Karabakh: May 8 marks Shoushi liberation operation

May 8, 2016 By administrator

f572ef26b2d4c8_572ef26b2d4fe.thumbA Shoushi liberation operation 24 years ago proved a landmark in liberation of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The battle of Shoushi took place on May 8, 1992, and the town was liberated on May 9. Azerbaijani troops had until that time shelled the capital of Nagorno-Karabakh, Stepanakert.

The operation was launched in four directions. The Armenian forces established control over the Qirs positions and Lachin-Shoushi highway.

The operation plan was worked out under the command of Arkadi Ter-Tadevosyan, during March-April, 1992, and was based on the intelligence data.

The Armenian forces launched an offensive along a 25-km-long line, and reached the Armenian border on May 18.

Argentina marks Armenian Genocide anniversary

April 24, 2016 By administrator

210980Argentina marked the 101st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on Saturday, April 23 afternoon, with the President of the Senate, Federico Pinedo, and Jorge Macri, mayor of Vicente Lopez, Buenos Aires attending the commemoration ceremony, Prensa Armenia reports.

President Mauricio Macri sent a letter regretting not being able to attend. In his letter, he called for “everlasting memory of the victims, convinced that only respect for the highest values and principles will lead them to the road of peace and encounter.”

Pinedo said in his speech that it was “essential to remember the Armenian Genocide and repudiate the facts and attitudes of persecuting others for belonging to other ethnic groups.”

J. Macri, in turn, thanked the Armenian community for “building Argentina.”

The Armenian ambassador, Alexan Harutiunian, announced that Armenia will give the City of Buenos Aires a statue of St. Gregory of Narek to be placed in the Armenia Square of Palermo neighborhood, as a symbol of friendship and gratitude to Pope Francis for having recognized the Armenian Genocide on April 12, 2015.

Also, in a speech on behalf of the Armenian community of Argentina, it was announced a request to the country’s authorities “to require the implementation of measures designed to support the peace process and avoid truce fighting and loss of life of civilians and military” in Nagorno Karabakh.

Armenia marks Army Day

January 28, 2016 By administrator

army dayJanuary 28 is celebrated in Armenia as Army Day, and this year marks the 24th anniversary of the Armenian Armed Forces.

On that day in 1992, the Government of Armenia adopted the decision On the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia, and this became the beginning for the formation of the Armenian Armed Forces.

The first phase for the formation of the Armenian army, however, is considered to be from 1988 to 1992, when there was a challenge of ensuring the safety of the people of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. At the time, volunteer detachments were carrying out this task.

In September 1990, the Supreme Council of Armenia adopted a decision on forming a Special Regiment within the Internal Affairs Ministry of the time, and on May 4, 1991, the Committee of Defense was formed, with the Government’s decision.

And on September 25, 2002, the National Assembly made an amendment in the Law on Holidays and Memorial Days, whereby the Army Day became a non-working day in Armenia.

A series of events will be held all through Thursday to mark Army Day.
