Armenian “Orphans of the Genocide” movie selected for national PBS distribution

207063Documentary film production company Armenoid Productions announced Monday, February 29 that the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) has selected its award-winning “Orphans of the Genocide” documentary by Bared Maronian for national distribution to over 300 public television stations. The documentary is scheduled for national broadcast across PBS stations by April 24.

“I urge Armenian-Americans nationwide to contact their local public television station’s programming department to urge them to air the special 60-minute version of “Orphans of the Genocide” sponsored by NETA,” said Maronian. “This is a great honor that NETA has selected a documentary on the Armenian Genocide as part of their select number of programming recommendations to national PBS stations.”

The National Educational Telecommunications Association is a professional association that serves public television licensees and educational entities in all 50 states, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. The four-time Regional Emmy Award winner filmmaker Maronian’s “Orphans of the Genocide” documentary has been previously screened on select PBS stations nationwide. The documentary weaves historical archives with interviews and memoirs of Armenian orphans establishing irrevocable proof of the Armenian Genocide.

Maronian is currently completing his new documentary project, “Women of 1915,” dealing with Armenian and non-Armenian women heroines who lived through the atrocities of WWI and survived to retell stories of strength, perseverance, and empowerment.

First broadcast on KCET Los Angeles slated for Wednesday, April 8 at 9 p.m.

LOS ANGELES—Millions of television viewers across Southern California and around the country will have a chance to see the award-winning documentary by “Orphans of the Genocide,” produced by Bared Maronian.

The national broadcast of the documentary will kick off on Wednesday at 9 p.m. on KCET Channel 28, LA’s independent station. The program will repeat on April 12 at 5 p.m. and April 25 at 4 p.m.

“Orphans of the Genocide” will also air on the nationwide LinkTV channel and online service available via satellite providers DirectTV and Dish Network. LinkTV will broadcast the program on Thursday April 23 at 4 p.m. Pacific time (7 p.m. Eastern); Saturday April 25, 5 a.m. Pacific (8 a.m. Eastern); and on Sunday April 26, 3 p.m. Pacific (6 p.m. Eastern).

“Orphans of the Genocide” weaves historical archives with interviews and memoirs of Armenian orphans to establish irrevocable proof of the Armenian Genocide. An emotional, visual journey through never-before-seen archival footage and memoirs of orphans who lived through the last century’s first, fully documented and least recognized genocide in 1915, “Orphans of the Genocide” features insightful interviews with such prominent figures and scholars as British journalist Robert Fisk, Clark University’s Director of Strassler Family Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Professor Debora Dwork, and Armenian-American Dr. Jack Kevorkian among others.

Over the last several years, “Orphans of the Genocide” has been broadcast on PBS stations nationwide, reaching over 12 million viewers. Additionally, the documentary has been invited to participate at various events and film festivals throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, as well as in the Middle East and South America, earning numerous awards.

“Orphans of the Genocide,” a documentary by Bared Maronian, has been nominated for a 2014 Regional Emmy Award by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Suncoast Chapter in the documentary – historical category. This is the 38th Annual Suncoast Emmy Awards, which three years ago nominated the 7-minute version of the Orphans of the Genocide for a Regional Emmy Award.

“Orphans of the Genocide” weaves historical archives with interviews and memoirs of Armenian orphans to establish irrevocable proof of the Armenian Genocide. ‘Orphans of the Genocide’ Screens in Buenos Aires

BUENO AIRES (Prensa Armenia)—With a large audience from the Armenian community of Buenos Aires, the documentary “Orphans of the Genocide” by Bared Maronian, who is currently touring South America, was screened bared-buenos-aireson Tuesday. Argentine filmmaker Andres Habegger also participated in the event organized by the Armenian National Committee of South America (CNA) and attended by the Ambassador of Armenia in Argentina, Vahagn Melikian, along with the Consul of the Embassy, Estera Mkrtumyan.

“There are a lot of films about the genocide, but there is no specific film on its many thousands of orphans,” said Maronian after the screening. “I wanted to show the human factor about them; their words, their feelings….” Maronian also revealed details about his next project on Armenian women.

Bared Maronian worked on public television in the United States and has been awarded several times for his productions; four times the regional Emmy Miami and Latin Grammy nomination. He is founder of Armenoid Team, an independent production company specializing in the production of films with Armenian themes. “Orphans of the Genocide” is inspired by an article by Robert Fisk published in The Independent, titled “Living Proof of the Armenian Genocide.”

The President of the CNA Khatchik Der Ghougassian noted, “Armenians knew a lot about the genocide, but we learned to express ourselves from Holocaust studies. After two generations of scholars and activists of the Armenian cause, today we can relate to others and show mankind what happened to us.”
