Yerevan: Turkish activist dedicates his speech to Zabel Yesayan’s memory

April 23, 2016 By administrator

f571b4f2393173_571b4f23931af.thumbTurkish human rights activist and scientist Sait Cetinoglu dedicated his speech during the Second Global Forum against the Crime of Genocide to famous Armenian novelist, Zabel Yesayan’s memory.

It should be noted that Yesayan was the only woman on the list of Armenian intellectuals targeted for arrest and deportation by the Ottoman Young Turk government on April 24, 1915. She was able to evade arrest and flee to Bulgaria and then to the Caucasus, where she worked with refugees documenting their eyewitness accounts of atrocities that had taken place during the Armenian Genocide.

Cetinoglu made his speech during the first session of the forum concerning Genocide and deportation.
The activist also noted that the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan censored Turkish politician’s book on the Armenian Genocide.

According to Cetinoglu, many Turkish politicians and writers on the Genocide have told times again how it all happened, yet ‘it was Armenians that felt the pain, it was Armenians that have suffered the tragedy’.

“Sevan, an Armenian in Turkey is charged with 25 years of imprisonment for illegal construction. Most of the construction in the country is illegal, yet it is Sevan Nshanyan who has been charged with 25 years of imprisonment. He has been imprisoned for a book against Islam and Turkish authorities. This is imbalance,” Cetinoglu stated.

According to him, to admit and condemn the Armenian Genocide, everyone in Turkey should acknowledge the collective responsibility for the Genocide and then ask for forgiveness.

“A ‘Never Again’ memorial should be built and the compensation activities should be launched,” added Cetinoglu.

George Clooney on the Armenian Genocide: One cannot deny what happened

April 23, 2016 By administrator

f571b3731ba440_571b3731ba47d.thumbCo-Chair of the Aurora Prize George Clooney who is also present at the Second Global Forum against the Crime of Genocide, happening at Karen Demirchyan Complex thanked Ruben Vardayan for inviting him.

“This is my first visit to Armenia. I’m really excited to be here and participate in this event,” said Clooney.
Associate editor for The Washington Post, David Ignatius asked Clooney what made him come to Armenia and attend the Global Forum against the Crime of Genocide.

Clooney said that he was born in a time when people had to fight for their rights, and he was brought up on those principles. He also said that after reading about the Darfur Genocide, he has decided to use his fame to help those who suffered through the horrors of genocide.

According to Clooney, considering genocides massacres is wrong but one needs a long time to acknowledge it.
“It took a long and hard battle to finally call the things by their names. Everything is difficult, but [it happens] in time. You cannot deny what happened. You cannot bring back an entire race. [Destroying] people’s culture is genocide,” Clooney added.

He also noted that Vardan, Ruben and Nubar’s initiative aims at two things, to look back and never forget what happened, because that is part of not only Armenian but also world history, and to look ahead.

To remind, the Aurora Prize hosts the Aurora Dialogues – a series of insightful discussions between leading humanitarians, academics, philanthropists and media experts on some of today’s most pressing global challenges held within the scopes and under the patronage of the Second Global Forum against the Crime of Genocide.

The Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity will be granted annually to an individual whose actions have had an exceptional impact on preserving human life and advancing humanitarian causes.

The Aurora Prize Laureate will be honored with a US $100,000 grant. In addition, that individual will have the unique opportunity to continue the cycle of giving by nominating organizations that inspired their work to receive a US $1,000,000 award.

The Aurora Prize will be awarded annually on April 24 in Yerevan, Armenia.

Genocide 101’ Benefit Concert Set for Sunday after Rally For Justice

April 23, 2016 By administrator

Genocide-101-Poster-GEN-20160313On Sunday, April 24, after the Rally For Justice at the Turkish Consulate in Los Angeles, community members and artists will come together to raise awareness about genocide prevention and education through the “Genocide 101” benefit concert. Recently, Asbarez caught of with concern organizer and musician Antranig Kzirian, who talked about concert in an email.

Asbarez: What is Genocide 101?

ANTRANIG KZIRIAN.: This concert embodies the enduring nature of the Armenian spirit. Equal parts art, activism and altruism. In harmony with these broad ideas, Genocide 101, at its core, is an artistic social justice fundraising concert dedicated to two primary objectives:

  1. raising awareness of and commemorating the 101st Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide through a celebration of the survival, perseverance and flourishing of the Armenian Nation and
  2. providing an outlet for artists and the community to support worthwhile, needy causes that address areas of concern that impact and advance the Armenian Cause.

The event is designed to provide a family oriented atmosphere where the community can come together to enjoy the creativity and artistic interpretations of talented local artists. We are very fortunate here in Los Angeles to have such a diverse array of musicians and performers. What better way to contribute to the Armenian Cause then to feature artists who deliver an uplifting message of how our community and people have persevered and prospered after enduring such hardship?

The concert will take place on Sunday, April 24, 2016, beginning at 6 pm at Beyond the Stars Palace in Glendale, located at 417 N Brand Blvd, Glendale, CA 91203. Tickets are available through http://www.itsmyseat.com/genocide101

Given the importance of April 24, we elected to schedule this year’s show to begin at 6 pm to allow for everyone to attend the “Rally for Justice” community wide protest at the Turkish Consulate which begins at 1 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m., with the first performance beginning at 6:30 pm.

Asbarez: What is the line up of the concert?

A.K.: There is an exciting lineup of artists set to perform this year. We have two tremendous male vocalists in Kevork Artinian and Heibert Sarian. If you have not heard them yet this is your chance. String Harmonies will be offering up their innovative style of virtuosic and high energy traditional music. Armenian Public Radio is a prominent acoustic folk trio reimagining classic selections. Delayed is a jazz and electronica based fusion project featuring the cello. Community favorite Greg Hosharian will perform with his trio, and also he will accompany female vocalist extraordinaire Alene Arustamian. Alique and Krista from Green Kard will round out the evening with their soulful blend of acoustic folk, blues, soft rock and Armenian tunes. DJ HyeFx will spin throughout the evening during breaks between artists, and AYF Representative Aram Manoukian will serve as Master of Ceremonies and deliver the evening’s inspiring message of taking action to make a difference.

Asbarez: How have the artists and organizers worked with the community?

A.K.: We are very pleased to enjoy the support, participation and involvement of various organizations representing a broad cross section of the community here in Southern California. As an AYF alumnus I am intimately aware of how impactful its programs can be for our youth both here and abroad. As our youth is such an integral part of our future, that is why AYF Youth Corps is one of the recipients of our concerts proceeds. We also are happy to support other worthwhile and needy causes, such as Ferrahian, a community pillar and educational institution which has helped shape generations of local Armenians. Additionally, with the recent flare up of hostilities in Artsakh, we are proud to include the Paros Foundation as one of our recipients for funding. Offering a lending hand to the families of fallen soldiers and civilian casualties takes on added significance during these difficult times. Finally, the ANC is involved with raising awareness about the show and these notable causes. We would be remiss if we did not acknowledge our hard working and dedicated artists and organizing committee, who all perform and participate gratis volunteering their time and efforts to help make the show a success. All concert proceeds, in their entirety, will be donated to the above causes.

Asbarez: How do you believe this concert and music help advance our cause and help us make a statement on April 24?

A.K.: It is a call to “arms” so speak. Not in the literal sense, but as embodying a unification of purpose. Art is a unique and powerful medium through which messages can be communicated to society. Music resonates with our minds, our souls and our sense of perception. Music can elicit particular emotions and evoke contemplation at the deepest levels of our thought process to persuade us to think about a topic or dynamic in the world around us. Simply put, music can serve as a catalyst and artistic form of advocacy and support for a cause. The history of art as a force with which to be reckoned is will documented. There is a great convergence between art and politics – the Russian Tsars feared that “anything outstanding or original in the way of creative thought was a jarring note and a stride toward revolution” – others like famed theorist Boris Groys stated that “Art has its own power in the world, and is as much a force in the power play of global politics today as it once was in the arena of cold war politics”.

I always viewed this convergence as involving interesting and creative ways to supplement and make policy more effective – whether through music, poetry, film, etc. When you add all that up, it’s a great fit with our two main objectives of raising awareness of April 24 and contributing funds to needy charitable causes.

Asbarez: What needs to take place for this concert to be successful and have an effective impact and what for you is the best outcome?

A.K.: In some ways, it is already a success by virtue of the support we have received thus far. Everyone remains very grateful for the community and organizations that back this event. We will feel even more fulfilled as long as we can maximize attendance to help these causes as much as possible, in addition to cultivating an environment where attendees can enjoy the concert and experience a sense of inspiration and passion to do something positive for the Armenian Cause in one way or another. The best outcome would be an entertaining and enjoyable evening of good music and a strong sense of purpose knowing we are helping those in need through our efforts.

Canada’s Trudeau Stays True to Genocide Recognition

April 23, 2016 By administrator

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

OTTAWA—In his inaugural year in office, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau released a statement commemorating the 101st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. In a statement dated April 24, 2016 which he shared with the Armenian National Committee of Canada (ANCC), Prime Minister Trudeau recalls resolutions of both the Senate and the House of Commons recognizing the Armenian Genocide and states that “[Canadians] preserve the memory of those who lost their lives, and those who suffered, during this genocide and pay our deepest respects to their descendants, including those who now call Canada home.”

“We are encouraged to see that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is holding true to Canada’s commitment to condemn acts of genocide, including the Armenian Genocide,” stated ANCC President Dr. Girair Basmadjian. “While the Prime Minister’s message reaffirms the Canadian government’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the need to prevent future genocides, it fails to condemn successive Turkish governments that perpetrated the Armenian Genocide between 1915 and 1923, nor does it condemn the ongoing denial campaign by the Republic of Turkey,” concluded Basmadjian.

The ANCC believes firmly that “Canada’s back” and as a world leader in promoting and protecting human rights and democratic values in other states should help Turkey acknowledge its past by condemning all forms of denial. The ANCC and the Armenians who have chosen Canada as home will continue to work with our government and elected representatives throughout Canada to ensure that future statements include condemnation of any denial by successive Turkish governments.

On the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the Canadian Parliament designated April as Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation and Prevention Month and April 24 as Armenian Genocide Memorial Day. On the 101st anniversary, the Prime Minister’s statement is an important part of the Canadian government’s commitment to remember and condemn past genocides and work to prevent future genocides.

The ANCC is the largest and the most influential Armenian-Canadian grassroots human rights organization. Working in coordination with a network of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout Canada and affiliated organizations around the world, the ANCC actively advances the concerns of the Armenian-Canadian community on a broad range of issues and works to eliminate abuses of human rights throughout Canada and the world.

Sargsyan: What would you say of country whose script is not much different from that of Islamic State?

April 23, 2016 By administrator

Sargysian defaultYEREVAN. – What would you say of a country, a fully-fledged subject of international law, a member of the UN, Council of Europe and various other structures, a signatory of the humanitarian conventions, whose script is not much different from that of the Islamic State?

President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan on Saturday asked the abovementioned in his opening address at the second Global Forum Against the Crime of Genocide, which has kicked off in capital city Yerevan.

“As recent crises in the Middle East have demonstrated, nowadays the issue of genocide prevention remains urgent and topical,” he stated and continued. “Lately, the world has been watching with repulsion how the terrorists of the Islamic State have been torturing, beheading and mutilating innocent people, including women, children, and elderly people. The world is shocked with the barbarities that are carried out by a gang of thugs, who can hardly be called to justice and can be fought against barely with missiles.

“Nevertheless, if the thugs that carry out atrocities are fought with missiles, a question comes up: what kind of responsibility should bear a State, a subject of international law, for condoning and carrying out similar crimes? What would you say of a country, a fully-fledged subject of international law, a member of the UN, Council of Europe and various other structures, a signatory of the humanitarian conventions, whose script is not much different from that of the Islamic State?

“Just a few weeks ago, during the large-scale offensive unleashed by Azerbaijan against Nagorno Karabakh, Azeri soldiers were not content with just shooting their arms: they mutilated elderly people, Armenian soldiers, decapitated them and cut off their ears and presented those actions in the social networks as a manifestation of national heroism. It was all evidently encouraged by the Azerbaijani authorities. Is not it bizarre that a country that pursues such barbaric policy and violates all the norms of civilized conduct, these days is going to host a conference under the rubric of ‘Alliance of Civilizations?’ Is this an approach to be tolerated? We must get to the point, when a display of such hatred shall not be tolerated, when any government shall refrain from such conduct mindful that it may be hold responsible for it.

“We as the international community must swiftly and resolutely eradicate all such instances of genocidal conduct wherever they should occur, as it was done some days ago by the leadership and public of Sweden with regard to the hate speech directed against Armenians by the Turkish nationalist Barbaros Leylani. This requires our concerted effort, perhaps even subordination of geopolitical interests, ability to voice strict and targeted condemnation. Unless we are able to nip such conduct in the bud, we will have to deal with the elimination of their various and unpredictable consequences; we will continue to face various crimes nourished by hatred – crimes, among which are the terrorist activities that gain new range and scale on our continent.”

The second Global Forum Against the Crime of Genocide has brought together representatives from governments and parliaments, major international and human rights organizations, renowned experts of international law, members of the media, and numerous other interested persons.

The attendees include renowned actor, filmmaker and philanthropist George Clooney; The Washington Post editor and reviewer David Ignatius; and co-founder of 100 LIVES and the Aurora Prize and president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, businessmen and prominent philanthropists Vartan Gregorian.

Armenia President: Now, we tell everyone to point to the aggressor

April 23, 2016 By administrator

17303_bYEREVAN. – Now, we are telling everyone: Point to the aggressor, so that lessons can be learned, and it will be possible to move on.

President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan on Saturday stated the above-said while interacting with delegates during the intermission at the second Global Forum Against the Crime of Genocide, which is held in capital city Yerevan.

The Presidential Press Office informed Armenian News-NEWS.am that the President spoke with numerous forum participants, and presented Armenia’s view on a variety of matters.

Sargsyan also reflected on the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.

“Yesterday, I received [Russian] Foreign Minister [Sergei] Lavrov, who was in Yerevan on a visit, to whom I presented our position after the situation created as a result of the large-scale attack, which Azerbaijan unleashed [in early April],” the Armenian President specifically noted. “Azerbaijan’s gross violation of the ceasefire agreement in 1994 has pushed the negotiation process somewhere far away.

“We were convinced that this matter could really be resolved based solely on mutual concessions, by way of peace. But today we have a different situation (…), and now, we are telling everyone: Point to the aggressor, so that lessons can be learned, and it will be possible to move on.”
