Turkey: So gays, too, should go to lab to check their Turkishness?

The laboratories that can perform blood tests to check a human being’s Turkishness are becoming a niche market. That is a business imperative in a country where tens of millions of people are accused of being traitors and terrorists. Naturally, they are not Turks, given the scientific fact that a Turk cannot be a traitor or a terrorist.

No doubt, a new market is emerging after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said the Turkish German MPs who voted in favor of the Armenian genocide resolution in the Bundestag “should go to a lab and check the Turkishness of their blood.”

After the recent jihadist’s attack at a gay club in Orlando, a Turkish Islamist daily newspaper announced the massacre in a headline that said “50 perverts killed in a bar in the U.S.” A better headline could have been “Muslim hero kills 50 perverts.”

On Wednesday, the Alperen Hearths, an ultranationalist youth organization, threatened the LGBT Pride March set to take place on June 26 in Istanbul’s Taksim Square. The Alperens’ threat came shortly after a similar threat made by an Islamist youth group, the Anatolia Muslim Youth Association, which said it would “stop the perversion.”

The Alperens, with 100 percent tested top quality Turkish blood, basically said:

– We will take all necessary risks and we will stop the march.

– We don’t want them to walk naked on the sacred soil of our country in the blessed month of Ramadan.

– This is not normal freedom. We are issuing a warning and we are not responsible for what will happen after this point.

– The Alperens will give a “very clear and harsh response” if the state did not intervene in the march.

The Alperen Hearths claim that they are the representatives of the people and their duties (such as attacking gays) were passed to them from their ancestors. In the Turkish ultra-nationalist jargon, “our ancestors” often refer to the glorious old times. The Alperens probably don’t know (or want to know) that there is a rich international literature showing how common pederasty was in the society. Some sources quote Halil İnalcık, a prominent professor of history, as saying that “homosexuality was a custom accepted by the society.”

Unsurprisingly, the Alperens stated that it is their religious duty to command good and forbid evil, by force if necessary. Sadly, the Pride March falls into this category: It must be forbidden, by force if necessary. If the state does not stop the perverts, the pure 100 percent-DNA Turks will do.

The Alperens are not the first group adding to an already too rich literature of incidents forcefully exhibiting two ugly asymmetries: 1- Pluralism and Islamist thinking are an oxymoron. 2- Islamists will typically advocate majoritarianism in lands where they are the majority (including majoritarian practices by force, if necessary) but defend minority rights in lands where they are in a minority (as in Europe, for example).
In the Alperens’ public statement, the key line was: “We don’t want them [the other] on the sacred soil of our country.” This is just like a European neo-Nazi saying: We don’t want Muslims on the sacred soil of our country. Right? Right. What would an Alperen say to that? Fascists, Islamophobes, uncivilized monsters!
Alperens and the likes of them will probably never be able to understand that a gay parade will not make them “perverts.” A church sitting at the heart of a Muslim city will not make its Muslims Christian. Really, could a laboratory run blood tests and find out why these people are so afraid of “conversion to perversion” just by the sight of “the other”?

Campaign Needs Tweaking? John McCain’s Fundraiser Arrested for Meth Lab © Flickr/ Marc Nozell POLITICS

1038735485Is the beleaguered US Senator’s reelection bid taking a page from the hit series Breaking Bad in a desperate attempt to appeal to young voters?

On Tuesday, 34-year-old Emily Pitha was arrested for narcotics distribution and manufacturing when Maricopa County sheriff’s deputies found an active meth lab and illicit drugs during a search of her north-central Phoenix home.

Pitha, a former staffer for retired Arizona Republican US Senator Jon Kyl, was serving as the chief fundraiser for Arizona Republican Senator John McCain’s 2016 reelection bid at the time of her arrest. The McCain campaign immediately released a statement saying Pitha was “immediately terminated upon our learning of her alleged involvement in narcotics distribution”

The sheriff’s office spokesperson said that they were alerted to criminal activity at the residence after a package was identified in transit from the Netherlands carrying over 250 grams of MDMA, street name ecstasy, a popular and illegal psychoactive drug. Pitha’s boyfriend, 36-year-old Christopher Hustrulid, signed for the package when it was delivered Tuesday afternoon, right before a search warrant was served.

At the residence, officers found LSD, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and counterfeit money along with an operating meth lab. Pitha and Hustrulid also face child-endangerment charges for exposing two children in the home to the drugs.

Detective Doug Matteson said that the two children, ages 5 and 10, “had easy access to all of (the) drugs and materials, even the bomb-making materials that were located in the back with the meth lab.” Methamphetamine production involves volatile elements also used in manufacturing explosives.

The news comes as McCain finds himself in the most competitive reelection campaign of his career. In the Republican Primary, the embattled US Senator faces an insurgent challenge from Tea Party Republican state senator Kelli Ward who has successfully tapped into the anti-establishment narrative of the 2016 election cycle.

In the potential general election match-up, polling shows McCain is tied with Democratic Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick at 45-45 with ten percent of voters remaining undecided.

McCain has represented Arizona as a US Senator for 29 years, first assuming office in January 1987. Prior to his career in politics, he suffered harrowing torture as a prisoner of war between 1967 to 1973, in the notorious Hanoi Hilton torture camp in Vietnam.

Afghan opium is being processed into high-grade heroin in clandestine Turkish drug labs for distribution in Europe and Russia, Russia’s anti-drug chief has revealed. The trafficking route was exposed after a joint Russian-Afghan anti-drug operation.

“The cargo traveled through Badakhshan-Doshi-Bamiyan-Herat, then further through Iran and into Turkey, where the opium was processed in well-equipped laboratories…into high quality heroin, and then was to be sent to Europe and Russia,” Ivanov said during an anti-narcotics committee meeting.

The head of Russia’s federal anti-drug agency (FKSN) Viktor Ivanov reported that 600 kilograms of opium was seized in a joint operation carried out by Russian and Afghan special anti-drug units in the city of Doshi in Afghanistan’s Baglan Province.

The operation was conducted in mid-December by Afghanistan’s Kabul Gates anti-drug unit with intelligence support from the FKSN, Ivanov said. The drug shipment was found in an Afghani truck traveling
to Turkey via Iran.

The FSKN head stressed that drug trafficking has enabled Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) to boost its numbers four-fold since 2014, Ivanov said.

“The spike in IS fighters corresponds with the annual increase of drug smuggling in the Middle East, which is confirmed by the growing number of heroin seizures in the region,” Ivanov said.

Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) is “actively engaged with drug trafficking,” Ivanov said, adding that according to the FSKN estimates, the group’s income from illegal drug trade “makes up to $200-500 million annually.”

By Andrada Fiscutean

bulgaria-sofia-thumbHP has opened a 300-square metre Technology Lab in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, part of the company’s Technology Services Lab infrastructure.

HP has invested BGN 10m (€5.1m) in the Technology Lab located in Business Park Sofia. It is the largest investment of this kind the company made in Europe, Iravan Hira, general manager of Hewlett-Packard Bulgaria, said at the recent opening of the facility, according to the Bulgarian News Agency. The Bulgarian prime minister Boyko Borissov, the transport, IT and communications minister Ivaylo Moskovski and US ambassador Marcie Ries were invited to the opening.

“The purpose of the lab is predominantly to allow HP technical staff to have hands-on experience with our latest technology on an ongoing basis, as well as in some instances also replicate customer issues,” an HP EMEA spokesperson told ZDNet.

The Technology Lab will provide support for local academic institutions such as the Technical University in Sofia, the St. Kliment Ohridski University, the New Bulgarian University, and the Sofia-based John Atanasov High School of Electronics. Students will be able to use HP’s resources for learning purposes.

“This will provide a foundation for our staff in Sofia to build a delivery capability at a higher level of quality and complexity to meet the ever increasing requirements of our customers,” HP EMEA’s spokesperson said.

HP has hired over 6,000 professionals in Sofia in the past nine years, according to the company. At the moment, HP has 60 job openings in the Bulgarian capital.

The country offers the sixth lowest tax levels for a medium-sized company in the EU and the European Free Trade Association, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The IT sector in Bulgaria employs over 20,000 software engineers in R&D roles alone, according to Bulgarian Association of Software Companies. Another 20,000 IT professionals work in outsourcing, making IT the fastest-growing sector of the Bulgarian economy.
