Iraqi lawyer ‘tortured’ in Istanbul

ISTANBUL – Demirören News Agency

An Iraqi lawyer has filed a criminal complaint, claiming that two men tortured him in Istanbul, forcing him to wear women underwear as they took his photos and videos to extort money.

According to the lawyer, identified as J.A., his former co-worker Erhan Ç. was the main culprit behind the scheme.

Erhan Ç., a Turkish driver, was reportedly convicted in Iraq for stealing 238,000 U.S. dollars from the car of the owner of the company he worked for in Iraq.

He was released after staying in an Iraqi prison for one year, thanks to the amnesty declared in the country

After entering Turkey illegally, Erhan Ç. allegedly called the company’s lawyer, J.A., and promised to return the money he stole from their boss, if the lawyer can come to Istanbul.

Believing that the former employee regretted his past actions, the Iraqi lawyer agreed and arrived in Istanbul on April 19.

The Turkish man picked J.A from the airport with four of his friends and brought him to his apartment where the Iraqi would be tortured for days by the five men.

The gang allegedly forced the lawyer to wear women underwear, taking videos and photos depicting him as if he was sexually abused.

“They took $2,700 and my cellphones. They threatened to post the photos to my family if I don’t give them $200,000,” the lawyer told the police.

J.A. returned to Iraq to find the money and put his car and apartment on sale, but the gang waited only a few days before sending the photos to the Iraqi’s son, wife and boss through WhatsApp.

The Iraqi lawyer returned Turkey and filed a criminal complaint on May 4, but all suspects remain at large.

According to the initial findings of the investigation launched by Büyükçekmece Chief Prosecutor’s Office, Erhan Ç. was given refugee status by the United Nations in Iraq, where he “escaped” following the 2016 coup attempt in Turkey.

“We have included in the file all the evidence, including security camera footage at the Istanbul airport, pro-Gülen social media posts of the suspect and his WhatsApp messages,” attorney Pirozhan Karali said.

Turkey: HDP Co-chair Demirtaş is being overtly tortured in prison: HDP lawmaker

December 7, 2016 By administrator

The co-chair of the opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) is being overtly subjected to torture in prison, a HDP lawmaker has said, commenting on the imprisonment of HDP co-leader Selahattin Demirtaş.

“Isolation is a form of torture and our lawmakers and co-chairs are being overtly subjected to torture,” HDP deputy Meral Danış Beştaş said before visiting Demirtaş in the prison in the northwestern province of Edirne, adding that “lawlessness is being implemented.”

“There is isolation, restrictions and lawlessness in every sense,” she said.

Nine lawmakers from the HDP, as well its co-chairs, Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, were arrested on Nov. 4 in a probe that was launched against 14 of the party’s lawmakers over alleged links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Saying that Turkey should rectify its mistake, Beştaş noted that “no good can come to Turkey with it.”

“The fact that the co-chair of Turkey’s third biggest party is kept under torture and restrictions doesn’t do anything to benefit Turkey, and Turkey needs to rectify its mistake as soon as possible,” she said.

After being imprisoned, Demirtaş requested to serve his prison sentence in the same cell as one of the party’s lawmakers from the eastern province of Hakkari, Abdullah Zeydan, who was arrested on Nov. 6 and brought to the same prison in Edirne. Demirtaş’s request was rejected.

Accompanied by HDP lawmakers Burcu Çelik Özkan and Erol Dora, Beştaş said the fact that Demirtaş’s aforementioned request was rejected was against decisions by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

“We are here today for Demirtaş’s prison conditions. Unfortunately, he is still being kept in isolation alone. Despite the fact that Zeydan is also serving here, Demirtaş’s and his requests to stay together were rejected,” she said.

Beştaş also said the prison staff were restricting the number of letters that Demirtaş can write.

“We filed applications on three matters and one concerned the letters. Mr. Demirtaş’s parliamentary group meeting talk wasn’t given. It was given after two weeks and it was censored. His letters to European parliamentarians were also not given. This is not acceptable,” she added.

Turkey, 113 children tortured in Turkish prisons or in custody in 2014: NGO

November 20, 2014 By administrator

ISTANBUL

n_74594_1Forty-nine children have been subjected to torture in Turkish prisons in 2014, while another 64 have been tortured in police custody, a leading Turkish human rights NGO stated in a report released to mark World Children’s Day on Nov. 20.

The Human Rights Association (İHD) stressed that the figures only represent cases reported to activists and that many victims are hesitant to denounce officials for fear of facing retribution.

So far in 2014, some 360 children have been detained during public incidents or demonstrations, 59 have been arrested and 42 have suffered injury, the report said.

“Children are the utmost victims in terms of human rights violations,” the İHD report said.

The İHD criticized the Justice Ministry for remaining silent in cases of violence and sexual abuse against children in prisons, and called for the release of all child convicts.

The report also drew a bleak picture of the grave social conditions for children, particularly emphasizing the lack of state action against child labor and child marriages.

It also emphasized that children have a right to be part of the decision-making process regarding issues that concern them.

Azerbaijani general who tortured Armenian hostage, is called murderer even in his homeland

August 12, 2014 By administrator

It turned out that the hands of the General of the Azerbaijani army Rovshan Akbarov who during the interrogation had tortured Karen Petrosyan, the hostage from the tortured-armenianArmenian village Chinari, are in blood of not only the Armenians but also the Azerbaijanis, the news agency “Pastinfo” informs. It writes that the Azerbaijani bloggers and Internet users write about it openly.
Akperov is one of the youngest generals of the Azerbaijani army. By the end of the Artsakh war, he had a grea prestige among the military leadership of Azerbaijan. Akperov has provided services to President Heydar and Ilham Aliyevs more than once, eliminating those Azerbaijani veterans of Karabakh war who were hampering the implementation of their plans.

Probably as gratitude for these services in 1998 Akperov was appointed commander of the Fourth Army Corps of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan. And now, according to Azerbaijani sources, he claims for the ministerial post. In this context, apparently, another heroic act was the “accidental” death of the innocent Armenian young man.

Thus, according to the Azerbaijani media, Shamkhor Corps headed by him is the most corrupt one. Here are recorded large numbers of unsolved mysterious deaths of soldiers.

As for the moral character of Akperov, then he has always been distinguished by the fact that he had periodically arranged fights while being drunk. In 1996, he has even been taken to the police station for being intoxicated.

Akperov has once become a cause of a road accident, when he once again had a conflict with the police. All of these cases at the time caused extensive discussions among the Azerbaijani users, one of them even came to the conclusion that “Akperov is not the person he means to be. No one should trust him.”

However, the most important chapter of his biography is that 10 years ago he in Kiev he had killed one of his compatriots. This case entered even the European Court. Of the document of the European Court it became clear that in 2001 Akperov who was passing training at a military school in Ukraine, had a dispute with the Azerbaijani entrepreneur Elchin Aliyev and killed him by a knife. The Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine prepared the documents and sent to the Azerbaijani prosecutor’s office, but the case was hushed up, and Akperov remained unpunished.
