After breaking a number of campaign promises she made to voters back in 2020, embattled Irvine Mayor Farrah Khan appears to be headed for a tough re-election campaign.

When Khan first ran for Mayor in 2020, the local Irvine Democratic club enthusiastically supported her candidacy with many of the club’s members volunteering their time and donating funds to help Khan. Less than two years later, the same Irvine Democratic activists are refusing to support Khan for re-election in the upcoming 2022 Mayoral race.

With local Democrats fleeing, Khan appears to be teaming up with her Republican Council colleague Anthony Kuo. Kuo and Khan — who are aligned on all of the major issues facing our City — have been out in the community over the past few months, posting “selfies” on their social media accounts. According to previous supporters, Khan’s list of broken promises includes Climate Action Plan. In June 2021, Mayor Khan and her appointed Vice Mayor Kuo instructed City staff to pay a consulting firm $450,000 to draft a Climate Action Plan. It’s now been 14 months and the Council has not received a single update from the high-priced consulting firm.

Orange County Power Authority (OCPA). In 2020, Khan boasted in her campaign for Mayor that she had established OCPA — promising voters that they would receive cleaner electricity at lower rates. However, the Orange County Grand Jury’s recent investigation revealed that OCPA is rife with cronyism, incompetence, and lack of transparency. This year, every Irvine ratepayer is being forced to switch from their current provider of electricity Southern California Edison (SCE) and automatically enrolled in the new OCPA plan at a higher cost for the same 100% renewable energy tier that SCE offers.All American Asphalt Plant. Mayor Khan — joined again by her appointed Vice Mayor Kuo — wasted nearly two years falsely telling residents that there was nothing the City could do to prevent Irvine’s largest industrial polluter from emitting hundreds of pounds of airborne human carcinogens every year.

Veterans Memorial Park. In 2020, Khan promised Irvine voters that if she became Mayor, she would immediately move forward in building the long-promised Great Park Veterans Memorial Park & Cemetery. However, as soon as she took office, Khan abandoned all plans for the Veterans Memorial Park and now — joined by Kuo — supports using the 125-acre site for a super-sized, super-expensive botanical garden that has nothing to do with veterans or the City’s history with the former military base in the Great Park.Even though Khan no longer has the support of many Democratic activists here in Irvine, she was able to secure an early endorsement from the County’s Democratic Central Committee a few months ago. The endorsement came after an extremely close vote and was successful only after Khan’s longtime campaign manager and political mentor, Melahat Rafiei, intervened on her behalf. The Armenia-Artsakh road of life, opened by Pan-Armenian effort and spirit, including Berdzor, Aghavno river and village, became history with the testimony, participation, dedication and hand of our own generation. We are one more step closer to returning to the previous state of blockade of Artsakh. As long as the ex-pilgrim commander remains as a barbarian who blocks the way of modern Armenian history and the normal course of the Armenian people, the state and the nation will not have any hope or possibility of salvation. My brother is sad, but it seems that his family and party members (at least the ones I know) chose him against the Motherland based on the seat, money, and other related factors. Similarly, state-owned bodies, neglecting their constitutional duties, protect the safety of a certain official and not the constitutional order of the Republic and the rights of citizens. There is little time left to look for a way out of revision and atonement. This path of repentance and remorse applies equally to former authorities. Today’s stop, however, is imperative for all of us. We need to get out of our inner disappointment, indifference, malice, distress, fear and fatalism together. We need to get out of the territory of good intentions of individual fronts and movements. We must once again rely on a united approach with creative, valuable and targeted Armenian-centered solutions. Together we should choose the Motherland, not rejecting anyone, except the native rejecter. His sovereignty, integrity, and dignity are non-negotiable. And unbreakable. Stand up, Armenia.”

Can’t the Armenian government do anything right? Not a day passes without additional bad news from Armenia and Artsakh! Rather than blaming our enemies, we need to look at our own shortcomings and stop inflicting more wounds on ourselves.

In the midst of the severe crisis in Armenia after the devastating defeat in the 2020 Artsakh War, one would think that Armenian leaders would have the wisdom to unite the nation and strengthen the military to prevent further attacks on the country.

Surprisingly, Armenia has embarked on a course of action that is further dividing and weakening the nation. Armenian leaders are too incompetent to run a country with so many critical issues. Rather than trying to minimize Armenia’s losses, they are determined to add to the damage inflicted by its enemies.

For four years, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has been dividing Armenians into “blacks” and “whites,” Artsakhtsis and Hayastantsis, former leaders vs. the current one, and Armenia vs. Diaspora, at a time when Armenians desperately need to be unified. He has threatened to slam into the wall or the asphalt his domestic political opponents. He even went on the campaign trail last year holding a hammer in his hand, promising to smash the heads of those who oppose him.

Not only Pashinyan is too incompetent to lead Armenia, so are his cabinet ministers and advisors. An incompetent leader cannot make competent appointments.

Take for example, Pashinyan’s appointment of Zareh Sinanyan to the post of “High Commissioner of Diaspora Affairs.” Sinanyan’s only qualification is that he is a blind supporter of the Prime Minister. Consequently, Sinanyan has hardly accomplished anything worthwhile during his three years on the job, except for wasting the government’s meager budget on his and staff’s frequent travels around the world.

Sinanyan just announced that his office will hold a “Global Armenian Summit,” at the end of this October. One would have expected that he would have the common sense to invite to the “Global Summit” the representatives of all Armenian organizations and prominent individuals in Armenia and the Diaspora, regardless of their political affiliation.

However, Sinanyan’s and the Prime Minister’s only goal is to give the impression that they are busy doing something rather than actually accomplishing anything useful for the nation. Sinanyan shortsightedly decided, with the blessing of his boss, to invite to the “Global Armenian Summit” Armenians who are the regime’s supporters, leaving out those who have dared to oppose the current leaders. The government of Armenia is actually engaged in dividing, rather than unifying the Diaspora.

In any other normal country, an employee like Sinanyan would have been fired long ago for being incompetent and wasting the government’s precious resources. However, this Prime Minister will not fire an underling who is more incompetent than he is! Regrettably, Sinanyan does not even know his job description. He has foolishly advocated inviting Arab immigrants to Armenia, not realizing that his responsibility is dealing only with Diaspora Armenians, not Arabs or other nationalities. In his frequent TV interviews, Sinanyan constantly engages in partisan politics, criticizing major Armenian organizations, and creating further divisions in the nation. He does not understand that his job is not to act as a propagandist for Pashinyan’s regime, but be a government employee who is getting paid a salary to be a bridge between Armenia and the Diaspora.

If the excuse of Pashinyan and Sinanyan is that their political opponents would have refused to attend the “Global Armenian Summit,” that would have been a good reason to invite them. Those who reject the invitation would have looked bad and the government would have looked magnanimous rather than petty. The Armenian government cannot behave like a thug who wants to settle scores. Regrettably, it does not possess the maturity to rise above the fray. Armenia is the home of all Armenians, not only those who agree with the regime. A small and weak nation surrounded by powerful enemies cannot afford to splinter itself into smaller fragments.

Rather than embracing all Armenians worldwide, the government has rejected in recent weeks the entry of several prominent Diaspora Armenians whose sole guilt is that they are opponents of the supposedly “democratic” regime! Meanwhile, Turkish members of the Grey Wolves terrorist group are allowed to enter Armenia and insult the memory of the Armenian martyrs on the grounds of the Armenian Genocide Memorial in Yerevan!

In the past 20 years, Armenia has organized several Diaspora-Armenia conferences. None of them accomplished anything useful. Sinanyan’s planned “Summit” will have the same result. Pashinyan has repeatedly talked about allowing Diaspora Armenians to assume high-level positions in the Armenian government. Regrettably, beyond paying lip service, he has not taken any step in that direction. Similarly, Sinanyan announced with much fanfare around a year ago that his office will appoint Diaspora commissioners in Armenian communities around the world. Until now, he has not appointed a single such commissioner.

When Pashinyan came to power in 2018, he pledged to increase Armenia’s population from less than 3 million to 5 million by the year 2050. Regrettably, Armenia’s population in his four years in office has declined, not increased. Beyond just talking about encouraging repatriation to Armenia, nothing has been done.

It is high time that all Armenians unite to defend the homeland against the powerful enemies on both sides of the border. Before reconciling with Turks, Armenians first need to get along with each other.

BAGHDAD: Twelve protesters were killed Monday after supporters of cleric Moqtada Sadr stormed the government palace in Baghdad’s Green Zone after the powerful Shiite leader said he was quitting politics.
Shots were fired in the fortified area which houses government buildings as well as diplomatic missions, an AFP correspondent said, as tensions soared amid an escalating political crisis that has left Iraq without a new government, prime minister or president for months.
Medics told AFP that 12 Sadr supporters had been shot dead and 270 others protesters were hurt — some with bullet wounds and others suffering tear gas inhalation.
Witnesses said earlier that Sadr loyalists and supporters of a rival Shiite bloc, the pro-Iran Coordination Framework, had exchanged fire.

The army announced a nationwide curfew from 7:00 p.m. (1600 GMT), and security forces later patrolled the capital.
Calling the developments “an extremely dangerous escalation,” the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) urged “all” sides to “refrain from acts that could lead to an unstoppable chain of events.”
“The very survival of the state is at stake,” it warned.
The United States also urged calm amid the “disturbing” reports of unrest in Baghdad.
Protests later spread to other parts of the country, with Sadr followers storming government buildings in the cities of Nasiriyah and Hillah south of Baghdad, an AFP correspondent and witnesses said, with some roads also blocked in Hillah.

Iraq has been mired in political deadlock since legislative elections in October last year, due to disagreement between Shiite factions over forming a coalition.
Shortly after he made his surprise declaration, Sadr’s followers burst into the Republican Palace, where cabinet meetings are usually held.
Inside the opulent palace, protesters lounged in armchairs in a meeting room, some waved Iraqi flags and took photographs of themselves, and others cooled off in a swimming pool in the garden, in scenes reminiscent of anti-government protests in Sri Lanka last month.
Sadr — a grey-bearded preacher with millions of devoted followers, who once led a militia against American and Iraqi government forces — announced earlier on Monday on Twitter he was stepping back from politics.
“I’ve decided not to meddle in political affairs. I therefore announce now my definitive retirement,” said Sadr, a longtime player in the war-torn country’s political scene, though he himself has never directly been in government.
He added that “all the institutions” linked to his Sadrist movement will be closed, except the mausoleum of his father, assassinated in 1999, and other heritage facilities.
His latest statement came two days after he said “all parties” including his own should give up government positions in order to help resolve the political crisis.
His bloc emerged from last year’s election as the biggest, with 73 seats, but short of a majority. In June, his lawmakers quit in a bid to break the logjam, which led to the Coordination Framework becoming the largest bloc in the legislature.
Since then, Sadr has engaged in other pressure tactics, including a mass prayer by tens of thousands of his followers on August 5.
Hamzeh Hadad, from the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), said it was “not clear” what Sadr’s strategy was.
“Whatever it does mean, in typical Sadrist fashion, there is always backtracking expected,” Hadad said.
“The second, and more terrifying thought on this is that he is giving his followers the green light to do whatever they like.”
Sadr’s supporters have been calling for parliament to be dissolved and for new elections, but on Saturday the cleric said it was “more important” that “all parties and figures who have been part of the political process” since the 2003 US-led invasion “no longer participate.”
“That includes the Sadrist movement,” he said.
Over the years, the chameleon-like Sadr has taken various positions and then reversed them.
Sadr’s supporters have for weeks been staging a sit-in outside Iraq’s parliament, after storming the legislature’s interior on July 30, to press their demands.
They were angered after the Coordination Framework nominated a candidate they saw as unacceptable for prime minister.
The Framework wants a new head of government to be appointed before any new polls are held.
Caretaker Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhemi earlier this month convened crisis talks with party leaders, but the Sadrists boycotted.
Many Iraqis say the political infighting has nothing to do with their day-to-day struggles.
Iraq has been ravaged by decades of conflict and endemic corruption.
Oil-rich but blighted by ailing infrastructure, unemployment, power cuts and crumbling public services, Iraq now also faces water shortages as drought ravages swathes of the country.

The lawyer group of the former Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia Davit Tonoyan regularly receives questions from the media. And now he presented Davit Tonoyan’s answers to the questions received recently.

-Mr. Tonoyan, how do you evaluate the RA draft law “On Amendments and Additions to the Law on Military Service and the Status of Servicemen”, which, in particular, proposes to serve for 4.5 months instead of 2 years if you pay 24 million drams?

The presented project is in line with the “peace agenda” of the government and political authorities. Personally, I and the Ministry of Defense have always expressed our opposition to similar initiatives.

For me, the settings proposed by the project are unacceptable. Serving in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia should be welcomed and encouraged, not a “ransom” to be set for freedom from serving the motherland.

I wonder if there will be transparency about the names of people who will pay to free their children from the “deprivations” of at least 1.5 years of service in the armed forces.

• Recently, you and your lawyers have repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of the judge, but it seems that he will no longer deal with your case.

First of all, I should mention that after the case was submitted to the court, 7 court hearings were scheduled, of which only 4 took place. In general, during the past 8 months, about 8-9 hours of court hearings took place.

Although I am not concerned about the fact that the criminal case was sent to the Anti-Corruption Court, I cannot but record that Judge Manvel Shahverdyan was aware that the case was subject to the Anti-Corruption Court at least in 2021. since April, when the corresponding change was made in the “Judicial Code” RA constitutional law.

In my deep conviction, Judge Manvel Shahverdyan deliberately and thoughtfully delayed the court hearings during these months in order to “drop” this case. As a result, I and the other persons involved in the case were illegally imprisoned without any legal basis.

Moreover, by unreasonably delaying the process, the judge did not give me the opportunity to refute the prosecution’s claim that I can put pressure on the witnesses and other trial participants. And that is in the case that this fictitious “fear” is the only “justification” for keeping me in prison for almost a year.
