ANCA-WR Urges Voter Registration in California

May 24, 2016 By administrator

vote registrationAs the deadline to register to vote for the California Primary Elections approaches, Elen Asatryan, the Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region issued a letter encouraging voter registration and participation in the Primary Election on June 7.

Below is the text of that letter, titled “A forced to be reckoned with…” in reference to a Los Angeles Times article that called the Armenian-American constituency “a force to be reckoned with.”

Friends,

That subject line says it all. On Friday the LA Times ran a story detailing how the Armenian American vote, led by the ANCA-WR and Hye Votes COULD be key to the 43rd Assembly District race between our highly qualified Ardy Kassakhian and the CCSA backed Laura Friedman, the same organization founded by the current head of the Magnolia charter schools linked to Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen and his movement.

While definitely a positive story, especially when numerous seasoned political consultants describe our community as “a force to be reckoned with,” or “playing at a different level,” there was one key word to focus on: “COULD”

In the end, “COULD” doesn’t count. There is only one word that counts: “WILL”.

Our community WILL be the deciding vote in the 43rd Assembly, the 5th LA County Supervisors, and the 25th State Senate districts by electing Ardy Kassakhian, Ara Najarian and Anthony Portantino respectively, if we take a stand.

We WILL be a force to be reckoned with and we WILL continue to play at a different level because we have people like you, but only if you show up to the front lines.

Election Day is two weeks away, we need you now.

If you’re not registered to vote, register by 11:59pm on Monday, May 23rd. If you are registered, MAKE SURE TO VOTE by either sending in your vote-by-mail ballot today or VOTE ON TUESDAY, JUNE 7th.

Our strength is in our UNITY and making our COLLECTIVE VOICE heard. Spread the word by making sure all your friends and family are registered and ready to vote. We cannot let the special interests silence our community.

As our Chair Nora Hovsepian wrote to you on Friday, the special interests are spending over 1 million dollars in negative and dirty campaign tactics to try to buy the 43rd CA Assembly district seat, but when all is said and done – you hold the power of the outcome with your vote.

The time to act is now.

All election details are available at ANCAWR.org/2016elections

Let’s Rock the HyeVote!

In Common Cause,

Elen Asatryan

Executive Director

P.S- Our staff and volunteers are working around the clock to register community members to vote and get the vote out. Please also take some time to stop by the campaign office to help out, Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday noon to 6 p.m. We can use all the helping hands we can get.

YEREVAN (News.am)—A regular meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council was held on May 20 in Yerevan to discuss economic cooperation between the coalition’s member states.

The Prime Minster of Armenia, Hovik Abrahamyan, welcomed those presented and noted the positive dynamics in the establishment of a common market of goods and services at the current stage of the Eurasian Economic Union’s (EAEU) development.

Abrahamyan also spoke about expansion of cooperation in international and other formats, as well as the closer trade and economic cooperation of EAEU with separate states, enabling to raise the EAEU development level.

In this context, Abrahamyan considered cooperation with China as one of the key issues on the meeting agenda. According to him, the establishment of legal framework of cooperation between EAEU and China will enable to not only increase the volume of trade, but also involve investments for large infrastructure projects and diversify logistical opportunities. The Prime Minster stressed the importance of the work aimed at establishing China’s Silk Road Economic Belt.

“Having a historical experience, and being the only EAEU country to have land border with Iran, Armenia is ready to implement that project,” Abrahamyan said.

The meeting also spoke about the formation of common markets in the EAEU, whose activity will enable to eliminate the obstacles on the way to the movement of goods, as well as increase the speed and volume of economic cooperation between the states.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev highlighted that regular meetings are imperative in the integration processes and solving the issues set before them. He considered it necessary to reinforce the legal framework of the Union, fully ensure the free movement of goods, services, capital and persons, eliminate the obstacles and limitations, as well as form common markets in key areas of economy.

Medvedev also attached importance to the speedy adoption of the EAEU Customs Code in order to ensure clear, foreseeable and favorable legal framework for the business community. He noted that it is necessary to develop trade and economic ties with the key partners, including China, Vietnam, Southeastern Asia and other states.

Kazakhstan’s Prime Minster Karim Massimov attached importance to the trade between EAEU and states such as India, Egypt, Iran, etc.

In his speech, Belarus Prime Minister, Andrei Kobyakov, considered formation of common markets of oil and oil products a priority, attaching importance to the adoption of the Eurasian Union Customs Code.

The session also addressed this issue, and suggested implementation of the provisions of the report on coordinated transportation policy, draft decisions of the Eurasian Economic Commission, etc.

During the meeting, Kyrgyzstan’s Prime Minister Sooronbai Zheenbekov stressed that targeted and consistent work with the EAEU countries is a key direction.

As a result of the session, the aforementioned documents, which strengthen the economic cooperation between the member states, were approved and signed. The document on the negotiations on signing a trade and economic agreement between EAEU member states and China was also signed.

The next session of the Eurasian Economic Commission will be held on August 12 in Sochi.

May 23, 2016 By administrator

Aznavor BirthdayMonday, May 23, a special effervescence moderated the County Council to honor Shows Bouches-du-Rhône Marseilles. We had to award the Charles Price Aznavour 2016, as part of the Book Festival Franco-Armenian literary prize awarded to a book on Armenian themes, an initiative of Richard Findykian, Deputy Mayor of the 9th and 10th arrondissements Marseille and Aix Marseille Provence metropolitan Advisor.

They were 5 to apply for this award:

- Hélène Kosseian for “Armenia in the heart of Memory” (Editions du Rocher)
- Valerie Toranian for the “Alien” (Flammarion)

- Vincent Duclert for “France against the Armenian Genocide” (Fayard)
- and Gaya Guerian for “The Armenian” (XO Editions)

And so it is Valérie Toranian (1), accompanied by Franz-Olivier Giesbert, happy, excited and “overwhelmed by this city of Marseille that greeted his grandmother there almost a hundred years,” which won the majority of votes for publishing 2016 Price Charles Aznavour handed over by the President of the departmental Council of the Bouches-du-Rhône, Martine Vassal, with congratulations from Charles Aznavour who was celebrating his 92th birthday the day before.

Ceremony

Highly anticipated by the 500 people present, Charles Aznavour appeared at 11h 15, hand cane sugar under thunderous applause, before receiving the hands of the president of the County Council, Martine Vassal, the Honorary Medal department, attended by many elected Consul of Armenia in Marseille, Samuel Lalayan, and Guy Teissier MP.

Martine Vassal has paid tribute to the global purveyor of French chanson, while welcoming the Armenian community for its dynamism and condemning, without ambiguity, the Azerbaijani aggression against Nagorno Karabakh in the night of 1 April. So she called France to “ask the independence of Nagorno Karabakh, Armenian and Christian land.”

Charles Aznavour has meanwhile said his “tenderness and nostalgia to this corner of France (Marseille).

Before being awarded the Prix Charles Aznavour, the children of the college hamazkayin interpreted with two French-Armenian singers, Marianne and Frank Neri Ohanessian “They fell” and “For you Armenia”.

n a particularly laudatory speech, not absent from humor, to address the inevitable world-renowned artist, Richard Findykian hailed the exceptional career of the man who is the pride of millions of diaspora Armenians, while touting the taste of Olive oil produced by the artist in his property in Mouriès, near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, titling it “the Merchant fruit and vegetable Mouriès” A visibly delighted that aside Charles.

In turn, Guy Teissier, unwavering support of the Armenian cause, denounced the Azeri aggression and said it would shortly submit to the National Assembly a motion for the recognition of independence of Nagorno Karabakh. He has also spoken to the recognition by Turkey of the Armenian genocide, not to honor the Turkish intellectuals in their fight alongside the Armenians.

On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Armenian-French Marseille, Richard Findykian delivers the honorary diplomas to Martine Vassal and Guy Teissier

In this narrative that runs through the century, Valerie Toranian wrote the novel of life, or rather lives of Aravni: the young girl fleeing the Armenian genocide in 1915 until the grandmother also loving qu’intransigeante that she became, she gives her existence impacted by history a universal dimension and honors this grandmother “foreign” to the most beautiful way possible.

Canada Beats Finland 2-0, Becomes 2016 Ice Hockey World Champion

May 22, 2016 By administrator

Canada hokey win 2016

(CBC) Connor McDavid’s first goal of the world hockey championship proved to be golden.

McDavid’s goal in the first period stood as the winner as Canada successfully defended its world championship title with a 2-0 win over Finland in the tournament final.

The 19-year-old Edmonton Oilers centre had registered eight assists in the first nine games of the tournament, but was one of just two Canadian forwards not to have recorded a goal coming into the gold-medal game.

McDavid ended his drought at the 11:24 mark of the first period, driving to the net and deking out sprawling Finnish netminder Mikko Koskinen.

Matt Duchene added an empty-net goal with one second left on the clock to seal the win.

Cam Talbot made 16 saves for his tournament-leading fourth shutout.

Canada came ready to play on Sunday, registering the first seven shots of the game before the Finns fought back with several good chances late in the first period.

Talbot, determined to bounce back from a sub-par personal performance in a 4-0 loss to Finland in the preliminary round, made big saves on Patrik Laine, Jussi Jokinen and Jarmo Koskiranta to help send the Canadians into their dressing room with a one-goal lead at the end of 20 minutes.

Canucks ruin Finns perfect record

In a hard-hitting second period, Canada outshot the Finns by a margin of 13-4. The best Finnish chances came with Mark Scheifele serving a slashing penalty late in the period, when Talbot stopped Koskiranta on the doorstep, then denied Laine as he shot the puck while streaking down the right wing.

In the third, Canada took a page from the playbook of the Finns, who had allowed just eight goals in nine games heading into the final. Canada shut down the opposition with strong defensive play, limiting quality Finnish scoring chances.

Koskinen made 31 saves for the Finns.

Finland came into the final undefeated with a 9-0 record and had a chance to become the first nation ever to win the world under-18 championship, world junior championship and world championship in the same year, but fell one game short.

Canada is the first repeat gold medallist at the world championship since Russia won back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009. Canada’s last back-to-back wins came in 2003 and 2004.

With his new gold medal around his neck, Canadian captain Corey Perry became the 27th player to join the esteemed Triple Gold Club, adding a world championship gold medal to his two Olympic golds from 2010 and 2014 and his 2007 Stanley Cup. Perry also won gold at the 2005 world junior championship.

Perry joined an elite group of Canadian hockey players including Sidney Crosby, Patrice Bergeron, Jonathan Toews, Chris Pronger, Scott Niedermayer, Brendan Shanahan, Joe Sakic and Rob Blake.

Russia wins bronze

In the bronze-medal game earlier on Sunday, Russia got three points each from Sergei Mozyakin, Artemi Panarin and Pavel Datsyuk in a 7-2 rout of the United States.

Panarin said Russia had played with more freedom after a weight of expectation was lifted following its semifinal defeat to Finland on Saturday.

“I think we just relaxed today,” said Panarin, a Calder Trophy finalist. “Until now … the pressure was serious.”

The U.S. led 30-29 in shots, but Russian goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky produced some impressive saves to protect the lead.

Frank Vatrano scored both goals for the U.S.

“This one stings. Obviously, you don’t like to go out on a losing note,” forward Nick Foligno said. “They just played off their emotion and their power and we didn’t really have an answer.”

In my youth one of my important meetings was with the Armenian composer Guenady Astsatourian who enjoyed a good reputation in the Crimea. He taught me the basics of jazz (…) I became member of the family, I went with them to the Armenian parties … I also had the chance to know Djivan Gasparyan I admire . Just a few months I sang with legendary composer Michel Legrand. My close friend, Armen Kostantian is the duduk player of my song “1944”. It two years ago I gave a concert in Yerevan. When the plane landed in Armenia, I felt at once that I was home. STOCKHOLM (AP) — The Latest on the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest (all times local):

11:25 p.m.

Justin Timberlake has made a guest appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest, performing his latest hit “Can’t Stop the Feeling” in the interval before the voting results are announced

Before his performance at Stockholm’s Globe arena, the American singer and songwriter said he had watched the previous two editions of the competition.

“I know you must have been nervous, but you all represented your countries so very well,” Timberlake told the 26 finalists in the competition as the voting by professional judges and TV viewers got under way.

____

11:10 p.m.

Let the voting begin. With Armenia’s Iveta Mukuchyan singing “LoveWave,” all 26 entries in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest final have completed their performances.

Professional judges and TV viewers across Europe will now cast votes for their 10 favorite acts. The points will be added up and a winner will be proclaimed at the end of the show at Stockholm’s Globe Arena.

New this year is that the votes from the judges and the viewers will be presented separately, a move meant to keep the drama going right till the end.

____

9:50 p.m.

Fans have come to Stockholm for the Eurovision Song Contest from all over the world.

Mathias Fredholm, a 45-year-old sales manager and Sai Dashani, a 36-year-old consultant, came all the way from Hong Kong to watch the show.

Dashani says Saturday “we’ve been following the Eurovision Song Contest for 10 or so years, maybe more,”

Fredholm added: “This is the fifth time that we go to Eurovision finals, so it’s great.”

Australian Max Manion-Sharrock, 22, said he was “pumped and I’m expecting Australia top two definitely.”

The show is so popular in Australia that the country has been invited to compete for the second consecutive year. South-Korean born Dami Im is representing Australia with the song “Sound of Silence.”

9:20 p.m.

Belgium’s Laura Tesoro is the first competitor to take the stage at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Dressed in a glittery silver outfit, the 19-year-old Belgian opened the contest with “What’s the Pressure,” a funky tune with a bass riff reminiscent of Queen’s “Another one Bites the Dust.”

The contestants for the 26 countries taking part in the final entered Stockholm’s Globe Arena on a cat walk to wild cheers from the enthusiastic audience.

___

9 p.m.

The director of the TV alliance that produces the Eurovision Song Contest says the show’s message of unity is particularly significant at a time when Europe is seeing its internal borders returning.

European Broadcasting Union Director-General Ingrid Deltenre told The Associated Press before Saturday’s final that the togetherness the event brings is important for a continent in the midst of a refugee crisis and talk of Britain’s possible withdrawal from the European Union.

She says “you have reactions in Europe which are very polarizing … we are sending out a signal. It’s a signal about tolerance, about openness, about diversity.”

The EBU is an alliance of public service broadcasters in Europe that produces the show. This year’s event is being held in Stockholm’s Globe Arena and will be broadcast live to an estimated 200 million people in Europe, Asia, Australia and the United States.
