Samos Island: Sevan Nişanyan is a Turkish-Armenian linguist and travel writer. An author of a number of books, Nişanyan was awarded the Ayşe Nur Zarakolu Liberty Award of the Turkish Human Rights Association in 2004 for his contributions to greater freedom of speech.
On July 14 Sevan Nisanyan, a famous jailed intellectual, announcing he’d escaped from a Turkish prison. He had been behind bars since January 2014 and wasn’t eligible for parole for another 10 years.
he’s a self-taught architect who renovated his home village of Sirince in the hills above the Greco-Roman ruins of Ephesus, turning it into a tourist attraction on Turkey’s Aegean coast. That’s what got him in trouble In late July, Nisanyan surfaced in Greece, where he received a temporary resident permit and has applied for political asylum.
Nisanyan, found new life in one of the Greek Island called Samos and is doing almost exactly what he use to do in Turkey, writing and rebuilding villages with his newly married wife Ira Tzourou both are very active.
Wally Sarkeesian, this man is fearless when I decided to go see him at Samos Island. I kept my trip very secret for his safety and security. After I arrived at the Island, he told me no worry the Turkish Government is very happy that I left.
Nişanyan, a graduate of Yale and Columbia, whittled away his time locked up by writing, reading, and debating with his fellow inmates — “professional thieves, drug sellers, plenty of murderers, organized gang personnel, armed robbers, wife-stabbers, con artists, the lot.” He spent 3.5 years of an 11.5-year prison sentence in eight facilities, not all of which were quite as pleasant as Foça. “A couple of them were horrible,” “[There was] extraordinary overcrowding. 120 people in a ward designed for 40.”

The World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT 2019) opens in Yerevan and will last three days from October 6 to 9
WCIT is the signature event of the World Information Technology & Services Alliance (WITSA). WITCA is the consortium of ICT associations of 83 countries, representing 90% of the IT industry. For 40 years, technology leaders—CEOs and investors, policy makers and government officials, academics and technologists—have joined in this annual event to discuss the state of the industry, where it is headed, and what it means for our future.
In previous years, WCIT was hosted by Brasília, Brazil’s capital city, Taipei and India’s Hayderabad.
Over 2,500 from 70 countries are participating in this year’s Congress. This year, WCIT will address The Power of Decentralization: Promise and Peril and explore how information and communications technology is transforming our lives for better and for worse, and its impact on profits and prosperity, safety and security, democracy and humanity.
The Congress is hosted by Armenia with the support and under the high patronage of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, and the main organizing body is the Union of Advanced Technology Enterprises (UATE).

This morning, I was pleased to interview Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly) Western Region Director Mihran Toumajan, who shed light on the Assembly’s advocacy work in Washington, DC, and, in particular, the significant results of the organization’s 2019 National Advocacy Conference & Gala in DC two weeks ago during which Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, Rep. Jackie Speier, was honored by the Assembly with the Governor George Deukmejian Award for Public Service. Congresswoman Speier has been a persistent, effective champion of the United States-Armenia relationship for decades, and her leadership has been critical in forging ever-stronger ties between the governments and people of the United States and Armenia.
Over 80 Armenian Assembly of America activists and volunteer State Chairs, spanning 15 states plus the District of Columbia, advocated for stronger U.S.-Armenia and U.S.-Artsakh relations, and for congressional recognition of and restorative justice for the Armenian Genocide during two days of meetings with Members and staff of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives on Capitol Hill — over 120 meetings in total. As an immediate result of the Hill meetings, two Republican Members of the Arizona congressional delegation — Representatives David Schweikert and Paul Gosar — joined the Congressional Armenian Caucus. More information about the Assembly’s advocacy work and its flagship summer internship programs in DC and in Armenia for college students are available at: www.aaainc.org.
