UK: Corbyn Accuses Turkey, Saudis of Undermining Anti-ISIL Coalition

November 17, 2015 By administrator

British opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has taken aim at the Western-led anti-ISIL strategy, criticizing Turkey and Saudi Arabia’s input in the conflict, while raising questions over the legality of the overall Western approach.

The Labour leader accused Turkey of acting in its own self-interest and undermining the campaign against ISIL through its bombing of Kurdish groups, who have previously been considered to be some of the most effective fighters against ISIL.

Corbyn calling out Turkey and Saudi Arabia for their part in the growth of ISIS on Sky news 👏👏👏

— Conor (@Conjob123) November 16, 2015

Corbyn, who strongly favors a political solution to the conflict, also questioned whether some Saudi organizations were involved in the funding and supporting of ISIL through the supply of weapons and sales of oil. The Labour leader told Sky News:

“I also think we have to ask some questions about the way in which ISIL has received weapons, has received money, has been able to sell oil, has been able to export it and the role that other countries have played in this. [This includes] the way in which Turkey has been bombing Kurdish positions on the border and the way in which Saudi Arabia, maybe not at government level, but certainly at aid-level, has been providing support to ISIL.”

At the End We’ll Need a Political Solution’

Instead of boosting military efforts, Corbyn called for greater diplomatic efforts to improve the political situation in Syria.

“In the long run there has to be a much wider political settlement in the whole region and in the Middle East, otherwise we’re going to get more of this as time goes on,” he said.

“At the end of the day, all wars have to end by a political discussion and political solution to it.”

Following the Paris terrorist attacks and France’s decision to increase its bombing campaign on the ISIL stronghold of Raqqa, Corbyn said he was doubtful the attacks alone would bring about a solution.

“I don’t think that bombing is necessarily going to bring about the solution that they believe it might.”

“There’s going to be civilian casualties from the bombing of Raqqa,” he added, noting that a combined international diplomatic approach involving the West, Russia and other regional powers would be the most effective way of coming to a resolution in the conflict.

“I think far more hopeful are the talks that took place in Vienna over the weekend, including Russia, the United States, European Union and of course the neighboring countries. I think the solution actually lies in creating some kind of acceptable government in Syria that can in turn then hopefully deal with the problem with ISIS, or ISIL.”

The opposition leader has refused to back British military intervention in Syria, arguing that he would not support such an action without a UN mandate, while he also raised questions over the legality of the UK’s shoot to kill drone program, which has been credited with killing infamous ISIL figure Mohammed Emwazi, also known as Jihadi John.

Conan O’Brien Lands Soap Opera Cameo, Visits Genocide Memorial In Armenia Visit

November 16, 2015 By administrator

canon showConan O’Brien’s trip to Armenia airing Tuesday on his TBS late-night show is a bit of a departure for the host in that he took his assistant Sona to visit her home country for the first time, and they visited the Armenian genocide memorial complex. Conan also once again frightened locals with his botched stab at their native tongue, plus he landed a cameo on an Armenian soap opera, attended the Festival of Bad Ideas, ate something billed as Armenian Viagra, and paid a call on some sheepherders who, he was disappointed to learn, were dressed like bouncers.

Conan announced last month he would become the first American late-night host to film in Armenia. He and TBS are hoping he can re-create some of the press coverage, and ratings, the show achieved last spring when O’Brien shocked the media and made headlines as the first American late-night host to shoot in Cuba in more than 50 years. He also generated larger than usual ratings with his Cuba trip — in April, TBS reported a total of 3.7 million viewers had checked out Conan In Cuba. During the Cuba special, Conan mocked CNN, learned the importance of the Cuban clave beat, wowed a band with his 8th-grade Spanish skills, and filed a report for CNN. Final stats for that trip came out one day after the White House announced President Obama would remove Cuba from the U.S. list of nations that sponsor terrorism as part of Obama’s move to restore diplomatic relations.

Turkey HDP appeals to top election board for cancelation of Nov. 1 election

November 16, 2015 By administrator

233317The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) appealed to the Supreme Election Board (YSK) on Monday to ask for the cancelation of the results of the Nov. 1 general election.

The HDP received fewer votes in the Nov. 1 snap election than in the previous general election held on June 7. Although the party obtained 13 percent of the vote on June 7, its support dropped to 10 percent on Nov. 1, following the renewed conflict between Turkish security forces and the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

After the announcement of the unofficial results, the HDP’s co-chairs said that unfair election conditions and a deliberate policy of polarization by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan explained the drop in support.

The HDP canceled election rallies following two deadly attacks on pro-Kurdish gatherings in July. HDP Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş told reporters on Nov. 1 that “there wasn’t a fair or equal election… We were not able to lead an election campaign. We tried to protect our people against attacks.”

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) won 49 percent of the vote, while the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) secured 25 percent. The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) lost 25 percent of its vote compared to the June 7 election, winning just 12 percent. The HDP won 10 percent, just above the 10-percent threshold to enter Parliament and will now be represented by 59 deputies.
