Robert Kocharyan 2nd President of Armenia released: Court of Appeals approves attorneys’ appeal

The Court of Appeals has approved the appeal of attorneys against the decision of the 1st instance court to remand 2nd President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan in custody, reports Armenpress.

45 MPs signed a petition to change Kocharyan’s precautionary measure, but the Prosecutor General’s Office rejected it.

The Court of Appeals has examined the appeal of attorneys for two days after which it was announced that the court’s ruling will be released on August 13, at 16:00.

Robert Kocharyan has been charged on July 26 over the 2008 March 1 case, under the Article 300.1 part 1 of the Criminal Code for breaching the constitutional order of the Republic of Armenia. He has been remanded into custody. His attorneys appealed the court ruling.

Jirayr Sefilyan released on signature bond, sentence cut in half

YEREVAN, JUNE 13, ARMENPRESS. A Yerevan court has overruled the verdict of Jirayr Sefilyan, the man who is convicted of illegally acquiring firearms and organizing riots. Sefilyan’s initial sentence was 10 years and five months. The sentence was cut in half.

Today, the court examined the appeal of Sefilyan and the latter was released from the courthouse – on a signature bond. Sefilyan will serve the remainder of his sentence non-incarcerated, on a signature bond – taking into account the guarantees from certain lawmakers.

Top Armenian Opposition Party Member Released On Bail

YEREVAN — A Yerevan appeals court has granted bail to another leading member of the Heritage opposition party who was charged in connection with his participation at a recent rally.

The court on August 19 ordered David Sanasarian, who serves as a member of Yerevan’s municipal assembly as part of an opposition faction, to pay 1.5 million drams (about $3,150) before being freed pending his trial.

On August 17, the court released the deputy chairman of the Heritage party, Armen Martirosian, on bail.

Sansarian and Martirosian were arrested on July 29 along with another top Heritage party member and an opposition activist on charges of organizing mass disturbances during public protests on that day and remanded to pretrial detention earlier this month.

On August 16, the Heritage party announced it was pulling out of local elections scheduled for September-October because of the arrests of its leading members.

Yerevan Update: Armed group frees all hostages from seized police building

hostage released2YEREVAN. – Two remaining hostages — both senior police officers — kept in the seized police headquarters in Yerevan had been released.

Deputy chief of Armenia’s police Vardan Yeghiazaryan and deputy chief of Yerevan policy Valery Osipyan has been released by an armed group.

Earlier on Saturday the gunmen set free other two hostages had been released without preconditions.

According to Shant television, member of the group Varuzhan Avetisyan met with the director of the National Security Service Gevorg Kutoyan and decided to release another two hostages in exchange for setting up a media center. The report was confirmed for Shant television by General Vitaly Balasanyan who was a mediator in the meeting.

“The process of creating a neutral zone for their communication with reporters is underway,” Balasanyan said. “As soon as the center is set up, two remaining hostages – Osipyan and Yeghiazaryan – would be released.”

It has been the seventh day since a group of armed men stormed into a capital city Yerevan police station.

arton119624-480x365Baku, December 9, 2015 (AFP) – The Azerbaijani Justice released from prison Wednesday rights activist Leyla Yunus Human, commuting his sentence of eight and a half years in prison, suspended sentence, said a journalist from AFP at the trial.

The Baku Court of Appeal sentenced the activist to five years suspended sentence, Ms. Yunus justifying the release from prison of the deterioration of his health. She was sentenced in August to eight and a half years in prison for “fraud” and “tax evasion”.

Her husband, Arif Yunus, was also sentenced to seven years in prison for the same reasons before being released in November because of his poor health. Since he pleaded for the release of his wife, according to his lawyers who suffers from liver necrosis.

Leyla Yunus, director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy, and her husband Arif, renowned political analyst, were arrested in the summer of 2014 for “treason” and “tax evasion” charges that spouses reject. Justice accuses including Leyla Yunus espionage in favor of Armenia and attempt to “propaganda for recognition Nagorno Karabakh regime,” a separatist region that are fighting for decades Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Incarcerated for over a year, she said “she was beaten in his detention center.” The Ministry of Justice had denied the accusations.

The NGOs defending human rights, including Human Rights Watch (HRW), had repeatedly called for the release of this woman who has been campaigning for several years to promote reconciliation between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the status of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The NGOs defending human rights regularly denounce the regime of President Ilham Aliyev, including any dispute as soon as it provokes a severe reaction from the authorities of that country’s oil-rich Caucasus.

‘Republic of Armenia. Historical encyclopedia’ released

f55fbf261b3deb_55fbf261b3e22.thumbA one-volume abridged edition of the 11-volume “Republic of Armenia. Historical encyclopedia” has been released.

Author Manvel Hakobyan presented the volume to reporters on Friday.

The encyclopedia contains information on all the settlements of Armenia, their history and culture. It also contains information on the historical and cultural monuments of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).

“I also included information on Armenian cultural monuments in Georgia and Iran. All the pictures of the monuments – with few exceptions and their authors named – are mine,” Mr Hakobyan said.

Copies of the volume have been sent to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, Speaker of Armenia’s Parliament Galust Sahakyan and Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan.

“I have worked on this book for 30 years, collecting all the necessary information and pictures of monuments. The volume contains information on more than 20,000 monuments, and more than 10,000 pictures.”
