CAIRO, Egypt (Armenpress)—The Parliament of Egypt is preparing to include the resolution on condemning the Armenian Genocide by Ottoman Turkey in its agenda.

Head of the Armenian National Committee of Egypt Armen Mazlumyan said that Egyptian MP Mustafa Pakri mentioned the inclusion of the resolution during a meeting with a European delegation.

“Mustafa Pakri briefed the members of the delegation on the stance of the Egyptian Parliament regarding the Armenian Genocide, affirming that they are preparing to present the resolution on condemning the massacres by Turkey to voting. He confirmed that it is a “shame stigma” for Turkey and all other governments must also condemn that inhumane massacre” said Mazlumyan.

Pakri said they initiated a petition and 337 lawmakers approved the initiative on recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide – expressing confidence that the voting will be done in favor of the resolution. The Egyptian lawmaker also condemned the stance of Arab states regarding the Armenian Genocide, mentioning that until now only Lebanon has recognized it.

Cyprus, Egypt to build gas pipeline

August 31, 2016 By administrator

cyprus-egypt-piplineCyprus and Egypt have announced they’re aiming to build a natural gas pipeline between the two Mediterranean countries. Talks on the project will be sped up, but the pipeline will not be operational before 2020.

Cyprus and Egypt signed a deal in Nicosia Wednesday paving the way for detailed negotiations on a pipeline to export natural gas from Cyprus to its energy-starved neighbor.

“It’s one of a series of legal arrangements, which will further support the sale of Cypriot natural gas to buyers in Egypt, provide certainty to investors and complement relevant commercial discussions now underway,” a joint statement said.

Natural gas reservoirs have been discovered below the seabed south of Cyprus, with exploitation not expected to start before 2018.

Lucrative business

Cyprus’ Energy Minister, Georgios Lakkotrypis, said given the planned start of exploitation, the aim was to get the new pipeline operational sometime between 2020 and 2022.

Nicosia has been eager to secure alternative ways to exploit its offshore reserves after confirmed finds so far were insufficient to make a liquefied natural gas plant on the island’s southern coast financially viable. By contrast, Egypt already has the option of turning the raw material into LNG, which can be transported over long distances far better.

Egypt is expected to use the gas imports primarily for domestic consumption, but in part also for re-exporting.

Since its first offshore gas find back in 2011, Cyprus has held a series of exploration licensing rounds, hoping to discover new deposits. In the latest round, US giant ExxonMobil with Qatar Petroleum are among a total of eight major energy players bidding to look for offshore oil and gas.

Egyptian MPs urge parliament and government to recognize Armenian Genocide

July 26, 2016 By administrator

Egypt armenian genocide

Egyptian MP Mostafa Bakri has called on parliament and ‎the government to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

He and 336 MPs have called on parliament ‎to approve a draft resolution in favour of ‎recognizing the death of 1.5 ‎million Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman state in 1915 as a “genocide”, AhramOnline reported.‎

‎Independent MP Bakri calls for a special session on ‎the issue because the crime “should be ‎condemned by all world parliaments.”

“New historical evidence has ‎exposed the slaughter of 1.5 million ‎Armenians at the hands of Ottoman Turks ‎between 1915 and 1922,” Bakri said.

Bakri concluded that while “the Ottomans ‎committed the 1915 massacre, the Erdogan regime is now moving to commit ‎another crime against his political ‎opponents and minorities that seek ‎independence.”

MP Talaat Khalil supports Bakri’s ‎draft resolution and believes that perpetrators ‎must admit their crimes and apologize.

“But it is clear that the arrogant Erdogan ‎regime will never admit that this massacre ‎[took place] because he believes himself to be a new ‎Ottoman sultan,” Khalil told reporters, adding that Egypt has always been a shelter for the ‎Armenians since the 1915 massacre.

Egypt sentences ex-President Morsi to life in espionage trial

June 18, 2016 By administrator

morci-sentanceAn Egyptian court Saturday, June 18 sentenced former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi to life in prison in an espionage trial in which six of his co-defendants were handed death penalties, AFP reports.

The court acquitted Morsi of charges of having supplied Qatar with classified documents but sentenced him to life for leading an unlawful organisation, his lawyer Abdel Moneim Abdel Maksoud told AFP.

The ousted president was also convicted of having “stolen secret documents concerning state security” and handed another 15-year jail term, the lawyer added.

Qatar was a main backer of Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood movement while he was in power between 2012 and July 2013, when the military overthrew and detained him, AFP says.

Morsi has been sentenced to death in a separate trial for his alleged role in prison breaks and attacks on police stations during the 2011 uprising that overthrew veteran strongman Hosni Mubarak.

He has also received a life sentence and a 20-year jail term in two other trials.

On Saturday the court confirmed death sentences against six defendants, including three journalists tried in absentia who allegedly helped relay secret documents to Qatar.

The journalists have been identified as Ibrahim Mohamed Hilal and Jordanian citizen Alaa Omar Mohamed Sablan, both of Qatar-based Al-Jazeera channel.

The third has been named as Asmaa Mohamed al-Khatib, a female reporter with pro-Muslim Brotherhood news outlet Rassd, AFP says.

The death sentences had been sent to the mufti — Egypt’s official interpreter of Islamic law — as Egyptian law requires his opinion on death sentences although his opinion is not binding.

The verdicts can be appealed.

Yanni to broadcast Egypt concert from pyramids

December 24, 2015 By administrator

0,,18632759_303,00-1Yanni, the prolific New Age composer known for extravagant live performances, plans a busy 2016 that includes a broadcast of a concert at the ancient pyramids at Giza.
The Greek-born, US-based keyboardist announced that “Yanni: The Dream Concert — Live from the Great Pyramids of Egypt,” will air on US public broadcaster PBS in March, Al-Arabiya reports.

Yanni played his first-ever concert in Egypt in October, bringing an orchestra and an accompanying light show to the pyramids.
The showcase of the ancient wonder could offer a publicity boon for Egypt as it struggles to ease overseas tourists’ safety concerns.
At the same time, a number of Egyptians complained on social media that Yanni’s two shows were too expensive for them.
The concert film will be Yanni’s 12th for PBS. The first, and most famous, was a concert by Yanni at the Acropolis in his native Greece recorded in 1993.
Yanni on January 29 will also release a new album, “Sensuous Chill,” which his label said would include a track with a touch of bhangra, the energetic dance music with roots in Punjab.
Yanni plans a tour across North America for the album, starting on February 2 in Sarasota, Florida.

CAIRO (Sputnik) – According to the statement, the issue was discussed by Egypt’s Minister of Industry and Trade Tarek Kabil and his Russian counterpart, Denis Manturov, at a meeting in the United Arab Emirates.

“Egypt is interested to meet the needs of the Russian market in goods, especially those that came from Turkey, in light of Russia’s decision to limit the Turkish imports to the Russian market in fruit and vegetables to 66 percent, as well as in clothing and leather,” the statement said.
