March 22, 2018 By administrator

The second-ever #ARTSAKHSTRONG Telethon, which encouraged Armenian–Australians to donate to the “Republic of Artsakh Independence, Security and Peace Foundation”, raised a massive $75,000, the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU) reports.

The visiting State Minister of the Republic of Artsakh, the Hon. Arayik Harutyunyan headlined TV and radio interviews, which also featured Primate of the Armenian Apostolic Church of Australia and New Zealand, Bishop Haigazoun Najarian, Kevork Vartanian – Chair of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF-AU) Central Committee, Kaylar Michaelian – Republic of Artsakh’s Representative to Australia, Hanriet Andriasian – Adviser to the Diaspora Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Galstaun College Principal Edward Demirdjian, and the Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU), Haig Kayserian.

Minister Harutyunyan praised what he was witnessing as something that should become an example for other communities.

“We are building a nation in Artsakh and refuse to rest on our laurels in our battle for recognition, and have chosen the path of democracy to achieve the peace our people crave and deserve,” he said. “I praise this community, the Armenian-Australian community is organised, it is clear in its directives and ready to sacrifice for the people of the Republic of Artsakh.”

Donations were received by hundreds of Armenian-Australians, Armenian-owned businesses, non-Armenian businesses and individuals in support of Artsakh. Many community organisations also participated in the Telethon with their donations, and representatives from organisations and committees including those under the umbrellas of the ARF-AU, the Armenian Apostolic Church, Hamazkaine Cultural & Educational Society, Homenetmen Sporting & Scouting Association, the Armenian Relief Society, the Armenian Youth Federation, the Macquarie University Armenian Students Association, the Armenian Church Youth Association, and the ANC-AU.

Live donations received from the Armenian Resource Centre of Australia, its MANOH Committee which aids refugee Armenians from the Middle East, as well as the Karen Jeppe College Alumni – Australian Chapter were very well received.

In Melbourne, the Armenian Community Centre in Springvale was also buzzing, with outcalls from members of the leaders of the local Armenian organisations leading to donations totalling nearly $7,000.

Armenian American Orphans Christmas Telethon raised just over $200K

October 4, 2017 By administrator

By Jeff Landa

This year’s Armenian American Orphans Christmas Telethon raised slightly more than $200,000 to help convert an existing facility in Spitak, Armenia, into a kindergarten, recreation center and gymnasium.

The event is hosted by the Armenian American Orphans and Disabled Children Fund.

Glendale resident Ovanes Balayan, who has operated the telethon for almost 20 years, confirmed the donation numbers last week but said the group is still tallying additional donations.

According to telethon spokesman Alex Kojababian, the annual event has raised money to construct nine orphanages and schools throughout Armenia since it began in 1999.

For almost 20 years, Glendale resident and TV show host Ovanes Balayan has raised money to help disadvantaged children in Armenia by organizing the Armenian American Orphans Christmas Telethon, which is set to be held Thursday.

Balayan’s nonprofit organization, the Armenian American Orphans and Disabled Children Fund, will host the 18th annual telethon and ask viewers to donate toward the renovation of an existing facility in Spitak, Armenia, into a kindergarten, recreation center and gymnasium.

According to telethon spokesman Alex Kojababian, the renovated site will serve more than 1,000 children and will take approximately 11 months to build. Last year’s telethon helped secure enough funds to build two schools from the ground up in Gymuri, Armenia, where about 600 children now attend.

“I love kids no matter if they are Armenian or not. I started this for Armenian kids, but if I can help any kids, I will,” Balayan said.

Balayan began the telethon in 1999 with help from a wealthy partner interested in raising money for underprivileged children in Armenia, Kojababian said. During the first telethon, broadcast in Glendale, Burbank and La Crescenta, Balayan raised “hundreds of thousands” of dollars, according to Kojababian.

That money went toward a three-day Christmas celebration for children at Aram Khachaturian’s event hall in Yerevan, Armenia. Since it began, the telethon has raised money to construct nine orphanages and schools throughout Armenia, Kojababian said.

“Our annual telethon raises more than $250,000, and every year that amount is growing,” Balayan said in a statement, adding that he’s confident this year’s telethon will be the most successful one yet.

The Armenian American Orphans Christmas Telethon will be held from 5 p.m. to midnight Thursday at the ARTV station, 4401 San Fernando Road. The event will be broadcast on AABC, High Vision and ARTV.

Balayan also hosts a Sunday TV show on AABC.

“We need support, so we can help those in need,” Balayan said. “For many years, we have been able to complete our goals due to the generosity of everyone that has contributed.”

Unprecedented Grassroots Support Elevates ANCA Telethon 2014

unnamed-271LITTLE ARMENIA—The ANCA Telethon 2014 rallied unprecedented grassroots support during its 6 hour nationwide broadcast, today, with tens of thousands of Armenian Americans from the across the U.S. joining in a true show of community power and unity to advance the civic education efforts of the ANCA Endowment.

After a of host of informative segments on the growing Armenian American presence in all segments of civic life, along with a health dose of community commentary and entertainment, more than $2,021,763 miillion was raised at the close of the Telethon in support of the educational and grassroots development efforts of the ANCA Endowment. Highlights from the broadcast are featured on the ANCA telethon website — and the ANCA Facebook page.

This year’s telethon was accompanied by a rush of Social media support with Armenians from around the world turning to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to spread the civic development message of the ANCA Endowment. The “#goANCA” selfie campaign spotlighted community groups, families and individuals – all united around the ANCA’s community empowerment initiatives.

Supporters also showed ANCA pride, power and progress at over a dozen private receptions held across the country to ensure the organization has the financial resources it needs to expand key youth development and civic engagement programs.

Nowhere was there more enthusiasm for ANCA initiatives than on the various Armenian School campuses throughout California, where educators used ANCA Telethon as a teaching moment to instill the importance for youth civic involvement and community pride from kindergarten to the high school level.

The ANCA Endowment Fund supports a broad range of educational, youth, and civic programs that give voice to the views and values of the Armenian American community, strengthening our presence in the American civic arena, and empowering pro-Armenian stakeholders with the information and resources they need to take on the powerful forces aligned against the Armenian nation.

The first three ANCA Endowment Fund telethons, held in 2006, 2009 and 2012, raised over $6.5 million for Armenian American educational, youth, and civic programs. Both programs touched a common emotional chord, speaking directly to the devotion to the Armenian Cause that rests in the hearts of Armenians from across the U.S., regardless of organizational or political affiliations.

Countless organizations, volunteers, churches, community leaders, local ANCAs, performing artists, Members of Congress, and state legislators from across the nation participated in the telethons, contributing to their enormous success. Both telethons featured several documentaries that highlighted various ANCA programs and numerous results the ANCA Endowment has achieved over the years, largely through its volunteer and grassroots network.

Complete coverage of ANCA Telethon 2014 will be provided in the upcoming weeks. The complete program will be rebroadcast by Horizon Armenian Television offering the community additional opportunities to support the initiative by visiting www.ancatelethon.org
