Garo Paylan awarded Gold Medal of Yerevan State University

Turkish lawmaker of Armenian descent Garo Paylan who is visiting Armenia to attend the 6th Pan-Armenian Armenia-Diaspora conference, held meetings today with students of different department at Yerevan State University (YSU).

As the University press department reported, Paylan delivered short speech and participated in the Q&A session with students and professorship.

YSU Vice-rector on Students, Alumni and Public Relations Ruben Markosyan welcomed the guest and awarded Paylan the YSU gold medal, the source said.

Armenian Servicemen awarded for thwarting Azerbaijani February 26 infiltration attempt

Defense Minister of the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh Republic) Colonel General Levon Mnatsakanyan toured number of military units in the southeastern direction of the Artsakh Defense Army and handed presidential awards to servicemen who had neutralized the Azerbaijani infiltration attempt on February 25.

Commending the awardees for the excellent service and congratulating on the honor received from the Commander-in-Chief, the Army commander called for keeping vigilance high and staying ready to prevent the adversary’s provocations.

To remind, on the night of 25 February, at around 03:00 and 04:00, the Azerbaijani forces made attack attempts at the southeastern (Martuni) and eastern (Akna) directions of the Line of Contact between the Nagorno Karabakh Republic (NKR) and Azerbaijan by using respective demining equipment and special measures.

As the NKR Defense Ministry reports in a released statement, the NKR frontline units timely detected the advancement of the Azerbaijani forces in both directions due to video devices and repelled them to their positions causing losses. Due to the countermeasures taken by the Armenian forces, the adversary suffered casualties and has wounded. Several bodies were left in the neutral zone.

France: Lyon Mayor awarded Armenia’s Order of Honor

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan visited the Bellecour Square in Lyon today and laid a wreath at the memorial to the Armenian Genocide victims, President’s Press Office reports.

Later the day President Sargsyan had a meeting with Lyon Mayor Gérard Collomb. The President expressed gratitude to the Mayor for careful attitude towards Armenia-related issued.

Serzh Sargsyan said that Mayor Collomb’s efforts aimed at reinforcement of friendship between the two peoples and his principled stance on Armenian Genocide do not go unnoticed.

The interlocutors discussed issues of decentralized cooperation, interaction in science and education and a number of other directions.

President Sargsyan also left a note in the guest book.  He awarded Gérard Collomb with a Order of Honor for his significant contribution to the reinforcement and development of Armenian-French ties.

The Mayor of Lyon hosted an official dinner in honor of President Sargsyan.

German Bundestag Members Awarded by Armenian Parliament

YEREVAN—On Monday, August 29, Armenia’s National Assembly Speaker Galust Sahakyan received German Bundestag MP and President of the German-Armenian Forum Albert Weiler.

Welcoming the guest, Sahakyan thanked Weiler’s contribution to the furthering and development of interparliamentary and interstate relations between the two countries.

The Head of Parliament evaluated the intensification of cooperation and contacts between Armenia’s National Assembly and the Bundestag. Sahakyan welcomed the German lawmakers’ promotion of regional cooperation, sustainability of peace and stability, formation of atmosphere of confidence in the region. In this context, Sahakyan highlighted Buntestag MPs’ visits to Artsakh.

Sahakyan expressed gratitude to the German Bundestag for adopting the bill on June 2, 2016 condemning the Armenian Genocide. “I am confident that only through recognition and condemnation of these crimes it is possible to prevent them the future,” he said.

Weiler, thankful for the reception, attached importance to his visit to Armenia after the adoption of the bill condemning the Armenian Genocide. Touching upon the bilateral relations, the Bundestag MP emphasized the mutual visits and the deepening of relations between the two countries especially in the economic sphere. Referring to the regional issues, Weiler noted that Germany strives in its turn to do its best for the maintenance of regional peace.

According to the Parliamentary press, Sahakyan expressed confidence that through support by Weiler, the traditional relations between Germany and Armenia will continue and develop.

At the end of the meeting, Sahakyan awarded Weiler an honorary medal for his significant contribution to the strengthening of the Armenian – German relations and advancement of interparliamentary ties.

On the same day, Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian received Weiner.

Nalbandian praised the work of the German-Armenian Forum as well as the high-level cooperation established between the two countries, discussing steps to deepen ties.

During the meeting, Weiner briefed Nalbandian on the current activities and plans of the Forum.

Nalbandian then commended the German Parliament for recognizing the Armenian Genocide in June.

The meeting discussed Armenia-EU relations and the ongoing negotiations on a new legal framework with the European Union.

The Armenian Foreign Minister also briefed the German lawmakers on efforts of Armenia and the OSCE Minsk Group targeted at the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh issue.

Vatican: Armenia ambassador is awarded papal cross of the order

armenian ambassadorYEREVAN. – Armenia’s Ambassador to the Holy See, Mikayel Minasyan, on Wednesday was granted the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Pius IX by Pope Francis.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia informed Armenian News-NEWS.am that during the respective ceremony, which was held on the same day at the Apostolic Palace—the official residence of the Pope—in Vatican City, Archbishop Giovanni Angelo Becciu, the current Substitute of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See, handed the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Pius IX Medal to Ambassador Minasyan.

The Pope’s respective pastoral letter notes that Mikayel Minasyan has merited this Pontifical order as an outstanding proof of officially attesting to the Holy See’s benevolence toward him.

Armenia’s Sargsyan is awarded Gold Medal from Pope Francis

pope-armenian-presidentPresident of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan on Friday met with a delegation led by Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches in the Roman Curia (administrative apparatus of the Holy See).

Catholicos Patriarch of Cilicia of Armenian Catholics, Krikor Bedros XX Gabroyan, also attended the talk.

The President noted that Armenia-Vatican City State diplomatic relations are distinguished by their high-level political discourse, and that the bilateral ties continue to strengthen.

In addition, Sargsyan awarded Cardinal Sandri with the Order of Friendship.

The President also noted that it is hard to overestimate the Holy See’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

The interlocutors also underscored the development of cultural collaboration between Armenia and the Vatican City State.

Cardinal Sandri, for his part, expressed gratitude for the high Armenian award bestowed upon him, and the warm reception.

And the Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches in the Roman Curia, in turn, handed to the President of Armenia the Gold Medal that was awarded to him by Pope Francis.
