Serbia parliament rejects opposition proposal to recognize Armenian Genocide

March 8, 2018 By administrator

The Serbian parliament has rejected the opposition’s proposal to recognize Armenian Genocide.

Even though such motions have been submitted several times in the Serbian legislature over the past decade, they have always been rejected, according to RFE/RL Balkan Service.

This time a resolution recognizing the genocide of 1.5 million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire was submitted by Serbia’s former Prime Minister Zoran Živković, who now heads the opposition New Party.

Speaking to the RFE/RL Serbian Service, Živković underscored the need for Belgrade to clarify its position on this matter, and he recalled that both Russia and most of the US states have recognized this greatest tragedy of the 20th century.

According to various estimates, solely up to 300 Armenians live in Serbia which has a population of about 7 million, and which also was part of the Ottoman Empire at the turn of the last century.

Interpol rejects Azerbaijani request for arrest warrant against MEP

July 13, 2017 By administrator

European Parliament for visiting Nagorno Karabakh, Radio Prague reports.International police cooperation agency Interpol has rejected a request by Azerbaijan for an international arrest warrant to be served on a Czech Member of the European Parliament for visiting Nagorno Karabakh, Radio Prague reports.

Interpol refused to arrest of MEP Jaromír Štětina following a request from authorities in Azerbaijan.

The move followed a visit by the MEP to Karabakh in February during which Štětina denounced moves by authorities in Azerbaijan.

They said his comments helped fuel tension in the region.

The Czech said the demand for an arrest warrant was aimed at scaring off international experts and commentators against speaking out against the Baku government.

Previously, a Russian-Israeli blogger was arrested in Belarus on Baku’s request. Alexander Lapshin, who divided his time in several countries, was arrested for visiting Karabakh and condemning the Azerbaijani authorities.

Iraqi government rejects Kurdish move for independence

Iraqi government rejects Kurdish move for independence

Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi said in April he respected the Kurdish right to vote on independence, but didn’t think the timing was right [Reuters]

Baghdad government says unilateral moves for independence unconstitutional two days after Kurds announce referendum.

The Iraqi government has said it would reject any unilateral move by Kurdish regional authorities to press for independence, according to a spokesman in the capital, Baghdad.

The statement on Friday comes two days after Masoud Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), announced that a referendum on Kurdish independence would be held on September 25.

“No party can, on its own, decide the fate of Iraq, in isolation from the other parties,” Saad al-Haddithi, Iraqi government spokesman, said in a statement.

“Iraq is constitutionally a democratic, federal country with full sovereignty … Any measure from any side in Iraq should be based on the constitution,” Haddithi said.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had said in April that he respected the Kurdish right to vote on independence, but he did not think the timing was right for the move.

The referendum on whether to secede from Iraq is planned to be held in the three governorates that make up the Kurdish region, and in the areas that are disputed by the Kurdish and Iraqi governments but are currently under Kurdish military control.

The disputed areas include swaths of northern territory that are claimed by both Kurdish Iraq and Baghdad, including the key oil-rich province of Kirkuk.

‘Terrible mistake’

Opposition in Baghdad to Kurdish Iraq becoming independent would become even greater if the region tried to take disputed territory along with it.

Turkey also came out against the referendum on Friday, calling the plan a “terrible mistake”.

“The maintenance of Iraq’s territorial integrity and political unit is one of the fundamental principles of Turkey’s Iraq policy,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

States that neighbour Iraq, including Turkey, as well as Syria and Iran, and which all have large and sometimes restive Kurdish populations, have in the past resisted moves towards Kurdish independence.

Chilean parliament rejects pro-Azerbaijani resolution

June 23, 2016 By administrator

chilean reject azeriThe Chamber of Deputies of Chile rejected a project promoted by Azerbaijani diplomacy to declare its total repudiation of the “Khojaly genocide” and express their firm condemnation of the “military occupation of the territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan,” Prensa Armenia reports.

The rejection came after the same Chamber unanimously passed a historic resolution that condemns the “armed attack of Azerbaijan against the Nagorno Karabakh Republic” on May 18.

The rejected project sought to be a diplomatic response to the political setback that suffered the government of Azerbaijan in May. The resolution even called to nullify “any other manifestation of a contrary intention expressed before.”

Armenian Ambassador to Argentina and Chile Alexan Harutyunyan was present during the voting because he traveled to present his credentials to President of Chile Michelle Bachelet. Harutyunyan sent a letter to all the Deputies signed by the Armenian community of Chile, Archbishop Kissag Mouradian, Primate of the Armenian Apostolic Church for Argentina and Chile, and the Ambassador explaining the position of Armenia before the Chamber took the decision.

The project of the Azeri lobby was introduced by Congressmen Gabriel Silber Romo, Roberto Leon Ramirez, Ivan Flores Garcia and Aldo Cornejo Gonzalez of the Christian Democratic Party, Javier Hernandez Hernandez, Romilio Gutierrez Pino and Osvaldo Urrutia Soto of the Independent Democratic Union, Marcos Espinosa Monardes of the Radical Social Democratic Party, Lautaro Carmona Soto of the Communist Party and Daniel Farcas Guendelman of the Party for Democracy. Many of those who introduced the project voted against it after receiving the letter of the Armenian community in their country.

Argentina football club rejects Terrorist State of Turkish Airlines sponsorship

December 16, 2015 By administrator

202431The president of the Argentinean football club Racing Victor Blanco confirmed on Tuesday, December 15 that they rejected the sponsorship of Turkish Airlines, Agencia Prensa Armenia reports.

The move was welcomed by the Armenian community of Argentina. In a statement titled “Turkish Airlines tried to sponsor Racing to wash the image of the authoritarian government off Turkey,” Armenian Youth Federation of South America organization hailed the decision. “For several years, Turkish Airlines became the main weapon of Turkish diplomacy around the world sponsoring important sports figures like Kobe Bryant or Lionel Messi. They exhibited their brand with recognized and admired figures to hide the reality the Turkish people currently live in,” said the Armenian youth organization.

“The persecution of the Kurdish people and the People’s Democratic Party, which last November reached a new peak with the murder of human rights lawyer Tahir Elçi, the harassment of opposition media that intensifies during elections in the country, the repression of peaceful demonstrations of the civil society, the imprisonment of opponents or simply those who “insult” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the harassment of those who challenge the official story about the Armenian Genocide, the censorship and blocking of Twitter and other social networks and the complicity with the Islamic State to intensify the conflict in Syria, are some of the many reasons that the Turkish diplomacy has to hide their true intentions,” added the Armenian Youth Federation of South America.

“In football, the shirt and the colors are immaculate,” said Alfonso Tabakian, director of the Armenian National Committee of South America. “They are the identity of supporters of a club. Therefore, no fan would like their club to be sponsored by a government that violates human rights.”

Last year, another Argentinean club San Lorenzo de Almagro rejected a millions’ worth sponsorship offer from Azerbaijan. Racing and San Lorenzo are two of the biggest clubs in the country.

URGENT: Iran Rejects Russian Missile Crash describing as “psychological war”

October 8, 2015 By administrator

13940716000359_PhotoITEHRAN (FNA)– The Iranian defense ministry rejected reports alleging that four of the 26 cruise missiles fired from Russia’s Caspian fleet at ISIL targets in Syria have crash-landed in Iran, saying the reports are part of the West’s “psychological warfare”.

A source at the Iranian Defense Ministry told Sputnik that it has not received any report indicating the crash of the Russian missiles on Iranian territories, describing the allegations as “psychological war”.

Russia’s Defense Ministry also denied the US media reports of the alleged incident, stating that all missiles hit their designated targets.

“No matter how unpleasant and unexpected for our colleagues in the Pentagon and Langley was yesterday’s high-precision strike on Islamic State (of Iraq and the Levant) infrastructure in Syria, the fact remains that all missiles launched from our ships have found their targets,” ministry’s spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said.

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu announced on Wednesday that four Russian Navy warships had fired a total of 26 missiles at the positions of the ISIL terrorist group in Syria.

Earlier today, FNA released an amateur video showing the missiles fired from the Russian Navy warships in the Caspian Sea travelled through the sky of Iraq’s Kurdistan region before hitting their targets in Syria.

Earlier today, the CNN claimed that according to Pentagon officials, at least, four of the Russian cruise missiles have crash-landed in Iran.

The CNN report came after the Russian army announced that all the 26 missiles hit and completely destroyed their targets in the Syrian provinces of Raqqa, Idlib and Aleppo.

The missile attacks came from Russia’s fleet in the Caspian Sea, which borders Russia, Iran and three other littoral countries. The precision weapons reportedly hit all intended targets. The attacks apparently required cooperation from Iran and Iraq, as the missiles had to travel through their airspace to reach Syria.

The Russian Defense Ministry said it had worked with its partners to plan the flight path so that the missiles traveled only over desolate areas and didn’t pose any danger to civilians.

The missiles flew some 1,500 km before reaching their targets, proving their efficiency.

Four warships of the Caspian fleet were involved in the missile attacks, the Gepard-class frigate Dagestan and the Buyan-M-class corvettes Grad Sviyazhsk, Uglich and Veliky Ustyug. They fired cruise missiles from the Kalibr NK (Klub) VLS launchers. The missiles used are capable of hitting a target within 3 meters at a range of up to 2,500 km.

Yerevan, Prime Minister Rejects Reversal on Energy Hike, As Russia Urges ‘Compromise’

Protesters on Baghramyan Avenue continue their demands into the fourth day (Photolure)

Protesters on Baghramyan Avenue continue their demands into the fourth day (Photolure)

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)—Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian on Thursday defended state regulators’ decision to raise electricity prices and urged thousands of protesters to unblock a major street in Yerevan on the fourth day of their nonstop demonstrations against the controversial measure.

Abrahamian also announced that the Armenian government will compensate some 105,000 low-income families for the more than 16 percent tariff increases authorized by the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) last week. Monthly poverty benefits paid to them will be raised by 2,000 drams ($4.2), he said.

The Armenian Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs estimates that the tariff hike will cost the average family living below the official poverty line only 1,400 drams in additional monthly expenditures.

“I would like to appeal to our activists, organizers of those rallies and say that such actions will lead nowhere,” Abrahamian said at the weekly meeting of his cabinet. “I am calling on them to be more constructive. The government is ready to discuss any issue that is being raised by them.”

Abrahamian insisted that the price hike reflects “objective realities” of the Armenian energy sector. He echoed the PSRC’s arguments that the Electricity Networks of Armenia (ENA) utility needs to be compensated for last year’s depreciation of the Armenian dram, a longer-than-anticipated stoppage of the Metsamor nuclear plant’s reactor and decreased water levels on rivers fueling hydroelectric stations.

The ENA has had to buy larger volumes of much more expensive electricity generated at Armenian thermal power plants. The company owned by a Russian energy giant currently has over $225 million in outstanding debts to power plants and banks.

Critics say, however, that the ENA’s losses are the result of corruption and mismanagement. They also point to the company’s extravagant expenses, including on luxury cars and office space for its senior executives, which have been disclosed by the Armenian media in recent months.

Abrahamian sought to dispel these claims accepted by many Armenians. “I don’t exclude that there have been abuses [within the ENA,]” he said. “But I want to declare with utmost responsibility that regardless of the scale of possible abuses inside the company, not a single penny of them was calculated into the tariff.”

“Such abuses stemming from poor management have hurt the company’s owner, rather than consumers, seeing as its profits have decreased,” added the premier.

Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian

Abrahamian went on to assert that failure to raise the tariffs would disrupt electricity supplies in Armenia and lead to the kind of crippling power shortages which the country had endured in the early 1990s.

No To Plunder, a pressure group leading the protests, was quick to dismiss these statements. One of its leaders, Vaghinak Shushanian, said the protesters will not leave Marshal Baghramyan Avenue until the authorities meet their demands.

“If he has so much courage, he should come here and talk to us,” Shushanian told RFE/RL’ Armenian service (Azatutyun.am). “Let him appear before the people here and say from the podium that … this measure is justified.”

Like senior law-enforcement officials, Abrahamian said that the nonstop protests on the avenue leading to the presidential palace are illegal. But he stopped short of threatening to forcibly disperse the mostly young people demonstrating there.

The chief of the Armenian police, Vladimir Gasparian, also did not voice such threats when he visited the scene and talked to some protesters early in the morning.“Stay peaceful and don’t provoke us,” he said.

Gasparian further said that law-enforcement authorities are investigating violence against more than a dozen journalists, including three RFE/RL correspondents, perpetrated by his officers during Tuesday’s violent crackdown on the Bagramian Avenue protesters. “Who said that we can’t have shortcomings and make mistakes?” he told reporters. “The key thing is to identify and address them.”

Gasparian was accompanied by Levon Yeranosian, one of his deputies who the journalists say personally ordered the violence.

Russia Urges ‘Compromise Solution’ To Armenian Standoff
Russia has called on the Armenian authorities to make concessions to thousands of people holding nonstop demonstrations in Yerevan against the latest increase in electricity prices in Armenia.

Significantly, a senior Russian official also disputed claims by some Russian pro-government politicians and pundits that Western powers are behind the continuing standoff between Armenian protesters and riot police.

“We count on the common sense and wisdom of the Armenian leadership,” Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin said late on Wednesday, according to the RIA Novosti agency. “According to our information, one can expect that a compromise decision on issues raised by the demonstrators will be found.”

“We are awaiting news from Yerevan,” added Karasin. He did not specify whether the Russian government is ready to assist in such a settlement.

Karasin cast doubt on the credibility of these claims, saying that they “need to be proved.” “We will be carefully looking into everything that preceded [the Yerevan protests,] but I wouldn’t jump into such hasty conclusions,” he said.

A spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Moscow is “very closely” monitoring the dramatic developments in Armenia and hopes that there will be no “violations of the law.”

Texas Rejects Pro-Azerbaijani Resolution

May 8, 2015 By administrator

15591_10153247767856147_3497582115694637287_nAUSTIN–Texas State Representative Dwayne Bohab on Thursday pulled from consideration a misleading resolution (HR2309) “Commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the Black January events in Azerbaijan” he introduced late April filled with factually inaccurate historical information with respect to the events that led to the country’s independence as well as its policies regarding people’s right to self-determination and independence, reported the Armenian National Committee of America – Western Region.

“The power of our grassroots’ in Texas against the persistent, yet failed, efforts backed by the Azerbaijani lobby to shamefully introduce legislation that blatantly misrepresents facts is a real testament to our community’s and organization’s resolve to pursue truth and justice for our Cause,” remarked ANCA-WR Executive Director Elen Asatryan. “We were particularly pleased to see Representative Bohac’s quick response and reconsideration to ultimately withdraw the resolution after gaining better understanding of the facts about Azerbaijan and the region,” added Asatryan.

Jeff Stokes, Legislative Director for State Representative Dwayne Bohac informed Asbarez that Bohac’s office had received numerous requests from constituents to introduce a measure such as HR2309.

“When we realized it was a mistake, we placed it on permanent hold,” said Stokes, who explained that per Texas law once a hold is placed on a piece of legislation, no further action is taken on the matter.

The decision to place a permanent hold on HR2309 came just 16 hours after ANCA WR worked with local community leaders and activists to alert Bohac about the facts surrounding the events that led to Azerbaijan’s independence, the corrupt and authoritarian regime of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and the country’s gross human rights violations, coverage of which has increased in the American press most recently in the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, under the headlines, “A Thuggish Regime Challenges the U.S.” and “The Two Faces of Azerbaijan’s Mr. Aliyev” respectively.

More specifically, late Monday evening ANCA WR Executive Director Elen Asatryan submitted a written statement to Bohac opposing the resolution on behalf of the regional, Dallas and Houston chapters noting, “The resolution gives the impression that Azerbaijan was invaded in retaliation for its independence movement. However, the truth is that troops were sent to Azerbaijan in order to protect the nearly half million Christian Armenians who were being subjected to violent pogroms and massacres throughout the nation in a campaign of ethnic cleansing. Azerbaijan’s hostility was its response to the calls for independence by the Nagorno Karabakh Republic (NKR), which was an autonomous region at the time, thereby demonstrating its repressive policies, which are contrary to the claims made in the language of the resolution.”

Asatryan continued on to state, ”Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has the dubious honor of being selected as the most corrupt person by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). The NGO’s finding is based on extensive reports and well-documented evidence that the Aliyev family has been systematically grabbing shares of the most profitable businesses in Azerbaijan for many years. Earlier this week, the Committee to Protect Journalists concluded that Azerbaijan is the fifth most censored and repressive country in the world, out of nearly 200 countries in the world. In its report the CPJ concluded that the ‘main sources of information in Azerbaijan are broadcasters which are owned and controlled by the state or its proxies.’ The report also noted that independent media outlets are subjected to harassment and prosecution by officials, and that at least ten journalists and bloggers are currently in Azerbaijani jails on fabricated charges.”

“This being a top priority, our local chapter and I specifically reached out to Representative Dwayne Bohac’s office yesterday to convey our disappointment and opposition to the resolution. Today when I called back to see if we made any headway, I was pleased to hear that the office had already pulled the resolution. This truly shows that each and every one of us can truly make a difference by just making our voice heard,” stated ANCA Dallas Chair Lucia Nazarian. ”Thank you to the Dallas community members for your efforts in shedding light and bringing the truth to the forefront of our Texas legislators,” added Nazarian.

“I am pleased to see that the anti-Armenian resolution was withdrawn and appreciate the diligence of the Houston Armenian community and proud of their dedication for the Armenian Cause, “ remarked ANCA Houston Chair Vrouir Frankian.
