Sarkozy to meet Putin as French right looks to Russia

October 28, 2015 By administrator

13052015 nicolas sarkozy_3_0Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy flew to Moscow Wednesday where he is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the latest sign the French right is seeking closer ties with the Kremlin in defiance of François Hollande’s government.

Sarkozy is due to meet with the Russian President on Wednesday accompanied by a cohort of senior members of his Les Républicains party – France’s centre-right main opposition party that was until recently known as the UMP.

The two men are set to hold an “exchange of views … on bilateral relations”, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, quoted by Russian state media. Top of the bill “is likely to be Syria”, he added.

The visit comes at a time of tense relations between Russia and the West, not least France, over Moscow’s military intervention in Syria where it has been accused of targeting moderate rebel forces, along with Islamic Stage group militants, in support of Putin’s ally Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Sarkozy: Hollande’s Russia policy ‘risks new cold war’

Hollande’s government has been one of the strongest Western opponents of involving Assad in any solution to the Syria conflict – a position that has put Paris at loggerheads with the Kremlin.

Russia was conspicuously absent from a meeting on Syria hosted by Paris on Tuesday, that included representatives from Germany, the UK, Saudi Arabia and the US.

Russia’s annexation of Crimea and support of separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine has also been a thorn in the side of relations between Paris and Moscow – one that led Hollande to scrap the sale to Russia of two French-built warships last year, a deal that was signed off by Sarkozy during his 2007–2012 presidency.

Sarkozy, along with others on the right of French politics, have become increasingly critical of Hollande’s hardline stance with Russia and have repeatedly called for a more conciliatory approach.

Sarkozy’s Russian trip, according to one party member, is designed to deliver a “particular message” to Putin.

That message is that “Europe must maintain a dialogue with Russia and that France, within Europe, has an important role to play, one it has not been playing for a long time”, Les Républicains MP Thierry Mariani told France Info radio.

Sarkozy himself recently accused Hollande of “a serious error of creating conditions for a new cold war with Russia”, a line that has also been used by far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen in criticising the French government’s dealings with Moscow.

French right’s ‘fascination with Putin’

Others within Les Républicains have called for France to cooperate with Russia over Syria, including working with Assad.

Russia has been “maligned so stupidly these last few years”, wrote Les Républicains former prime minister François Fillon in a recent blog post. “The time has come for France to revise its diplomatic strategy [in Syria].”

At the same time, a recent Ifop poll for French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche found that Putin is considerably more popular with right-wing voters. While the survey found negative opinions of the Russian leader were still the norm among the majority, 24 percent of Les Républicains supporters and 37 percent of National Front supporters said they had a “good opinion” of Putin, compared to 19 percent among supporters of Hollande’s Socialist Party (PS).

“There is a sort of fascination among the French right with Putin’s authoritarian regime, which explains [Sarkozy’s] visit,” Bruno Le Roux, leader of the PS in parliament, told France Info Wednesday.

However, he admitted there could be a certain “usefulness” to the former president’s meeting with Putin.

“Everyone has the right to talk,” he later told the AFP news agency. “There is a usefulness in maintaining relationships with all countries.”

“At the same time, in these sorts of moments, the position of France, the position which is that of Europe, must be kept in mind.

France Protects al-Qaeda Affiliates, Should Help Russia Instead Le Pen

October 9, 2015 By administrator

1026825551Instead of helping Russia to crash Islamic militants in Syria, France is doing the opposite – helping al-Qaeda-linked terrorists, said Marine Le Pen, the leader of French National Front party.
Le Pen criticized the French government, stating that it sides with the duplicitous policies of the United States. One can’t trust Washington’s policies anymore, Le Pen said on her Twitter account.

While Russia is fighting ISIL, trying to solve the Syrian crisis, France is “protecting” al-Nusra fighters, who represent the al-Qaeda terrorist organization in Syria, the French politician argued.

Instead of doing this senseless job, France should have been fighting ISIL alongside Russia in the Middle East, Le Pen said.
Meanwhile, Russia started precision airstrikes against ISIL targets in Syria on September 30, following a request from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.As of Friday, the Russian Air Force has carried out about 140 strikes against terrorist positions, destroying command centers, training camps and ammunition depots. Russian warships in the Caspian Sea also fired 26 cruise missiles on ISIL targets on Wednesday.
Currently, Le Pen’s National Front party has the largest number of seats in the European parliament among all French parties.
Earlier this week, Le Pen accused French President Francois Hollande of failing to stand for France’s national interests and following orders of Washington and Berlin.

France: Cash Investigation: Azerbaijan asked the CSA to sanction France 2

October 1, 2015 By administrator

arton116859-480x270PARIS (AFP) – Azerbaijan has seized Wednesday CSA calling for sanctions against France 2 to protest against a report that presented the country as a dictatorship, and during which the journalists of “Cash investigation” had been confiscating opponents interviews.

“The Republic of Azerbaijan has decided to ask the President of CSA to use its powers to initiate a sanctions procedure against France 2,” said in a statement the French lawyer of Azerbaijan, Olivier Pardo.

Azerbaijan has also filed a defamation suit Wednesday against the chain and journalists Elise Lucet and Laurent Richard with the court of Nanterre.

A trial that journalists are confident of winning, with the support of NGOs that want to take the opportunity to denounce the regime.

The story of “Cash investigation”, shot during the visit of Francois Hollande on site, presenting the country as a dictatorship and President Aliyev as a despot.

“France 2 journalists have clearly failed in their duty of rigor, honesty and impartiality (…) by choosing a partial vision, partial and oriented Azerbaijan” accuses the lawyer.

After shooting, two journalists from the magazine were confiscated interviews of opponents and advocates of human rights that they had made.

“We did our work as journalists, the struggle of Azerbaijan will be complicated” defends Laurent Richard Azerbaijan face the charges.

“We have been contacted by numerous organizations defending human rights, such as Reporters Without Borders and Amnesty International, who expect this trial to come forward to testify about the situation in Azerbaijan,” says the journalist of the First Agency lines, which produced the report.

The NGOs defending human rights accuse the Azerbaijani authorities have increased their repression against the opposition and civil society since the reelection of President Ilham Aliyev, 53, for a third term in 2013.

This former Soviet republic in the Caucasus comes 162nd out of 180 in the world ranking of freedom of the press RSF 2015, who notes “a unprecedented wave of repression.”

In a similar procedure in 2011, the president’s daughter Lola Karimova ouzbekh had filed a complaint against the website Rue 89 who described it in an article as a “dictator’s daughter” and accused him of “whiten” the image of the countries.

The 17th Chamber of the High Court of Paris had dismissed the complaint for defamation.
