Report Turkey to Build military base on Armenian territory Nakhichevan occupied by Azerbaijan

September 7, 2018 By administrator

Armenian political analyst Suren Sargsyan states Turkey’s plans to build a military base in the Azerbaijan-controlled Nakhichevan region should raise serious concerns in Russia.

The analyst does not find it accidental that ahead of today’s trilateral meeting of the Russian, Iranian and Turkish presidents in Tehran, as well as Saturday’s meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Vladimir Putin, Turkish and Azerbaijani media actively report about Turkey’s plans to launch its third military base (after Somali and Qatar) in Nakhichevan.

According to him, this will be the first military base deployed by a NATO member state in the Post-soviet territory.

“Moscow has a serious reason for concerns,” he said in a post on Facebook.

Armenian Museum in Watertown to open new gallery om November

August 30, 2018 By administrator

The Armenian Museum of America in Watertown is updating its space under the leadership of new Executive Director Jennifer Liston Munson. The museum will open its new gallery to public in November, Wicked Local reports.

Munson has an extensive art background and worked as a senior member of the Exhibitions and Designs department at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Before becoming executive director, she had collaborated on many projects and exhibitions with the Armenian Museum.

Munson wants the museum to be a place of discovery. A place where Armenian-Americans can connect to their heritage, and also a place where people of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds can learn how integrated the Armenian experience is with American culture and identity.

“We are creating a space to welcome people, to educate, and to enlighten,” she said.

Munson is also introducing new exhibition concepts. She wants to create a space that is dynamic rather than stagnant. To do this, she is organizing cultural events. Some might feature Armenian music, of Armenian cooking, but the idea is to bring art alive.

Munson is also creating an introduction gallery. The gallery will be at the front of the museum entrance and will highlight different Armenian artifacts every month. The artifacts will be accompanied by descriptions narrating their different histories, and how each came to the museum.

The museum has permanent collections that highlight Armenia’s ancient history and the genocide. Munson is also working to integrate more about the Armenia diaspora which is not a well-known tale.

Munson is a non-Armenian trying to tell the Armenian story. However, she believes that sometimes it takes somebody from the outside to help tell the story in a way that will connect with everyone. Her museum background and expertise, she believes will allow her to do this successfully.

Armenian Akhtamar Church eyes UNESCO World Heritage list

August 11, 2018 By administrator

Akhtamar Church (the Church of the Holy Cross), a medieval Armenian church in Turkey’s eastern Van province draws the interest of foreign and domestic visitors, Anadolu Agency said in an article about Akhtamar.

The church, located on Akhtamar Island, also known as Akdamar, Aghtamar and Ahtamar, in Lake Van, was built between 915 and 921 A.D. by architect Bishop Manuel, under the supervision of Gagik I Ardzruni, an Armenian king.

It was included in the UNESCO Tentative List of World Heritage on April 13, 2015.

“Akhtamar Church represents a unique accomplishment in Christian architecture, displaying for the first time sculpted imagery on the exterior of a church in such an elaborate profusion,” the UNESCO website said.

Muzaffer Aktug, Van provincial director of culture and tourism, told Anadolu Agency that the church deserved to be included in the permanent list of UNESCO.

“Around 83,000 people visited the island in the first seven months of this year,” Aktug said.

He added that efforts were underway to get the church on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

Akhtamar Church, which was opened as a monument museum in 2007 after being restored for two years with a 4-billion-lira (around $3 billion in 2005) budget allocated for the project.

The church has been hosting annual religious ceremonies organized by the Armenian Patriarchate of Istanbul once a year since 2010.

The first Divine Liturgy was served in the church on 19 September 2010 after 95 years of break. However, the failure of Turkish authorities to place a cross atop the church before the service sparked protests by Armenians all over the world. Eventually, a cross was hoisted on the dome of Akhtamar Church on 30 September.
