French-Armenian resistance fighter, hero Arsene Tchakarian dies at 101

August 6, 2018 By administrator

The last survivor of a famous group of immigrant workers that fought against the Nazi occupation of France during World War II died on Saturday, August 4 at the age of 101, French media reported.

Arsene Tchakarian, a tailor of Armenian origin, passed away at a hospital near his home in the Paris suburb of Vitry-sur-Seine, where he had lived since 1950, Deutsche Welle reports.

He had dedicated his life to fighting “facism,” French paper Le Figaro reported.

After fighting in the legendary resistance group Manouchian, Tchakarian’s historical and memorial tasks occupied him for the rest of his long life. He turned his home in an archival center, spoke at colleges and schools about the Nazi occupation of France, and campaigned for the recognition of the mass killings of Ottoman Armenians as a genocide.

“I’m sort of the last of the Mohicans, as they say,” Tchakarian said, according to French newspaper Le Figaro.

French President Emmanuel Macron paid homage to Tchakarian on Twitter, praising his historical work and calling him “a hero of the resistance and a tireless witness whose voice resounded with force until the end.”

Tchakarian was born to an Armenian family in Turkey in 1916. After fleeing to Bulgaria to escape Ottoman violence against Armenians, the family settled in France in 1930. He was conscripted into the French army in 1937, but was demobilized in 1940 once France surrendered to the Nazis.

By 1942 he had joined the Manouchians, a small resistance group made up of foreigners and named after its leader, the Armenian poet and communist Missak Manouchian.

“They were immigrants who had come from countries that were becoming fascist, like Hungary, Romania, Poland, Bulgaria,” Tchakarian said, according to the German News Agency. “From all those countries, there were immigrants who were kind of hunted out.”

The Manouchian group carried out an intense campaign of resistance activities against the Nazi German occupation of France that included attacks and acts of sabotage such as assassinations and train derailments.

In 1944, 23 members of the group were rounded up and sentenced to death by a German martial court in a highly publicized trial.

After the execution of Tchakarian’s fellow group members, Nazi German authorities and French officials in the collaborationist Vichy government hung up infamous red posters, known as the “Affiche Rouge,” denouncing the members of the Manouchian group as “the army of crime” in an attempt to sway public opinion against the resistance fighters.

Tchakarian managed to escape to Bordeaux and was taken into hiding by fellow resistance members. He remained active in the resistance until the war’s end.

After the war, he turned his focus to history, writing multiple memoirs, and fighting for recognition of the Armenian genocide.

As recently June 18, the former resistance fighter attended a ceremony commemorating the French Resistance, Le Parisien reported.

Tchakarian was granted French citizenship in 1958. He received multiple medals for bravery in the war and in 2012, he received France’s highest distinction, the Legion of Honor.

Iran fully supporting Syria resistance: Larijani

June 1, 2015 By administrator

Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani (R) and Speaker of the Syrian People's Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Laham

Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani (R) and Speaker of the Syrian People’s Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Laham

Iran’s Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani says the Islamic Republic will fully support the resistance of the Syrian nation under the current “difficult” situation in the Middle East.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will spare no effort to support the Syrian government and nation politically and economically,” Larijani said in a meeting with Speaker of the Syrian People’s Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Laham in Tehran on Monday. Report Presstv

Larijani commended Syrians for their resistance against the Israeli regime during recent years and said the Arab country is paying the price for supporting the resistance forces.

He added that the Middle East is currently in a complicated and shifting situation, saying, “Global powers intend to impose new equations on the region in line with their hegemonic policies by continuing to back terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq.”

The Iranian Majlis speaker also condemned the Saudi military campaign against and killing of the oppressed Yemeni people.

“The attack by a Muslim country on another Muslim country and the continuation of the crisis in Syria and Iraq show the wrong policy adopted by some regional countries which will lead to the continuation of crises and insecurity in the region,” Larijani pointed out.

On March 26, Saudi Arabia launched its airstrikes on Yemen without a UN mandate. The military campaign is aimed at restoring power to Yemen’s fugitive former President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who is a close ally of Riyadh.

According to the UN, the conflict in Yemen has claimed the lives of about 2,000 people and displaced more than 500,000.

Saudi Arabia, main enemy of Muslim world

The Syrian speaker, for his part, said Saudi Arabia is the main enemy of the Muslim world, adding that the Saudi Wahabbism ideology has led to the spread of extremist and terrorist groups across the region.

Al-Laham said Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey provided terrorists in Syria with military support in order to improve the Israeli regime’s security and added that the three countries’ policies increased insecurity and violence in the region.

He urged Muslim countries and the United Nations to play a more active role on regional issues.

The Syrian official also praised Iran’s material and spiritual support for his country over recent years.

The Syrian army and pro-government forces have been fighting foreign-backed militants since March 2011.

The ongoing militancy in Syrian has killed 222,000 people to date, the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says.
