July 2, 2016 By administrator

armenia france genocideThe National Assembly (NA) of France adopted the amendments proposed to the bill on “Equality and citizenship”, which President François Hollande had also promised to make.

The amendments propose to establish 45,000 euro penalty for denying the crimes against humanity, 20Minutes writes. In fact, the document specifically mentions about criminalizing the Armenian Genocide denial.

The bill will now be directed for adoption by Senate.

The previous law criminalizing the Armenian Genocide denial in France was blocked by the country’s Constitutional Court, following which François Hollande initiated another bill.

The UN Security Council has passed a resolution strengthening legal measures against those doing business with terrorist groups. It targets mainly Islamic State militants (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

The resolution is the result of a joint effort by Russia and the US, which are both leading anti-IS campaigns in Syria.

It stems from a UNSC action taken in February against illegal trafficking of antiquities from Syria, which threatened sanctions on anyone buying oil from IS or the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Nusra Front and urged that kidnap ransoms not be paid.

Australian City of Ryde adopts motion on Armenian Genocide centenary

April 17, 2015 By administrator

190801The City of Ryde adopted this week a unanimous motion dedicated to the centenary of the Armenian Genocide, reported the Armenian National Committee of Australia.

The motion, which comes 10 years after the City of Ryde became the first local council in Australia to recognize the events of 1915 to 1923 as Armenian Genocide, took the measure to honor the memory of the 1.5 million victims of this crime in its Centenary year.

The motion, just like the one 10 years ago, was introduced by Councillor Sarkis Yedelian before a packed gallery in the Council chambers. Numerous members of the Ryde-Armenian community spoke at the session on the importance of adopting such a motion.

This motion follows on from an unprecedented level of media coverage in Australia on the Armenian Genocide. The Australian, the Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian Financial Review, SBS TV and ABC TV all extensively reported on the Armenian Genocide.

Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of Australia, Vache Kahramanian welcome the passing of motion by the City of Ryde.

“The City of Ryde has once again demonstrated its strong moral and principled stance on the Armenian Genocide,” Kahramanian said. “I thank Councillor Yedelian and all councillors for their steadfast and unwavering support, especially in this centenary year.”

The motion, which was adopted reads:

Whereas 2015 marks the 10th anniversary of the City of Ryde passing a motion recognizing the events of 1915-1923 as the Armenian Genocide, this Council joins with the Armenian-Australian community in marking the centenary of the Armenian Genocide by resolving to:

(a) honor the memory of the innocent men, women and children who fell victim to the first modern genocide;

(b) condemn the genocide of the Armenians; and all other acts of genocide as the ultimate act of racial, religious and cultural intolerance;

(c) recognize the importance of remembering and learning from such dark chapters in human history to ensure that such crimes against humanity are not allowed to be repeated;

(d) condemn and prevents all attempts to use the passage of time to deny or distort the historical truth of the genocide of the Armenians and other acts of genocide committed during this century;

(e) recall the testimonies of Australian WWI POWs who lay witness to the genocide of the Armenians;

(f) acknowledge the significant humanitarian contribution made by the people of Australia to the victims and survivors of the Armenian Genocide; and

(g) call on the Commonwealth of Australia to recognize and condemn all genocides including the Armenian Genocide.

US Senate Committee adopts Armenian Genocide resolution

April 10, 2014 By administrator

April 10, 2014 | 22:48

WASHINGTON. – For the first time in nearly a quarter century, a U.S. Senate committee Thursday adopted an Armenian Genocide Resolution, calling upon the Senate to commemorate this crime and encouraging the 203816President to ensure that America’s foreign policy reflects and reinforces the lessons, documented in the U.S. record, of the still-unpunished genocide, reported the Armenian National Committee of America.

“Today’s vote affirms America’s commitment to truth, deals a serious setback to Turkey’s campaign of genocide denial, and sends a clear message to President Obama that he must end his Administration’s complicity in Ankara’s cover-up of this crime,” said Aram Hamparian, Executive Director of the ANCA. “We thank Chairman Menendez for his powerful leadership and express our thanks to each of the Senators who cast their votes for this human rights measure.”

With a vote of 12 to 5, the Committee voted to condemn and commemorate the Armenian Genocide.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez (D-NJ) spearheaded the effort to have this influential foreign policy panel speak clearly regarding the Ottoman Turkish Government’s centrally planned and systematically carried out campaign of genocide from 1915-1923, which resulted in the deaths of over 1.5 million men, women and children.

Senator Menendez announced the vote at the Armenian Genocide Observance on Capitol Hill yesterday evening, where he told his colleagues and attendees, “To me, to all men and women of good will, I would think there is a simple statement – genocide is genocide, and you cannot call it anything else but that and you need to have a recognition of that. Next year when we mark a century – a hundred years ago that the Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turkey, it seems to me that with most of the survivors gone – but with a few left – it is incredibly important for us to lead globally at this time.”
