Russia and Iraq restored scheduled commercial airline services on Sunday for the first time since 2004, in what officials hailed as a sign of stability returning to the war-torn country.

An Iraqi Airways plane left Baghdad at 10.31 am (0731 GMT) and was expected to arrive at Moscow’s Vnukovo airport at 2.19 pm (1119 GMT), according to the Russian airport’s online departure and arrival timetables.

“The first commercial flight arrives today,” Sergei Izvolsky, spokesman for Russia’s civil aviation authority, told AFP.

“It is a signal on the part of the Iraqi authorities that Russian nationals can safely visit Iraq.”

The two countries may also later agree on air travel to the Iraqi city of Basra, Izvolsky said.

Russia suspended regular flights to Iraq in 2004 after the US-led invasion in 2003 plunged the Arab country into war.

Russia Fueling Armenian enemy: Turkey Signs Deal To Buy S-400 Anti aircraft Missiles From Russia

September 12, 2017 By administrator

The S-400 antiaircraft missile system will be Ankara’s most significant weapons purchase to date from a non-NATO supplier. (file photo)

Turkey has signed a deal with Russia to buy S-400 anti aircraft missile systems in its first major weapons purchase from Moscow.

Turkish newspapers on September 12 quoted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as saying that Ankara already paid the deposit on the deal, estimated to be worth up to $2.5 billion.

Speaking to journalists aboard his presidential plane returning from a trip to Kazakhstan, Erdogan also said that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin were “determined on this issue.”

Moscow confirmed the accord, with Vladimir Kozhin, a military adviser to Putin, saying that “the contract has been signed and is being prepared for implementation.”

Kozhin also said that “all the decisions made for the contract strictly comply” with Russia’s strategic interests.

The accord, Ankara’s most significant weapons purchase from a non-NATO supplier, has raised concerns in the West over technical compatibility with NATO equipment.

An unidentified NATO official was quoted as saying that the alliance did receive information on the purchase of the Russian-made missile system by Turkey.

The official also said that it was “up to allies to decide what military equipment they buy,” adding, “What matters for NATO is that the equipment allies acquire is able to operate together.”

“No NATO ally currently operates the S-400,” the official added.

Joseph Dunford, the U.S. chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in July that the purchase of the S-400 air-defense system from Russia “would be a concern” for Washington.

The Pentagon has also sounded the alarm, saying that “generally it’s a good idea” for NATO allies to buy interoperable equipment.

But Erdogan insisted on September 12 that Turkey was free to make military acquisitions based on its defense needs.

“We make the decisions about our own independence ourselves,” he said. “We are obliged to take safety and security measures in order to defend our country.”

Russia says the S-400 surface-to-air missile system has a range of 400 kilometers and can shoot down up to 80 targets simultaneously.

It deployed the system at its air base near Latakia in western Syria in December 2015 after a Turkish fighter jet shot down a Russian warplane on the Turkish-Syrian border in late 2015, causing a diplomatic rift between Moscow and Ankara.

But Turkey has been establishing closer links with Russia after its recent souring of ties with the United States over a number of issues, including U.S. support of Syrian Kurdish fighters that Ankara considers terrorists.

Meanwhile, Russia’s relations with the United States and NATO have been in crisis over its annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region in March 2014, its backing of separatists in eastern Ukraine, and other issues.

Over 200 Daesh terrorists killed in airstrike in Dayr al-Zawr: Russia

August 20, 2017 By administrator

Russia’s Defense Ministry says the country’s aircraft have eliminated more than 200 Daesh terrorists on their way to the eastern Syrian city of Dayr al-Zawr.

The operation also destroyed around 20 SUVs laden with large-caliber weapons and mortars, as well as armored vehicles, including tanks, the Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

The city contains relatively large concentrations of the Takfiri group’s terrorists and is subject to offensives by both the Syrian Army and its allies, and the Russian warplanes.

The Ministry said the city was now witnessing “international terrorists…trying to regroup and equip their last base in Syria.”

“The defeat of ISIS (Daesh) in the Dayr al-Zawr region will be a strategic defeat for the international terrorist group in the Syrian Arab Republic,” the statement said.

Earlier in the month, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said if the group lost the city, it would potentially mean it had suffered an ultimate defeat.

“This is perhaps the main point at the Euphrates, which will in many ways indicate the end of the fight against ISIS,” he said.

Dayr al-Zawr, however, still contains some 125,000 civilians, a fact that could slow down the military operations targeting the city.

Bouthaina Shaaban, the political and media adviser to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, said in an interview on Friday that the six-year-old foreign-backed militancy in her country was nearly over as foreign states had cut their backing for Takfiri terrorist groups.

On Sunday, Assad said the assistance provided by main allies, Russia, Iran, and Lebanon’s Hezbollah resistance movement to the country’s counter-terrorism operations, had enabled the Syrian Army to make battlefield gains and reduce the burden of war.

Russia surveillance aircraft flies over Washington secure airspace

August 10, 2017 By administrator

Russia surveillance aircraft flies over Washington secure airspaceA Russian surveillance aircraft has made a low altitude flight over the Pentagon, the Capitol and other US government buildings in Washington.

The Russian Air Force Tupolev Tu-154 made its flight on Wednesday as part of the Treaty on Open Skies, which allows military aircraft from the US, Russia and 32 other nations to engage in aerial observation flights on each others’ territories, in a move which is aimed at promoting transparency.

The Capitol Police issued an alert prior to the flight noting that an “authorized low-altitude aircraft” would be passing over without announcing its origins.

“The aircraft will be large and may fly directly over the US Capitol,” it said, adding, “This flight will be monitored by US Capitol Police and other federal government agencies.”

The recent flight is scheduled to be followed by another one over US President Donald Trump’s property in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he is currently vacationing.

According to a law enforcement source, US Air Force personnel were on board the Russian plane, which has the capability of engaging in various intelligence-gathering operations.

According to the US State Department, the treaty “is designed to enhance mutual understanding and confidence by giving all participants, regardless of size, a direct role in gathering information through aerial imaging on military forces and activities of concern to them.”

The proposed purchase of Russian missiles S-400 by Turkey would be directed against Armenia and its “Iskander M”

August 6, 2017 By administrator

Russia,S-400“In the event of intervention by Russia during an armed conflict in Artaskh (Nagorno-Karabakh), Turkey will respond in support of Azerbaijan,” said Azerbaijani deputy Rasim Mousabekov. This statement follows Ankara’s intention to buy from Russia, C-400 missile batteries. Last April, Ankara and Moscow approved the planned delivery of Russian-made S-400 missiles to Turkey.

A Russian newspaper writes that when Turkey decided to buy these weapons, the stated objective was to strengthen its air defense. But later, well-informed sources reportedly asserted that these purchases of Russian missiles S-400 not Turkey – which has not yet been realized – were directed against Armenia.

During the Turkish-Azerbaijani military exercises last June, this option would have been discussed between Ankara and Baku. Baku who felt very badly the information of the Russian delivery of the missiles “Iskander M” to Armenia. Thus the objective of the likely purchase of Ankara C-400 missiles would be to counter Armenia in the event of an attack by the “Iskander M” that only Armenia owns in the region.

Russian ban on Turkish tomatoes bears domestic fruit, inspired Russia to become self-sufficient in tomato production

August 4, 2017 By administrator

MOSCOW – Reuters,

A ban on Turkish tomato imports that was motivated by geopolitics has inspired Russia to become self-sufficient in tomato production, a windfall for companies who invested in the technology that would increase year-round production.

Russia has been ramping up production of meats, cheese and vegetables since it banned most Western food imports in 2014 as a retaliatory measure for sanctions meant to punish Russia’s support of rebels in eastern Ukraine and annexation of Crimea.

After Turkey shot down a Russian jet near the Syrian border in November 2015, Moscow expanded the ban to include Turkish goods, including tomatoes, for which Russia was the biggest export market.

Ties between Ankara and Moscow have since largely normalized and all restrictions have been lifted but the ban on tomatoes remains in place and may not be lifted for another three to five years, officials have said.

That may be too late for Turkish exporters if Russian efforts to ramp up domestic production bear fruit.

Greenhouse projects being built with state support are key to Russia’s plans to become self-sufficient for its 144 million population by 2020, industry players, analysts and officials say.

Although Russia only imports about 500,000 tons of the 3.4 million tons of tomatoes consumed annually, the country’s notoriously harsh winters have limited its ability to ramp up to full capacity, IKAR agriculture consultancy said.

Currently only 620,000 tons of production comes from “protected ground”, or greenhouses, IKAR said. The remainder comes from “open ground” productive only from June to September, and most of that comes from private plots maintained and used by individual families or sold at local farmers’ markets.

Sergey Korolyov, the head of National Fruit and Vegetable Producers’ Union, estimated that greenhouse projects that have already started growing tomatoes could start seeing their money back in 8-9 years thanks to state support, which includes partial investment compensation and favorable loan rates.

“Now greenhouses which were originally built for cucumbers are being repurposed for tomatoes,” Korolyov told Reuters.

Although the greenhouse sector is dominated by dozens of small-size firms, several big players have also stepped in.

Russian conglomerate Sistema, bought the country’s largest Yuzhnyi greenhouse complex in December 2015, when the ban on Turkish supplies was announced.

The 144-hectare complex produces more than 45,000 tons of tomatoes and cucumbers per year.

“We were slightly lucky in this case – we bought the asset which was already working with good quality, customers and employees,” said Sistema’s senior vice president Ali Uzdenov.

The decline of the ruble currency against the dollar since mid-2014 has helped by making tomato imports less competitive, he said.

Other large vegetable producers include Russia’s second biggest food retailer Magnit, with a 84-hectare complex.

Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich, who is in charge of the agriculture sector, said the government is fully behind the effort.

“We need to achieve a certain share of independence from import supplies to stabilize the domestic market. And we will be supporting these projects,” Dvorkovich told Reuters in June.

But with so much of tomato production taking place in people’s private plots, imports will continue to be important in the near-term, he added.

The plan does not bode well for Turkey. As much as 70 percent of the country’s tomato exports went to Russia in 2015, earning Turkish growers $259 million, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute.

When the ban was put in place, most of the slack was taken up by Morocco, Azerbaijan and Belarus.

Ankara proposed in May that Moscow lift the ban outside of the main harvest season.

Asked about Turkey’s proposal, Dvorkovich said it might work, but only for local production of tomato paste or juices.

GagruleLive: Russia Fueling Armenia’s Enemy Turkey, time to abandon Russia “Video”

July 31, 2017 By administrator

"Russia fueling Armenia's Enemy" By Origins: Discovery
It’s true that Moscow has taken advantage of Armenians, as if they were pawns, for many centuries in the larger chess game between powers they play, even today:
1. They fooled Armenians during WWI by telling them that Mother Russia was here to save them from the Turks and then completely withdrew because of the 1917 Russian Revolution leaving Armenians helpless (they could have left a few troops if they were genuine);
2. Stalin gave gold and arms to the Turks in 1918 to allow Ataturk to take Masis and invade Eastern Armenia;
3. Stalin then invaded Armenia in 1918 as well, to subjucate Armenians for 7 decades and try and destroy the Armenian Church with Communism;
4. Stalin also amended the Armenian SSR boundary in 1922 to give Artsakh to the Azeris (and Nakhchivan) – but this was just a provincial boundary and when the Soviet Union fell it had no legal meaning as the collapse of Soviet law gave the right to self-determination and independence to Armenia, Azerbaijan… and Artsakh (Artsakhpress.am);
5. Russia then stopped the Armenia in the 90s when the Armenians had beaten the Azeris and could have gone all the way to Baku to force a peace treaty which would have saved countless lives lost in the past 25 years; and
6. Russia today arms the Azeris and the Turks, while ‘defending’ Armenia and influencing the Armenian people with pervasive propoganda against the West – as if Russia is Armenia’s only option as a ‘friend’.

US sanctions against Russia ‘in Armenia’s interests’ – analyst  Levon Shirinyan

The United States’ move to enforce fresh sanctions against Russia gives absolutely no ground for concern, especially to Armenia, according a Yerevan-based political analyst.
Speaking to Tert.am, Levon Shirinyan described the Trump administration’s recent decision as an attempt to ‘constrain Russia’s appetite’.
“Russia’s expansionist appetite is really big, as they want to seize Donbass, Ukraine and Armenia,” he said, blaming the country also for provoking repeated hostilities between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“With those sanctions now, the United States are making attempts to moderate that appetite,” Shirinyan added.

The expert said he also sees Russian attempts to establish dominance over Armenia through soft power. “While they now propose giving Russian a state language status, sometime in the future, they may urge us to change also our religion. That’s a Russian style of acting, a way of seizing [Armenia],” he noted.

US sanctions against Russia ‘in Armenia’s interests’ – analyst

That’s a Russian style of acting, a way of seizing [Armenia],” he noted.

Shirinyan attributed the country’s somewhat uneasy conduct to inability to maintain the one-time strong influence over the South Caucasus region. He also criticized Russia’s return move to reduce its diplomatic staff in the country as an absolutely non-adequate reaction.

“Russia will have to moderate [its ambitions]. They have no other choice. Nothing is developing in Russia – neither economy, nor agriculture and nor even science. Whatever they have created so far was due to the technologies [imported] from the West. So they are now blocking that way,” he added.

Russia agreed to transfer technology along with S-400 missile systems to Turkey

July 28, 2017 By administrator

Russia s-400 TurkeyHurriyet daily Report: Russia has agreed to transfer the technology of S-400 anti-ballistic missile systems, and it constitutes the most advantageous aspect of the deal between the two countries, Presidential Spokesperson İbrahim Kalın has said, informing that the agreement between the two states will soon be concluded.

“One of our most important gains [by the purchase of] S-400 [missiles] won’t only meet Turkey’s security needs but also will bring about the transfer of this technology. This [aspect] has been put very openly in our agreement with Russians and in talks held by our president with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin,” Kalın told private broadcaster Habertürk TV in an interview late July 27.

“And Russians said ‘alright’ to this,” he added.

Turkey and Russia have been negotiating for the former’s purchase of high-tech S-400 anti-ballistic missile systems after the Turkish government was disappointed at its NATO allies for rejecting know-how of the similar systems they wanted to sell to Turkey. The United States issued concerns over Turkey’s bid to purchase a Russian defense system while NATO underlined that the S-400s will not be interoperable with NATO’s overall anti-ballistic defense system.

Kalın, however, stressed that this should not be seen only as a purchase of military equipment but the beginning of a transformation of the Turkish defense industry with the transfer of such sophisticated anti-missile system.

“We are at a very good point in terms of [the deal on] S-400s and it’s expected that it will soon be finalized. And the argument that this system cannot be integrated into the NATO system is not correct,” he said, adding that there were only a few minor issues left to be accomplished with regards to the agreement, but the core of it had been agreed.

Kalın expressed Ankara’s disappointment with its allies’ refusal to share technology about the missile systems they wanted to sell to Turkey, saying, “The model they suggested stipulates Turkey’s eternal dependence on them.”
