7-year-old Armenian from Chicago wins World Chess Championship

A 7-year-old American chess player of Armenian origin, Aren Emrikian has won the World Chess Federation’s Cadet Championship gold medal for male players younger than 8, The Chicago Tribune reports.

His victory came after 11 rounds of play in the Brazilian city of Pocos de Caldas.

In a recent interview, Emrikian reveals that it was his mom who taught him play chess. The little champion said he practices every week with his coach (Glenview resident Mesgen Amanov) for one hour and 30 minutes.

Also, Emrikian said he is a great Harry Potter fan and has read every single Percy Jackson book.

Vladimir Hakobyan – winner of the Rapid Chess Tournament in Dubai

chess-hakopyan-dubaiArmenian GM Vladimir Hakobyan won the Rapid Chess Tournament dedicated to the national day of United Arab Emirates. The tournament featured 180 chess players from 25 countries, including 5 grand masters and 3 international masters taking part in the tournament.

Vladimir Hakobyan earned 8 points out of 9 available. Viktor Moskalenko of Spain came the second with 8 points, yet bypassed by Hakobyan on additional indicators.

Armenia has gold and bronze medalists at Sabadell 2016

armenia-gold-chessArmenia has two medalists at the international chess tournament Sabadell 2016 Chess.am reports.
In the final round, Karen Grigoryan defeated Marc Narciso Dublan taking the gold medal, and Karen Movsisyan ended his match in a draw with Kevel Castaneda Olivia.

Grigoryan, who scored 7, initially shared the first two top positions with a Cuban rival. Additional scores, however, later made him a tournament leader. Movsisyan, scoring 6.5 won bronze.

Armenia wins two golds at European Youth Chess Championship

youth-chessArmenian chess players won two gold medals at the European Youth Chess Championship in Prague, the Czech Republic.

Mamikon Gharibyan won gold in Boys under 12 (B12) category, scoring eight points out of possible nine.

Meanwhile, Manuel Petrosyan won the B18 category with 7.5 points.

Several other Armenians participated and were included at least in the top 10 in their respective categories at the European Championship which lasted ten days with around 6000 games.

Russia won 15 medals in total, including 5 gold ones.

Armenian grandmaster wins European Rapid Chess Championship silver

202671Belarusian capital hosted the European Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships on December 17-20.

Armenian grandmaster Hrant Melkumyan finished second at the European Rapid Chess Championship, gaining 9.5 points out of 11 possible, ArmSport.am reports.

Russia’s Ivan Popov beat the Armenian chess player by only half a point to score the 1st place, with Ukraine’s Vadim Razin (9 points) taking the third spot.

At the European Blitz Championship, Melkumyan ranked sixth.

Other Armenian players also participated in the championships: Tigran L. Petrosyan finished 7th in the Blitz and 6th in the Rapid, Zaven Andreasyan – 5th and 19th respectively, Sergei Movsesian – 22th and 12th, Gevorg Harutyunyan – 64th and 57th, David S. Gevorgyan – 187th and 357th.

Memorial chess tournament in Toronto to mark Armenian Genocide

chess-26-620x300One of the top chess masters in Canada will compete in Toronto during a memorial tournament held in honour of the victims of the Armenian genocide, CTV News reports.

The “Chess to Remember,” hosted in Toronto on Sunday, is meant to raise awareness of the death of 1.5 Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman government.

It’s being held as part of the commemoration of the Centenary of the Armenian Genocide, which began on April 24, 1915.

More than 80 participants have registered to take part in the event, including a grand chess master, four international masters and two women international masters. An additional five FIDE (World Chess Federation) masters and seven national masters will be in attendance.

The event will be broadcast live online.

The tournament takes place at the Toronto Armenian Community Centre. A total of $2,500 is up for grabs in prizes, trophies and medals.

Chess: Armenian declared German club champion

German club ChampionLilit Mkrtchyan of Armenia has won the champion’s title at competitions held by the German chess club Bad Königshofen.

In the final match, the Armenian sportswoman beat Baden-Baden, the main rival, 3.5:2.5.

Mkrtchyan had earlier celebrated a victory over Anna Zatonskih of the United States.
