Iraqi special forces liberate Mosul University from Islamic State

January 13, 2017 By administrator

MOSUL,— Iraqi special forces stormed the Mosul University complex in the city’s northeast on Friday and pushed Islamic State further back to reach another bridge across the Tigris river, the military said.

The militants were fighting back at the university, which they had seized when they took over the city in 2014. A Reuters reporter witnessed heavy clashes inside the campus.

Iraqi forces have recaptured most districts in eastern Mosul in nearly three months of a U.S.-backed offensive, which accelerated at the turn of the year with new tactics and better coordination.

They aim to take full control of the eastern bank of the Tigris river, which bisects Mosul from north to south, before launching attacks on the west, still fully in Islamic State hands.

Driving the ultra-hardline Islamist group out of its Mosul stronghold will probably spell the end for the Iraqi side of the caliphate it has declared, stretching into Syria.

Senior Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) commander Sami al-Aridhi said the university was the most important Islamic State base in the eastern half of the city.

BULLDOZERS

He said the CTS had taken over a hill overlooking parts of the campus, including the technical college. “Forces are heading into the depths of the university,” he said.

Earlier, bulldozers had smashed through a wall surrounding the campus and dozens of CTS troops sprinted through carrying rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

An Iraqi officer said army units backed by air strikes had also taken control of Hadba district, north of the university, and would aid the assault on the complex.

Another CTS commander said the capture of the university would enable further advances as it overlooks areas closer to the river.

Advances by Iraqi forces have gathered pace in the last two weeks after troops got bogged down in fierce street fighting in late November and December and militants hid among the civilian population.

New tactics employed since the turn of the year, including a night raid and better defences against suicide car bombs, have given the campaign fresh momentum, U.S. and Iraqi military officials say.

Better coordination between different military divisions, such as the elite CTS and the regular army, has also helped, a senior Western diplomat told Reuters this week.

FIVE BRIDGES

“As (Islamic State) are pulled away to fight CTS, that’s the opportunity for the Iraqi army to attack against a much weaker defence,” the diplomat said.

Securing areas along the Tigris would be crucial, the diplomat added.

“Once you get to the river, you can then slowly mop it up, because you can then cut the lines of communication.”

CTS spokesman Sabah al-Numan told state television: “God willing, within a short period the complete clearing of the left bank of the Tigris will be announced.”

In a separate advance further south in the city, other elite CTS units reached the Second Bridge, also called Freedom Bridge, one of five across the Tigris, the military said in a statement reported by state TV.

Iraqi forces have now reached Mosul’s two southernmost bridges, having battled their way to the Fourth Bridge several days ago.

Assaults on the western half of Mosul are expected to begin once Iraqi forces have secured the east bank.

All the bridges have been hit by U.S. coalition air strikes in an effort to hamper Islamic State’s movements. U.S. and Iraqi military officials say Islamic State has further damaged at least two of them to try to hamper an army advance.

Aleppo Liberated, Turkey’s Terrorism Defeated Joyful Syrians gather for Christmas ceremonies

December 21, 2016 By administrator

Hundreds of people have gathered in the western quarter of Aleppo to light up a sparkling and gigantic Christmas tree as they begin to get back to normal life in the embattled city, which has recently been liberated from the grip of Takfiri militants.

On Tuesday evening, people converged on al-Azizieh Square in western Aleppo to count down as the Christmas tree lights were being turned on.

The participants waved Syrian and Russian flags as well as that of the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement, while a band in in Santa Claus suits played brass instruments to evoke an exultant mood.

Following weeks-long counterterrorism operations, the Syrian army, backed by Russian air power, managed earlier this month to retake the eastern parts of Aleppo, which had fallen to militants back in 2012.

A mission is currently underway to evacuate the remaining civilians and armed men from Aleppo’s formerly militant-held areas. The evacuations are part a ceasefire deal brokered by Russia and Turkey.

The celebration in Aleppo comes amid ongoing army operations against the terrorists on the outskirts of the city and elsewhere in the country.

Earlier in the day, Syrian fighter jets pounded militant positions in the city of Anadan, situated 12 kilometers north of Aleppo, as well as Hayyan town. Scores of foreign-backed Takfiri militants were killed in the aerial attacks.

Separately, Syrian forces targeted four pick-up trucks equipped with heavy machineguns in the Rasm al-Harmel district of Deir Hafer town, which lies near the Air Force Academy in southeastern Aleppo, destroying the vehicles and leaving a number of militants onboard dead.

Elsewhere in the central province of Homs, Syrian army soldiers struck terrorists’ hideouts in the town of al-Ghantoo, located 12 kilometers north of Homs, plus Deir Ful and al-Wa’ra villages.

Syria’s privately-owned and Arabic-language Sama television network also reported that more than 70 civilians had left the besieged towns of al-Foua and Kefraya in the northwestern province of Idlib, and arrived in the western port city of Latakia.

The evacuation process in the two villages is also part of the Aleppo truce deal.

Iraqi forces say Fallujah ‘fully liberated’

General al-Saadi (center) is in charge of anti-terror forces

Iraqi troops have cleared out the last pocket of “Islamic State” (IS) resistance and ended the battle in Fallujah, a general said. The news comes over a week after Baghdad declared victory in the war-ravaged city.

The IS militants were routed from Fallujah’s northwestern al-Julan district, marking the end of the month-long battle for the city, Lieutenant General Abdul-Wahad al-Saadi said on Sunday.

The area had been “cleared by the counterterrorism service,” according to al-Saadi.

“From the center of al-Julan neighborhood, we congratulate the Iraqi people and the commander in chief… and declare that the Fallujah fight is over,” Wahad told state TV.

At least 1,800 insurgents were killed in the battle for the western city, he added.

The troops are now set to start removing bombs from the streets and buildings.

Never-ending war

The ancient city, some 50 kilometers (31 miles) west of the capital, Baghdad, was the first to fall to the IS insurgency in early 2014. It has been under the jihadist group’s control ever since.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over the IS forces last week, when Iraqi troops raised their flag above the government complex in the center of the city.

On Tuesday, however, the US-led coalition said that only one -hird of the city could be described as “cleared,” as fighting still continued in several city areas.

The city was only “fully liberated” on Sunday, according to al-Saadi.

The IS still controls large swaths of Iraq, including the country’s second-largest city of Mosul.

Fallujah also saw fierce fighting between US troops and al Qaeda militants in 2004.

The village of Mheen was seized by Islamic State militants on November 1. The attack on the settlement, populated mostly by Christians, was supported by Islamic radicals from the region. Christians from the neighboring village of Sadad fled, fearing for their lives.

At the moment, the ISIL militants still maintain their hold over the settlement of Al Quaryatayn.

October 22, 2015 By administrator

199332Syrian troops backed by Russian air strikes have advanced in Aleppo, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Armenia’s Social Democrat Hunchakian Party told reporters Thursday, October 22, Tert.am reports.

“80% of Aleppo is near liberated, with the remaining part to be hopefully freed soon,” Vazgen Mesropyan said.

According to him, the U.S. and European airstrikes were unsuccessful.

“Unable to fight the 1500-member terrorist front, the Syrian army turned to Russia for help. We think Aleppo will thoroughly be liberated in 4-6 months,” Mesropyan noted.

He also said some 7000-8000 Armenian currently live in Aleppo against the over 40.000 Armenians that resided there before the war.

According to him, only some 1000 out of some 10.000 Syrian Armenians have jobs in Armenia.

More than 100 Armenians have been killed in the course of the four-year civil war in Syria, he said, with many more wounded.

fc47a5c1-5c18-484a-b7a2-fffa5dd728b0Kurdish Peshmerga fighters have managed to retake seven villages in the northern part of Iraq from Takfiri Daesh militants as they continue to push the terrorists back from the area.

Idris Sheikh Adel, the chairman of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) political party in Kirkuk Province, told Arabic-language al-Sumaria satellite television network on Friday that Peshmerga fighters liberated the villages of Albu Mohammad, located some 30 kilometers (18 miles) south of the provincial capital city of Kirkuk, Minor Tal Rabiah, Major Tal Rabiah, Sheikh Saleh, situated 45 kilometers (27 miles) south of Kirkuk, Zaklawa, Samoud and 7 Nisan (April 7) following fierce skirmishes with Daesh extremists.
Separately, seven members of the Iraqi Kurdish Peshmerga forces lost their lives when bombs struck them as they were securing the road linking Baghdad to Kirkuk as well as the center of Daquq town, located approximately 180 kilometers (111 miles) north of  Baghdad.

Brigadier General Mohammed Mustafa Hama, a Peshmerga commander, said 16 Kurdish fighters were also wounded in the act of violence.

Meanwhile, at least 20 Daesh Takfiri have been injured when Iraqi security forces fired a barrage of rockets at terrorist hideouts in the districts of Tal Masoud and al-Maziq, located nine kilometers (5.5 miles) east of Anbar’s provincial capital city of Ramadi.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by gruesome violence ever since Daesh Takfiri terrorists mounted an offensive in June 2014. The militants have been committing vicious crimes against all ethnic and religious communities in Iraq, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians and others.

The Iraqi army together with fighters from the Popular Mobilization Units has been engaged in operations to liberate militant-held regions.

Syria Kurds liberate 14 Assyrian Christian villages

Kurdish forces in Syria have managed to take control of 14 Assyrian Christian villages that had been held by the Takfiri ISIL terrorists since February.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Wednesday that the Kurdish fighters engaged the terrorists in a ten-day operation to liberate the villages.

The terrorists in February attacked a number of Assyrian Christian villages along the Khabur River in the northeastern province of Hasakah. They also kidnapped hundreds of Assyrians. Reports say 210 hostages are still held by the terror group.

The ISIL raid forced thousands of Christians from their homes.

ISIL, abductions and ransom

Meanwhile, Osama Edward, the head of the Sweden-based Assyrian Network for Human Rights, said photos from the region showed a massive destruction of houses and churches in the liberated villages.

“Most people are afraid to return because they fear that ISIL booby-trapped their houses before fleeing,” he said.

In May, the Assyrian network said ISIL had demanded USD 22 million in ransom for the release of over 200 Assyrians abducted in Hasakah.

Assyrians account for about 2.5 percent of Syria’s 1.2 million Christians. They come from one of the oldest Christian communities in the world. Assyrians inhabit 35 villages in Hasakah, all of which are now under the control of the Kurdish fighters or Syria’s government forces.

No boundaries to ISIL atrocities

The Takfiri ISIL terrorists, with recruits from several Western countries, control parts of Syria and Iraq.

They have been engaged in horrific acts of violence against all ethnic and religious communities, ranging from public decapitations to crucifixions.
