Turkey 500 soldiers died suspiciously in four years

January 11, 2018 By administrator

Suspicious Deaths and Victims Association Chairperson Oktay Can said that 500 soldiers have lost their lives under suspicious circumstances in the last four years.

The Suspicious Deaths and Victims Association had recently announced that 2.500 soldiers have lost their lives in the last 22 years. The provinces with State of Emergency practices are in the lead in suspicious soldier deaths.

The organization’s chairperson Oktay Can said they founded the Suspicious Deaths and Victims Association in 2013 and that 500 families have appealed to them to date claiming their children had died under suspicious circumstances and added that the suspicious soldier deaths have increased with the reimplementation of the State of Emergency.

“NOBODY ELSE KNOWS THE PAIN OF LOSING A CHILD”

Can said he personally lost his son in 2009 in the Hozat Sarıkaş Outpost in Dersim and stated that he experienced the deep pain of losing a child and they founded the association so other families never do and suspicious deaths are prevented. Can pointed out that lawsuits about soldiers who lost their lives under suspicious circumstances have never been concluded to date and have been stuck on the statute of limitations: “My son lost his life when his commander shot 2 bullets to his head. There were bruises on my son’s neck due to battery. I received the autopsy report, it stated how he died, but when we wanted to investigate the matter we were told the military prosecutor’s office would issue a statement. There are many soldier deaths by the hands of commanders like my son’s. To date, some 2.300 families have been subjected to such approaches. The cases weren’t resolved through lawsuits. I am following up on my own son’s file. Most recently I took my son’s case to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). And as an association we are working for other families’ children as well.”

“IF COMMANDERS DON’T SHOOT SOLDIERS, WHAT HAPPENED ON JULY 15?”

Can said they took the deaths to the Grand Parliamentary Assembly of Turkey, but couldn’t convince anybody there that the deaths were in fact suspicious: “Nobody we talked to in the Parliament believed us. I spoke to the President about this as well, but he told me commanders don’t shoot soldiers. We saw in the July 15 coup attempt that soldiers can in fact turn their guns towards the people, to their own, and they attacked people with tanks. In any case, we have so much evidence, but we can’t explain ourselves to the prosecutors. Because military prosecutors receive orders in doing their duty, and thus our initiatives fall short. The prosecutors decide against investigating ‘suspicious deaths’. So we speak to others about our issues. People who appeal to us say their sons were killed by their commanders.”

“IT’S USUALLY KURDISH AND ALEVI SOLDIERS WHO DIE”

Can said the suspicious soldier deaths occur most frequently in Kurdish provinces and contiued: “Many people suffer torture during their military service, and many are killed arbitrarily. There is a lot of evidence to document this, but as the military courts are not completely just, our cases don’t produce results. Most of the deaths occur in Eastern and Southeastern parts. And most soldiers who die there turn out to be Kurdish or Alevi.”

“500 SOLDIERS KILLED UNDER SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES IN 4 YEARS”

Can stated that they have received appeals from many provinces since the association was founded and added: “To date, some 500 families have appealed to us. Their children also received violent abuse from their commanders. 80% of the families are Kurdish. They are pressured and intimidated by the commanders to not file charges. There are many families we can’t reach because of this intimidation. We demanded that a parliamentary commission be formed to investigate the matter and hear the families. Among our demands is that our children are insured by the state, that our children are not killed by their commanders. There are some soldiers who were married, and because the state doesn’t offer any form of aid after they are killed, there are children of these soldiers who have to pick bread out of the trash to eat.”

“NO MANDATORY MILITARY SERVICE”

Can spoke of the necessity to remove mandatory military service and said: “When we look at the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF), soldiers suffer either food poisoning, or they are tortured, or they are killed. That is why we demand an end to mandatory military service. Even if they don’t fully remove the mandatory military service, they should introduce a civil service in any state institution as the duty to the country.” Can concluded his words with a demand to try and punish the killers of soldiers.

Breaking News: Jalal Talabani, former Iraqi president and PUK leader, has died

October 3, 2017 By administrator

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Former Iraqi president and leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Jalal Talabani has passed away in hospital in Berlin, Germany, aged 83.

While remaining nominally head of the PUK, Talabani withdrew from public life after suffering a stroke in December 2012. He was in Germany seeking health care and had reportedly slipped into a coma earlier in the day. According to the PUK, his condition rapidly deteriorated on Tuesday.

Known affectionately by Kurds as Mam Jalal, meaning uncle, Jalal Hisamadin Talabani was born on November 12, 1933 in the village of Kalkan near Mount Kosrat.

He graduated with a law degree from Baghdad University in 1959.

Political from an early age, he joined the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in 1947, at age 14. Throughout his life he has been a journalist, Peshmerga, and politician. The PUK said he was “often seen as a unifying elder statesman who could soothe tempers among Iraq’s Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds.”

Talabani played a major role in Kurdistan’s September 1961 uprising, the Aylul Revolution, serving on the Kirkuk and Sulaimani fronts.

In 1975, he left the KDP and established the PUK under the motto: peace, democracy, human rights and self-determination.

As head of the PUK, he continued to play a leading role in the Kurdish struggle, attempting negotiations with Saddam Hussein and establishing the Kurdistan Front with Idris Barzani.

After the collapse of the Baathist regime in 2003, Talabani became a member of the Iraqi Governing Council and was instrumental in drafting the Iraqi constitution.

In April 2005, he was elected president of Iraq by the transitional national assembly, becoming the first non-Arab president of Iraq. He won a second term as president the following year and again in 2010. By agreement of all parties in Baghdad, the position of president of Iraq is allocated to a Kurd.

He suffered a stroke on December 17, 2012 in Baghdad and spent a year and a half in Germany receiving medical treatment. He returned to Sulaimani on July 19, 2014.

Fuad Masum was elected president of Iraq on July 24, 2014, succeeding Talabani.

At a rally in Sulaimani, heartland of the PUK, before Kurdistan’s independence referendum, Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani said the mission to achieve the nation’s long-held quest for independence would have been easier if Talabani was in better health.

“My dear brother President Mam Jalal, I will never forget your brotherhood,” said Barzani.

Talabani was married to Hero Ibrahim Ahmed. The couple has two sons: Qubad and Bafel. Qubad Talabani is deputy prime minister of the Kurdistan Region.

One of world’s last survivors of Armenian Genocide dies at 102

August 11, 2016 By administrator

genocide-survivor-diesRamela Carman, a longtime Oakland County resident and one of the world’s last survivors of the Armenian Genocide, has died at age 102,

Mrs. Carman was a treasured family member and devoted worshipper at St. John for many years, said Jeff Axt of Bloomfield Township, a cousin and Parish Council chairman.

“On top of that, she was a symbol of what the Armenian people have endured,” he said.

She was born April 7, 1914 in Yozgat, Turkey, and died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016, with her family by her side.

Mrs. Carman, a former Pontiac resident, was believed to be one of only about 30 survivors worldwide of the event that resulted in the deaths of as many as 2 million people. She was the last remaining genocide survivor in Michigan.

As her family gathered to celebrate her 102nd birthday last April, Mrs. Carman reflected on stories that relatives told her about the genocide. She was too young to have horrific memories of it, but relatives told her that her father was one of the people whom the government forced to march off one day.

“He turned back,” she said, explaining that he wore disguises, changed his name, went into hiding — did whatever was necessary to stay alive. He later reunited with his family but died of kidney disease after just a short time.

Mrs. Carman recalled that even after the genocide “ended” in 1918, there was often different treatment for Armenians, who couldn’t ever predict how they would be received.

With her mother and grandmother, Mrs. Carman relocated from their small village to Istanbul. Her mother worked in a factory and her grandmother worked as a cook. By the time she was 16, both her mother and grandmother became too ill to work and she took responsibility for supporting them.

She worked in a factory and later bought a sewing machine and assembled men’s shirts.

In 1960, she came to the United States, marrying Masa Carman a few months after arriving. She taught herself English and was later hired by Hagopian to repair their Oriental rugs. Later, in retirement, she and her husband enjoyed traveling together.

After her husband died in 1995, she traveled to France and Turkey to visit relatives. She visited Turkey again in 2001.

Axt said she fell and broke her hip about six weeks ago, leading to a series of related health problems.

British MP Jo Cox has died after brutal stabbing & shooting attack – police

June 16, 2016 By administrator

cox shotLabour MP Jo Cox has been confirmed dead hours after being shot outside her advice surgery near the city of Leeds. Both sides in Britain’s EU referendum debate have suspended campaigning following the attack.

Dee Collins, Deputy Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police announced Cox’s death in a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

The 41-year-old was shot close to her constituency advice surgery in Birstall, near Leeds in northern England, earlier in the day.

DCC Collins said the the mother-of-two was reportedly shot in the face three times and attacked with a knife, adding that a full investigation was underway to establish a motive for the murder.

The UK’s Press Association news agency cited eyewitnesses who said the MP for the constituency of Batley and Spen appeared to be involved in a struggle in the street with a man, who pulled out a gun. Cox was left bleeding on the pavement and another man was also injured.

Police later said they believe the attack was a localized incident and they were not looking for anyone else than the 51-year-old man arrested earlier in the day, named locally as Tommy Mair.

In a statement on its website later, Britain First said the media was “desperately trying to incriminate” the party in the attack, adding that it was “NOT involved and would never encourage behaviour of this sort.” The party said it was praying that Jo Cox would make a full recovery.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn issued a statement saying the whole the party and country “will be in shock” at her “horrific murder.”

Paying tribute to her work, he said she “was dedicated to getting us to live up to our promises to support the developing world and strengthen human rights – and she brought those values and principles with her when she became an MP.”

Cox was elected to Britain’s parliament in 2015 after a career as an aid worker for Oxfam. Part of her constituency – the town of Batley – is among the poorest in the country, part of an EU transformation zone, and has a high immigrant population.

She was critical of Britain’s reluctance to deepen its involvement in the fightback against “Islamic State” militants in Syria. She also campaigned for the UK to remain in the EU.

Following the attack, both the pro and anti-European Union camps have temporarily suspended their campaigns, with just a week to go until Britons vote on their country’s membership of the bloc.

Cameron tweeted that he wouldn’t travel to Gibraltar for a campaign rally on Thursday evening.
