. Four arrest warrants were issued for threatening, fraud and breach of faith for Çelik, who has a prison sentence for 2.5 years, the İzmir Police Department head said.

The warrants on fraud charges were about Çelik allegedly collecting aid money to send to Turkmen Mountain.

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on Çelik’s detention, saying that Russia wants more information about the case. Speaking to the journalists, Peskov said Russian officials don’t know the reason why Çelik was detained.

“We need more information about what he is charged with, what he will be charged with and how the murder will be handled by Turkish prosecutors. We still don’t know [this information],” Peskov said. “The court can decide whether he is guilty or not. In this case, this person confessed to his crime, I can’t draw conclusions about the other issues. It would be wrong.”

Çelik and 13 others were detained after an unidentified person called the police and said there were men with guns in the restaurant.

Police seized a Kalashnikov, an assault rifle, two walkie-talkies, six pistols and approximately 150 bullets from the men, after which Çelik and his friends were taken to a police station to give their testimonies.
