Armenian-language film “Yeva” put on the list of Oscar Best Foreign Film category

yevaThe Armenian-language film “Yeva” –  a co-production between Armenia and Iran, was included in the preliminary list of the nomination in the best foreign-language film category for the 90th Academy Awards films. As the Cinema Center of Armenia reported on Monday, the list is made of submission from 92 states with six of them included for the first time. Only several of the nominations will be shortlisted for the Award after the jury screenings.

Written and directed by Armenian-Iranian producer Anahit Abad, the feature stars many recognized actors and actresses from Armenia, such as Narine Grigoryan, Shant Hovhannisyan, Marjan Avetisyan, Rozi Avetisyan, Sergey Tovmasyan, Vrezh Qasuni, Tigran Davtyan, Nanor Petrosyan, Evelina Adamyan, Marat Davtyan, others.

The film production was financed by National Cinema Center of Armenia and Farabi Cinema Foundation.
The movie synopsis is centered on Yeva –  a young woman, who escapes her influential in-laws with her daughter Nareh, after her husband’s tragic death and takes refuge in one of the villages of Karabakh, Armenia…Yeva is a complete stranger in this village and is obliged to live her daily life in disguise.

Elton John introduces “The Promise” Genocide drama at Oscar party

Elton John and the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) Chairman David Furnish introduced Armenian Genocide film The Promise at West Hollywood Park during an Oscar commercial break, Asbarez reports citing The Verge.

“Survival Pictures committed to donate all proceeds from the film to nonprofit organizations, including EJAF and other humanitarian groups,” E!Online reported. “As part of its commitment, Survival Pictures matched the pledges each guest made to EJAF via text and live auction purchases at the event.”

The Promise, staring Christian Bale and Oscar Isaac, tells the story of the Armenian Genocide at the outset of World War I.

“Proud to introduce Open Road Films and Survival Pictures’ new film “The Promise” at #EJAF25 #KeepthePromise Survival Pictures will also be matching guest pledges made to EJAF via text & live auction purchases during our Academy Awards Viewing Party. Written by Terry George and Robin Swicord and directed by Terry George (Hotel Rwanda), The Promise stars Oscar Issac, Christian Bale, and Charlotte Le Bon,” reads a post on the EJAF Facebook page.

The Academy Awards viewing party raised a record of $7 million to help end HIV/AIDS.

“Armenia, My Love” in Oscars race and now available on Amazon Prime

“Armenia, My Love” is in the race for the 2017 Oscars Awards and gets release on Amazon Prime, where users can watch it for no extra charge, the Broadway World reports.

Silvia Leonetti, the composer, is in the competition for ‘Best Score’ against 144 other films. The short list for the actors include Diana Angelson, Shake Tukhmanyan and Maria Georoiu for female actors, as well as Arman Nshanian, Nazo Bravo and Anatol Rezmeritza for male actors.

The Director, Diana Angelson, who also stars in the film as a pregnant mother, centers her script on a young boy who escapes the Genocide, makes it to the United States and becomes a successful Armenian-American painter. His works depict his childhood, family and struggles back in his native country.

“While ‘Armenia, My Love’ does expose the harsh realities faced by the entire Armenian people who were violently ripped from their homeland, it is ‘Armenia, My Love’s’ strong messages of hope, love, faith, perseverance and strength that I wanted to prevail,” Angelson said in a statement.

Earlier this year Pope Francis has met and blessed the Director and received a copy of the DVD or Armenia My Love.

Armenian National Film Academy receives 3 applications for Oscars submission

oscar-2017The National Film Academy of Armenia has received three applications for submission to the 89th Academy Award. The movies submitted are Jivan Avetisyan’s “The Last Inhabitant”, Davit Safarian’s “28:94 Local Time”, and Sarik Andreasyan’s “Earthquake”, Jivan Avetisyan told Panorama.am. Members of the academy have to choose between the films.

“The Last Inhabitant” is Jivan Avetisyan’s second film dedicated to Artsakh, after “Tevanik”. Jivan Avetisyan, who is from Artsakh grew up witnessing the hardships and privations his family and the village withstood. During the past 10 years, the director has shot documentaries and short films, trying to raise awareness about Artsakh and its problems.

“The Last Inhabitant” contains a powerful message about nationality and the fact that even war cannot destroy cherished values.

Davit Safarian’s “28:94 Local Time” is a feature film about a man and a woman who found themselves in an almost absurd situation, because of electricity crisis. The film is about their stories, memories, imagination and dreams. The screenplay is written by Davit Safarian and Yana Drouz. The cast includes Ashot Adamyan, Heghine Hovhannisyan, Yana Drouz, Karen Janibekyan, Vigen Stepanyan, Harutyun Movsisyan, Hrachya Harutyunyan.

Sarik Andreasyan’s “Earthquake” tells about the devastating Spitak earthquake of December 7th, 1988. The story is set in Leninakan. Konstantin Berezhnoy, a 50-year-old Russian, and Robert Melkonyan, a 28-year-old Armenian, work together to rescue the desperate survivors. Screenwriters are Sergey Yudakov, Aleksey Gravitskiy and Arsen Danielyan. The cast includes Konstantin Lavronenko, Mariya Mironova, Artyom Bystrov, Hrant Tokhatyan, Irina Bezrukova, Michael Poghosian, Sos Janibekyan and others.
