GagruleLiv interview Armenian Assembly of America Western Region Director Mihran Toumajan, The advocacy work in Washington, DC. Video.

October 2, 2019 By administrator

By Wally Sarkeesian

This morning, I was pleased to interview Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly) Western Region Director Mihran Toumajan, who shed light on the Assembly’s advocacy work in Washington, DC, and, in particular, the significant  results of the organization’s 2019 National Advocacy Conference & Gala in DC two weeks ago during which Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, Rep. Jackie Speier, was honored by the Assembly with the Governor George Deukmejian Award for Public Service. Congresswoman Speier has been a persistent, effective champion of the United States-Armenia relationship for decades, and her leadership has been critical in forging ever-stronger ties between the governments and people of the United States and Armenia.

On Facebook:

Over 80 Armenian Assembly of America activists and volunteer State Chairs, spanning 15 states plus the District of Columbia, advocated for stronger U.S.-Armenia and U.S.-Artsakh relations, and for congressional recognition of and restorative justice for the Armenian Genocide during two days of meetings with Members and staff of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives on Capitol Hill — over 120 meetings in total. As an immediate result of the Hill meetings, two Republican Members of the Arizona congressional delegation — Representatives David Schweikert and Paul Gosar — joined the Congressional Armenian Caucus. More information about the Assembly’s advocacy work and its flagship summer internship programs in DC and in Armenia for college students are available at: www.aaainc.org.

by Wally Sarkeesian,

Three-time Los Angeles Area Emmy® Award-winning journalist Peter Musurlian does it all: produces, shoots, reports, writes, narrates, and edits his own short-form and long-form stories, videos, and documentaries.

Buttressed by a USC J-School bachelor’s degree, three master’s degrees, nine months of [post-Bosnian War] U.S. Army overseas reporting experience, and over 30 years of plying-his-trade in more than 20 states & 17 countries, Musurlian has garnered [since 2002] 10 Los Angeles Area Emmy® nominations, as well as 24 Golden Mikes, awarded by the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California. (rtna.org).

Musurlian has also been nominated 10 times, for his documentary work, by the Los Angeles Press Club, which recognizes journalistic excellence in the second largest media market in the USA. (lapressclub.org).

Most recently Musurlian won his third Los Angeles Area Emmy on July 27, 2019, at the Academy of Television Arts & Science’s Saban Media Center in North Hollywood.

His 52-minute documentary, Holocaust Soliloquy, ran on Los Angeles PBS station KLCS in May 2018, winning the Emmy in the Independent Programming Category.

Earlier this year, Musurlian, who shot, wrote, and edited the entire film, won a First Place Los Angeles Press Club Award for Best Videography, beating out two entries from the powerhouse KCET team.

The documentary can be found on the website: www.peterfischl.com and a link to Musurlian’s Emmy speech has been uploaded to YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WRYgRuKP9E

Musurlian won his first Emmy in 2012, for a 30-minute (solo) documentary, Burbank’s African Sister City, which he shot, wrote, narrated, and edited. In 2016, Musurlian, and a team from The Burbank Channel, won Emmys for their various roles in the production of the Mayor’s State-of-the-City video.

Musurlian, who grew up in Torrance and received his bachelor’s degree from USC, and master’s degrees from Baylor University, American University, and the University of Redlands, has had 10 Emmy nominations since 2002 and has garnered 24 Golden Mikes from the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California.

Among certain members of the Armenian Community, Musurlian is perhaps best known for his hard-hitting coverage of Members of Congress Jean Schmidt of Ohio, Steve Cohen of Tennessee, and California Assemblyman Mike Gatto, who all, to varying degrees, exhibited hostility toward Armenians and/or Armenian issues.

A former congressional aide, Musurlian has worked at television stations in Montana, Texas, Burbank, and Washington, DC.

Armenia is a small country but with many traditions and peculiarities. The talented and gifted people in the Armenian people will be very much appreciated, especially in the field of culture and art.

“Culture is the heart of the nation, if it does not strike, the nation will die,” said Vergine Alaverdyan, the author of the “Return to the Roots” project, a puppet-maker, a costume designer and designer, in an interview with Gagrule.net

Vergine Alaverdyan is the author of more than 500 dolls, more than a thousand costumes, over thirty national costumes, ornaments.

Vergine Alaverdyan is a real devotee of the nation. She has created collections of national cultural values without any sponsor, giving her unselfish time to these works.

Vergine Alaverdyan not only creates these values, but also transmits her creative talent with her hands to the younger generation, promoting the preservation and dissemination of national values.

Referring to the “Return to the Roots” project, Vergine Alaverdyan mentioned that the program is a song and dance show which presents a collection of costumes of different regions of Armenia, Sasun, Artsakh, Zangezur, Lori, Alashkert, Javakhk, Akhltskha, Karno and other costumes.

“We have many invitations from different corners of the world, but I have set a goal to accomplish what I have planned and then present it to other corners of the world. We will be very glad to take part in different events, festivals with our concerts and demonstrations, but they should not contradict our principles, and for us it is the return to the roots, “said V. Sargsyan. Alaverdyan.
