Sarkisian Awards Medal to Notorious Police General

January 7, 2017 By administrator

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)—President Serzh Sarkisian has awarded a state medal to the controversial commander of Armenian interior troops who played a key role in last July’s violent dispersal of an opposition demonstration in Yerevan.

General Levon Yeranosian, who is also a deputy chief of the national police, received the Medal for the Excellent Maintenance of Public Order through a presidential decree publicized late last week. The decree noted his “significant” contributions to “law and order” in the country.

Yeranosian was among high-ranking police officers that personally ordered and oversaw the use of what many in Armenia consider excessive force against scores of people who took to the streets to voice support for opposition gunmen occupying a police station.

Late on July 29, the protesters marched to Yerevan’s Sari Tagh neighborhood close to the besieged police facility in the Erebuni district. Firing stun grenades and tear gas, riot police dispersed the crowd after it ignored their demands to leave the “dangerous” area and go back to the city center.

More than 60 people were injured and hospitalized as a result. As the crowd fled Sari Tagh at least 14 journalists were ambushed and beaten up by a large group of plainclothes men wielding sticks.

Armenia’s leading opposition parties as well as local and international human rights groups strongly condemned the crackdown. The Armenian police responded by launching an “internal inquiry” into the violence. Five police officers, including Yeranosian’s brother Lernik, were suspended as a result.

The Sari Tagh violence broke out moments after Yeranosian shouted abuse at Zaruhi Postanjian, an opposition parliamentarian and one of the organizers of the protest.

“It’s hard to characterize [the award] with decent words,” Postanjian said on Wednesday. “If I were a man, I would publicly swear at the one who awarded [the medal.]”

Diyarbakır Bar Association receives International Hrant Dink Award in Istanbul

September 23, 2016 By administrator

awardThe bar association in Turkey’s southeastern province of Diyarbakır has received the eighth International Hrant Dink Award, presented on Sept. 22 in a ceremony held at the Istanbul Lütfi Kırdar International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

In addition to the Diyarbakır Bar Association, Theresa Kachindamoto, a tribal chief from Malawi who works for children’s human rights and education rights, was also honored with an award at the ceremony.

The award committee said it was honoring the Diyarbakır Bar Association for “its impartiality, its sensitivity to human rights issues, its opposition to all manners of violence no matter who employs it or for what reason, for standing as a role-model in the region, for making constant and determined efforts to ensure effective investigation of human rights violations, its determined fight to prevent cases from being time-barred and to prevent impunity, for being able to use the language of peace at all times and never giving up its ideals for peace despite the heavy prices it had to pay.”

Ahmet Özmen received the award on behalf of the Diyarbakır Bar Association from the 2016 International Hrant Dink Award jury members Murathan Mungan and Rakel Dink, the wife of the late Hrant Dink, an Armenian-origin Turkish journalist who was assassinated in January 2007.

In his speech, Özmen paid tribute to former Diyarbakır Bar Association head Tahir Elçi, who was shot dead in the central Sur district of Diyarbakır on Nov. 28, 2015 after issuing a press statement demanding the protection of cultural heritage.

“Our fundamental and historic duty is to protect and to further flourish the legacy bestowed upon us by Tahir Elçi and Hrant Dink, to demand peace, and to raise our voice for building peace,” Özmen said after receiving the award.

Meanwhile, the 2015 International Hrant Dink Award laureate, LGBT rights group Kaos GL, also presented an award to International Hrant Dink Award laureate Theresa Kachindamoto, who has strived to overcome the economic difficulties leading to early marriages in her country Malawi.

Kachindamoto has created a fund to pay for the tuition of daughters of poor families and to encourage efforts to strengthen children’s bonds to school life, working tirelessly to change the lives of many young people.
“There is no doubt that I need to push more against the old ways of thinking to achieve my ultimate goal of removing child marriage from Malawi, and giving all girls and boys the opportunity to complete their education … But we still have a lot of work to do, for which I am prepared,” Kachindamoto said in her acceptance speech in Istanbul.

The opening speech of the ceremony was delivered by Ahmet İnsel, the head of the International Hrant Dink Award Committee, while singer Mehmet Erdem also gave a performance.

While receiving his prize Andre expressed his gratitude from the stage by thanking his fans from Armenia and Artsakh. This fact infuriated the Azerbaijani delegation. While receiving her prize, singer Aygun Kazimova announced from the stage:

“Thank you my Azerbaijan, thank you my Karabakh”.

Andre had informed us, that the problem had deeper roots.

While doing my sound check, I sang the Armenian song “Sari Aghjik”, which Azerbaijani people “conceder to be theirs”. But everyone knows, it’s an Armenian Folk song. Since then I’ve noticed some curious faces fixed on me”,-said the singer.

Earlier Azerbaijani press had spread rumors about Armenian song Sari Aghjik mentioning that Andre (whom they incorrectly named Sirusho) was about to sing Sari Aghjik during the concert but they had demanded the organizers to change the song.

But as far as we’re informed, Andre had intended to sing his song “Hum Hey” from the beginning.

In order to clarify this story we spoke with the organizer of Daf BAMA Music Awards, Roya Nadi.

“We had a very successful Award ceremony and were very pleased to have more than 30 artists from different countries and cultures attending. We had 20 different languages on our board, what makes our Event really special in its kind.

Regarding the Songs from Sirusho and Andre, I can insure, that we have chosen the songs about 3 weeks before the ceremony. The lineup was made days before the Event and there were no changes in any songs of any Artists during the day of the ceremony or before. We are a multicultural Award ceremony from Germany who respects all countries, cultures and religions. We are sure, that all the Artist who participate in our ceremony, respect this matter”,-she said.
