NEW YORK–An enthusiastic crowd of Armenia Tree Project (ATP) and Paros Foundation supporters gathered at the popular Almayass Restaurant in New York City in November to kick off a strategic partnership. The two organizations are teaming up to improve the primary school in Rind, a village in Armenia’s southern wine region of Vayots Dzor.

“The central element of this new partnership is capitalizing on the strengths of the two organizations,” explains ATP Executive Director Jeanmarie Papelian. “Paros has a proven expertise in renovating schools and creating a clean, healthy atmosphere for students to learn and grow. ATP will provide environmental education to the students and create new green spaces around the school for the benefit of the children.”

The sold out benefit event in New York created a terrific environment for socializing and featured the beautiful voice of Hooshere, who performed and was one of the lead organizers. Guests were able to bid on several silent auction items that were donated to benefit the Rind school including items from Michael Aram, Eileen Karakashian, Tufenkian Artisan Carpets, Zorah Wines, World’s First Wines, and Simon Ardem.

The event was attended by ATP founder Carolyn Mugar and Paros founder Roger Strauch. “On behalf of the Paros Foundation and ATP, we would like to thank the organizing committee comprised of Anahid Ugurlayan, Hooshere Bezdikian, Lisa Sarajian, and Nicole Vartanian for making this event such a huge success,” emphasized Mr. Strauch. “We’re excited about this partnership and hope this project is the first of many in Armenia. The hard work and dedication shown by our committee was instrumental in the success of the event and very much appreciated.”

This project will bring about positive improvements for the more than 1,700 people that call Rind their home. Armenia’s ambassador to the United Nations Zohrab Mnatsakanian delivered a moving appeal, urging people to give the kids of Rind Village a chance to excel. “Look at their faces. Look at their confidence,” he exclaimed while pointing to a photo of them in classroom. “Let’s support these organizations to give these kids the opportunity to do great things!”

As a result of the generous support of the guests, Paros will completely renovate and furnish the school’s kitchen and cafeteria, which will allow the school to prepare hot meals for the children. ATP is planting more than 550 trees and shrubs at the site, and introducing its “Plant an Idea, Plant a Tree” environmental education curriculum at the school. The tree planting was initiated the day after the New York benefit event, with the remainder of the work scheduled for 2018.

The two organizations will report on the progress of this project as it proceeds in the coming months. To learn more or to support either organization, please visit www.armeniatree.org or www.parosfoundation.org.

Armenia successfully meets economic growth targets a 7.7% economic growth– debate

February 5, 2018 By administrator

The economic growth targets, outlined in the political parties’ pre-election platforms, have been by and large met in Armenia over the past year to secure a tangible progress, according to politicians.

In a speech at a public debate entitled “Governing Political Parties’ Promises and the Reality: What was Promised and What is Being Done?”, the secretary of the ruling Republican faction in parliament, Gagik Melikyan, addressed particularly their coalition program with the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaksutyun (ARF-D), highlighting the faster paces of progress compared to the other countries in the region.

“In 2017, we managed to secure a 7.7% economic growth, as well as a higher gross domestic product, and an economic activity above 12%. I find it really very important as [such a result] is not easily achievable, especially in a region like ours,” he said.

According to Suren Parsyan, a top representative of the ARF-D Development and Economic Research Center, the coalition plan was based largely upon the two parties’ pre-election programs and “progressive ideas and opinions proposed by the society”.

“We particularly [proposed a plan] for securing a 5% annual economic growth. And we have been able to realize that objective, increasing the exports to 40% against the GDP. So our export growth is 25.2% this year; we additionally intend to increase the salaries by 25%, considering specific steps and making specific calculations for that purpose,” he added.

Gagik Makaryan, the president of the Republican Union of Employers, also admitted the existing positive dynamics.

“Fact-based analyses, conducted among hundreds of employers since 2016, revealed seven basic obstacles, including specifically the shadow [income] and poor governance, corruption and unequal competition,” he said, stressing further the importance of confidence-building as the most important precondition to future progress.

Zorik Gharibian’s Open Letter to Eduardo Eurnekian “David vs Goliath” KARAS WINE

January 31, 2018 By administrator

Zorik Gharibian’s VS Eduardo Eurnekian 2

Zorik Gharibian’s VS Eduardo Eurnekian

report about the dispute between Karas Wines and Zorah brands in December 2017.

Banks.am has received an open letter from Zorah founder Zorik Gharibyan to Karas Wines founder Eduardo Eurnekian, which we present below. We are ready to publish the response from Eduardo Eurnekian or his representatives as well.

“Dear Mr Eurnekian,

We are both diasporan Armenians who are investing in reinstating Armenia’s ancient wine culture in an attempt to create a bright and prosperous future for successive winemaking generations of our young country as well as the rightful recognition, on a world stage, of Armenia as one of the cradles of Vine and Wine.

KARAS wines is undoubtedly one of the largest of investments in this field. Indeed, KARAS wines is not your only investment. Your dedication to the rebirth of your ancestral homeland has made you invest in Armenia’s future in fields as diverse as agriculture, banking and aviation. For your commitment you were recently awarded the highest of our country’s honours by our President who bestowed upon you the title of “National Hero of Armenia” handing out the prestigious “Order of Motherland” for your services aimed at the “development and prosperity” of the country.

Are you therefore aware, Mr Eurnekian, that your founded company, KARAS wines, has taken a completely opposite stance to that of encouraging “development and prosperity” in Armenia’s winemaking by absurdly demanding exclusive brand usage of the word “KARAS”. In so doing,  KARAS wines is wanting to prohibit all Armenian winemakers, who work with these vessels, the right to use the word “KARAS” on their labels and is wishing to monopolise, entirely for its own benefit, what is historically Armenia’s most ancient and traditional winemaking vessel.

Perhaps it is worth mentioning that the history of winemaking in the ‘KARAS’ is so old that it merges with the history of humanity itself. Six thousand years ago in the highlands of Armenia wine was being fermented in the ‘KARAS’, as testifies the archaeological site of Areni-1 Cave. Three thousand years ago, our ancestors, the Urartians, were fermenting wine in huge KARASSES as testifies the archaeological site of Karmir Blur. The cellars of our medieval churches are full of KARASSES in which wines were made and fermented. Before the Soviet era there were entire villages dedicated to the art of ‘KARAS’ production, a craft which was passed from one generation to the next. The ‘KARAS’ have a deep-rooted, profound and intimate relationship with Armenia’s winemaking history and are undoubtedly part of Armenia’s cultural heritage.

It is, therefore, absolutely preposterous that a corporation, which is not involved in the rebirth of winemaking in the ‘KARAS’ and does not ferment or age one single drop of its production in these vessels, hold ransom the whole industry by pretending exclusive rights to its word usage. This creates not only false illusions for those who consume KARAS wines but, also, deprives present and future generations of Armenian winemakers the right to use the word on their labels to express an ancient and authentic Armenian wine-making method . This behaviour from KARAS wines shows complete disrespect for one’s history as well as short sightedness and typical corporate arrogance.

The Georgians have elevated their equivalent of ‘KARAS’ the Qvevri to UNESCO Intangible Heritage of Humanity status. The Portuguese have created a DOP for the production of their wines in Thala (KARAS in Portuguese) while countries like Italy are now investing heavily in the rebirth of amphorae made wines, their heritage from Roman times.

Armenian winemakers of today and tomorrow, on the other hand, will have to stand on international and domestic platforms and talk of Armenia’s 6000 year winemaking history using words such as Amphorae, Qvevri or Thala and explain that our endemic word ‘KARAS’ was sold to the highest bidder, a powerful corporation, for personal promotion and brand usage.

The ‘KARAS’ are part of the cultural legacy of this country and belong to all its people so WHY does KARAS wines feel entitled to have exclusive rights for personal brand usage? WHAT gives it the right to do so? Is it its selfish corporate might? Or does ‘KARAS wines’ believe in some kind of superior right where no one or nothing can claim against its wishes?

This is a senseless endeavour. Development and prosperity in Armenia’s winemaking can ONLY come with unity, farsightedness, collective cooperation and most importantly knowledge and respect for one’s heritage. What KARAS wines will achieve with this self-centred action is only divide and discord with the only great looser being the future development of Armenia’s wine industry itself.

The stance of KARAS wines is clear. What, I ask, is your personal position? Divide and discord or strength in Unity?”

It is now the best for doing business in Armenia – Karen Karapetyan’s interview with RIA Novosti

January 22, 2018 By administrator

Armenia’s prime minister voiced the country’s intention for boosting the investments policies 2018, considering the period the most favorable for attracting foreign businesses and entrepreneurs.

In an interview with RIA  Novosti, Karen Karpaetyan elaborated also on the government plans for making the businesss atmosphere  more investment friendly, and the projects expected to attract Russian companies (as part of a road map proposed by the Investors Club of Armenia).

The premier further addressed a recently announced energy investment project worth over $1 billion (to be implemented under the joint funding of Tashir Group and the Electric Networks of Armenia) and major infrastructure programs, including the North-South highway construction and the development of a residential and hotel district in capital Yerrevan.  He also spoke of the Gyumri development plan, particularly the renovation of the historical-architectural reserve in the second largest city.

“Organic and greenhouse agriculture is becoming increasingly widespread in Armenia against the high demand for the produce. Armenia enjoys a worldwide reputation in the re-procession and conservation of fruit and vegetable, and production of dried fruit and juices. Also, the water and alcoholic beverages here serve as unique kind of visiting card,” Karapetyan added.

The premier said they expect the outcomes to be visible only in the course of time to open up a new phase of socio-economic reforms and “solidify Armenia’s image on the international arena as a country fit for living, having a rest and doing business.”

“Making the country maximum business-friendly is among our key objectives; therefore I can give my assurances that this period of time is the best for doing business in Armenia,” he added.

Russia risking its ties with Armenia amid new military supplies to Azerbaijan – Styopa Safaryan

January 22, 2018 By administrator

Russia’s attitude to Armenia is just unacceptable as it continues supplying weapons to Azerbaijan in what is seen to further damage the bilateral relations. Kremlin should acknowledge the criticism over its policy will grow in Armenia over the time, Styopa Safaryan, founder of the Armenian Institute of International and Security Affairs (AIISA) told Panorama.am in an interview, commenting on a new batch of Russian military equipment delivered to Azerbaijan.

“It was especially right after the April war, when not only relations between Russia and Armenia were strained but the Russian military-technical cooperation with Azerbaijan was put on hold. It was no coincidence, Russian Deputy PM Dmitry Rogozin visited Baku weeks ago. The resumption of the military supplies was undoubtedly in the agenda of bilateral talks. I consider this extremely dangerous,” Safaryan said.

“Russia seems seeking a goal to lose all possible friends, at least it has chosen the route to that end. Armenia is one of the few countries that has always maintained solidarity with Russia in the foreign affairs – often to the detriment of own interest,” Safaryan added.

The political analyst recalled Armenia’s acknowledgment of Crimea as part of Russia, that endangered relations with Ukraine, saying: “We made that decision considering Russia’s role in our foreign policy and allied relations. In contrast, Russia’s actions appear unthankful.”
