Los Angeles Officials to Lead Vigil for Peace in Artsakh

April 11, 2016 By administrator

Vigil at City Hall to call for peace in Artsakh

Vigil at City Hall to call for peace in Artsakh

LOS ANGELES- In response to the recent shelling of Armenian villages in Artsakh (also known Nagorno-Karabakh) by Azerbaijan, Los Angeles Councilmember Paul Krekorian and other elected officials are joining with Armenian-American civic and religious leaders to make a call for peace in the Caucusus region where violence by Azerbaijan’s government has taken dozens of innocent lives in recent days. The vigil comes just days after a protest of 3,000 community members outside Azerbaijan’s consulate in Los Angeles.

The conflict erupted just over a week ago after Azerbaijan killed Armenian civilians and soldiers, in violation of a two-decade old, internationally recognized cease fire. Among the casualties were young children and elderly grandparents in small, rural villages. The conflict is especially sensitive to stability in the region as any additional escalation in violence could spark a wider regional conflict, pulling in Russia and Turkey.

The Community Vigil for Peace in Artsakh will take place on Tuesday April 12 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Los Angeles City Hall (South Lawn), 200 N. Main St., LA 90012.

“This is a critical human rights issue for the Armenian-American community and anyone who cares about peace and justice,” said LA Councilmember Paul Krekorian. “Our own U.S. government is a beacon of hope and democracy in the world and must use its influence and ensure stability in this vital region. Elected officials and community organizations are gathering to urge peace and to speak out on behalf of the victims of this inexcusable violence.”

Expected to attend the event are LA City Councilmembers Paul Krekorian, Herb Wesson Jr., Nury Martinez, Mitch O’Farrell and David Ryu; LA County Supervisor Mike Antonovich, Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian, Mayor Eric Garcetti, Armenian National Committee of America – Western Region, Armenian Assembly Western District; and religious leaders Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Archbishop Mikael Mouradian, Rev. Berdj Djambazian, along with many hundreds of community members, city employees and others.

Twenty five years ago, the people of Artsakh declared independence from Azerbaijan. Their demand for self-determination in their historic homeland was met with Azeri pogroms and a devastating war in the Caucasus region. Against all odds, these people defeated the much larger and better armed Azerbaijani forces and established a free, independent and democratic Republic of Artsakh, following in the tradition of the revolutionary founders of the United States of America.

Since the ceasefire in 1994, Artsakh has flourished, despite constant threats and violent provocations by Azerbaijan. Last week, Azerbaijan broke ceasefire with unprovoked full scale military attacks on the people of Artsakh, just days after the U.S. government emphasized to Azerbaijan’s president the importance of continuing to seek a permanent peace.

The vigil will promote peace in the region and urge the U.S. government to speak out against Azerbaijan’s military aggression.

SYDNEY (ANC Australia)—Australian Member of Parliament John Alexander welcomed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic parliamentarian Davit Ishkhanyan to Australia’s Parliament while on a visit with a delegation as part of the Armenian National Committee of Australia’s Advocacy Week.

Alexander mentioned the 24th anniversary of Artsakh’s independence, and said that “with its significant majority of ethnic Armenians, it enjoys a democratic system of government and a commitment to human rights and free press that lies in stark contrast to its closest neighbor, Azerbaijan.”

Alexander, the Member for Bennelong, Australia, also acknowledged Kaylar Michaelian, the newly-appointed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic representative to Australia, who was also part of the delegation.

He said: “Earlier today, I was fortunate to meet with a delegation including representatives from the Armenian National Committee and Mr. Kaylar Michaelian, a former principal of Galstaun College, who has recently been appointed as the new permanent representative of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh to Australia.”

“With them was Mr. Davit Ishkhanyan, a member of the parliament from Nagorno-Karabakh, which is also known as Artsakh.”

Alexander added: “This republic recently celebrated 24 years of independence.”

The ANC Australia-led delegation, accompanied by Ishkhanyan and Michaelian, met with over 25 members of parliament over two days in Canberra, and raised awareness for the security of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as advocating for its Independence to be recognized.

The Full Statement of Mr ALEXANDER (Bennelong) (13:37):

Culturally diverse, Bennelong is the proud home of our nation’s largest community of Armenian-Australians. This community may be comparatively small, but the positive contribution that they make is significant. From political representation—such as the New South Wales Treasurer, Gladys Berejiklian, and Ryde councillors Artin Etmekdjian and Sarkis Yedelian—through to local restaurant owners, accountants, lawyers and even my excellent car mechanic, the gentle, smart and honest character traits shared by so many Armenian-Australians pervades the Bennelong community.

Earlier today, I was fortunate to meet with a delegation including representatives from the Armenian National Committee and Mr. Kaylar Michaelian, a former principal of Galstaun College, who has recently been appointed as the new permanent representative of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh to Australia. With them was Mr. Davit Ishkhanyan, a member of the parliament from Nagorno-Karabakh, which is also known as Artsakh.

This republic recently celebrated 24 years of independence. With its significant majority of ethnic Armenians, it enjoys a democratic system of government and a commitment to human rights and free press that lies in stark contrast to its closest neighbor, Azerbaijan. I join many in hoping that a peaceful resolution can be found to the conflict in that region, and, on behalf of my constituents in Bennelong, I welcome Mr. Ishkhanyan to our parliament. Welcome.

Armenia Fund’s ‘Our Home’ Campaign to Construct Homes in Artsakh

November 9, 2015 By administrator

This year’s Armenia Fund Telethon to promote “Our Home” campaign

This year’s Armenia Fund Telethon to promote “Our Home” campaign

This year’s Armenia Fund Telethon, which will air on November 26—Thanksgiving Day—will promote a campaign called “Our Home,” which will be the construction of single family homes for families in Artsakh who have 5 children or more and lack adequate housing. There are already 466 families identified in Artsakh who fit the criteria and 211 are known to live in unacceptable housing conditions.

Having become a Thanksgiving Day tradition for Armenians around the world, the Telethon will air from Los Angeles and be broadcast from coast to coast and internationally on cable and satellite television as well as online: www.ArmeniaFund.org

“This is truly a humanitarian project and we have received a great deal of positive feedback from our donors. It is not easy to raise 5 or more children even in the United States, let alone Artsakh. We all should pitch in to help the parents who are raising the next generation of Armenia’s scientists, doctors, statesmen and artists by providing them adequate housing. These are parents who work hard, who do their absolute best to provide for their children, but, unfortunately, they cannot save enough money to build a home big enough for their children,” explained Antranik Baghdassarian, President of Armenia Fund, Inc.

The homes that Armenia Fund constructs will have land plots of 10,000 sq. ft. each, where the families can grow fruits and vegetables. Armenia Fund will provide furniture for every room in the house as well as provide household appliances, including water heaters, refrigerators, washers, stoves and vacuum cleaners.

“Coming off the heels of the 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, we reflect not only on our survival but our future – our children, the beneficiaries of this year’s Telethon’s target project. I am glad we are combining our efforts with our Western Region affiliate this year. It projects unity and highlights the importance of this year’s project. By streamlining our efforts and joining our unique talents and resources, we will better serve Armenia and Artsakh by reducing costs and operational expenses, thus allowing more funds to be allocated for projects. We call on all Armenians in the United States and around the world to watch the Telethon and donate generously for this noble program,” stated Khoren Bandazian, President of Armenia Fund USA, the Eastern Region affiliate of Hayastan All-Armenian Fund.

According to the program, priority will be given to low income families, as well as the families of active duty officers of the armed forces, families of veterans of the Artsakh Liberation War and to the survivors of soldiers who lost their lives defending Artsakh.

“This is a great partnership benefiting the children of Artsakh. Their parents do the heavy-lifting of providing for the children through their hard work, the government of Artsakh does its part by providing subsidies and allowances for every child, and we will build them new beautiful homes. The Fund will only be able to do this with the support of our donors, who we cannot thank enough for their generosity and caring. Today, when we hear about Azerbaijan’s unprecedented aggression against the peaceful population of Artsakh, it is important for all of us to send a powerful message to our brothers and sisters that our support for Artsakh is stronger than ever,” explains Ara Vardanyan, the Executive Director of Hayastan All-Armenian Fund, Yerevan.

The Telethon airs for 12 hours on Thanksgiving Day, November 26 beginning at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.
