US House of Representatives John Boehner paid a surprise visit to Ankara on Tuesday #armeniangenocide

April 15, 2014 By administrator

15 April 2014, Tuesday /ANKARA, TODAY’S ZAMAN
Speaker of the US House of Representatives John Boehner paid a surprise visit to Ankara on Tuesday to hold high level meetings with Turkish officials.
BoehnerBoehner held meetings with President Abdullah Gül, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Parliament Speaker Cemil Çiçek. His visit came at a time when two resolutions on the “Armenian genocide” are on the agenda of the US House of Representatives and the US Senate.

Four US Congressmen introduced a resolution to the US House of Representatives on April 4, calling on US President Barack Obama to encourage a Turkish-Armenian relationship based on Turkey’s “acknowledgement of the Armenian Genocide,” in a move parallel to a resolution which was introduced to the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee and passed on April 10.

Following his meeting with Çiçek, Boehner said that the US Congress is unlikely to get involved in “Armenian Genocide” issue, stressing that Turkey has no reason to worry since it is not up to the US Congress to rewrite history.

Çiçek described the Armenia issue as defamation against Turkey as well as a major burden in US-Turkey relations. He also claimed that Turkey is ready to face its history, yet if parliaments make decisions on historical issues, it may hamper bilateral relations between the countries involved.

US Senator Robert Menendez, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and US Senator Mark Kirk introduced the resolution to the Senate committee on April 3, urging the Senate to remember and observe the anniversary of the “Armenian Genocide” on April 24, 2014.

“The Armenian Genocide is a horrifying factual reality that can never be denied,” Chairman Menendez said when he introduced the resolution. “This resolution reaffirms in the strongest terms that we will always remember this tragedy and honor the memory of innocent Armenian men, women and children who were killed and expelled from their homeland. The Armenian Genocide must be taught, recognized, and commemorated to prevent the re-occurrence of similar atrocities from ever happening again,” he said.

The resolution also states that Obama should ensure that US foreign policy “reflects appropriate understanding and sensitivity concerning issues related to human rights, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing and genocide documented in the United States record relating to the Armenian Genocide.”

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said on Tuesday that Turkey will respond if the resolution is passed by the US Senate and reiterated remarks made during a recent visit to Mexico that the government does not expect such possibility. Last week, Davutoğlu called on US authorities to prevent the deterioration of US-Turkey relations after the resolution was passed by the US Senate committee.

Iranian historian on recognition of Armenian Genocide by U.S. Senate

April 15, 2014 By administrator

“Armenian Genocide issue has become a headache for Turkish government,” Abbas Ghare Aghachlu, professor at Turkish “Girisun” university, has told to Iranian IRNA news agency.

Iranian HistorianIranian scientist has touched upon the resolution of recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the foreign relations commission of the U.S. Senate, and has noted, “Previously parliaments of 36 countries had recognized the Armenian Genocide. Regarding the growing tension between Ankara and Washington it is possible that the U.S. Senate will officially recognize the Armenian Genocide implemented by the Ottoman Turkey.”

Abbas Ghare Aghachlu also added, “Before the Jewish lobby was managing to hinder such drafts. The situation changed after the “Mavi Marmara” ship incident. I don’t think that the Jewish lobby will support Turkey as it did before. If the Armenian, Jewish and Greek lobbies unite, the U.S. Senate will approve the Armenian Genocide resolution.”

Coming up to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide the Iranian scientist has noted, “It will be hard for Turkey till 2015; the presidential; and parliamentary elections on one hand and the Syrian crises on another.”

My daughter cried for his head off. I gave him my own hat. Weapon asked. We also have no weapon. They took their mobile phones. They stuck us in that farm. ‘Do not be afraid of our other Armenians have no business. Our troubles with Alevis. Flame, though I will kill my father, ‘they said. They put on the return path to the Catholic Church. ‘You will see the church cleaned. We downloaded a single cross, ‘they said. ‘The church was dirty, “he asked. They did not answer. Turkish Snake-Oil salesman FM is Angry Calls US Senate Panel ‘Inept’

April 12, 2014 By administrator

SYRIA-CRISIS/TURKEYANKARA—Angered at Thursday’s passage of the Armenian Genocide resolution by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the Turkish Foreign Ministry lashed out at the legislative body condemning the adoption of the measure.

“The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee has acted beyond its position, competence and responsibility by adopting by majority vote a hastily and ineptly prepared draft resolution (S.Res.410). We reject this attempt at a political exploitation that distorts history and law, and we condemn those who led this prejudiced initiative, which is devoid of any legal ground,” said an official foreign ministry statement.

“In actuality, how Turks and Armenians, as the owners of this common history, can together, through dialogue and empathy, reach a just memory of the tragic events of 1915, which occurred during the great human sufferings of World War I, is already being examined thoroughly and in all its dimensions. In this context, our proposal to establish a Joint Historical Commission, also reflected in the Turkish-Armenian protocols, remains on the agenda,” added the foreign ministry statement.

“In the forthcoming period, it is essential that the U.S. Congress engages in efforts aimed at strengthening our historic alliance and partnership, which are more important than ever in the present circumstances, instead of damaging Turkish-American bilateral ties; and that this draft resolution and similar ones are not moved any further in the legislative agenda,” the statement concluded.

On Thursday, by a vote of 12 to 5 the Senate Foreign Relations Committee adopted the Armenian Genocide resolution, which urges Turkey to recognize the Genocide.

Prior to Thursday’s vote, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu held a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday to discuss the resolutions.

“We don’t have a negative expectation [for the outcome of the draft resolution],” Davutoglu told reporters in Ankara Thursday, adding that the two had also discussed developments in Syria and Egypt, reported Hurriyet Daily News.

The Turkish government is taking measures against “initiatives that will bother Turkey. We hope they will not take such an attitude,” he also said.

Syria: UN must condemn deadly twin bombings in Homs:

April 11, 2014 By administrator

Syria has called on the United Nations to condemn the recent terrorist bomb attacks which killed over 20 people, including women and children, in the country’s western city of Homs.

358085_Homs-BlastsIn letters to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the Security Council, the Syrian Foreign Ministry criticized the world body’s “continued silence” on the crimes perpetrated by foreign-backed terrorist groups against Syrians, SANA reported on Thursday.

“The government of Syrian Arab Republic calls on the Security Council to condemn that terrorist crime which claimed the lives of scores of Syrian innocents [as well as] other terrorist crimes that shed the Syrians’ blood,” said the letters.

The letters also said the Security Council should “punish” Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey for supporting the Takfiri terrorists operating against Syria and turning a blind eye to the UN body’s resolutions on counterterrorism.

On April 9, at least 25 people were killed and more than 100 others injured when two car bomb attacks targeted a commercial street in the central part of Homs.

Later on the same day, foreign-backed militants reportedly shot and killed 14 people, including women and children, in the city’s Karm al-Zeitoun neighborhood.

Homs has been the scene of frequent attacks by foreign-sponsored extremist groups since the start of the deadly militancy in Syria some three years ago.

Reports say more than 150,000 people have so far been killed and millions of others displaced because of the ongoing violence plaguing the Arab state.

President Bashar al-Assad has vowed that his country would strike terror “with an iron fist.” He has also pledged that Syria will emerge “victorious” and “more powerful” from the foreign-backed crisis.

n_64909_1The Turkish Foreign Ministry has condemned a resolution that recognizes the 1915-16 killings of Ottoman Armenians as a genocide, which passed at the U.S. Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee on April 10 by bipartisan vote.

The ministry warned the U.S. Congress not to “harm bilateral ties” between the two countries by carrying the resolution to the legislative agenda.

“It’s important that the U.S. Congress does not carry this resolution or similar ones to the legislative agenda, but rather makes efforts to reinforce our historical alliance and partnership, which have an importance more than ever in the current conjuncture, instead of harming bilateral relations with non-constructive initiatives,” the ministry’s statement released on April 11 said.

The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee on April 10 passed a resolution describing the killings of Armenians as a genocide, clearing the way for the resolution to be voted on in the Senate.

Ankara said it refuted the “political misuses that warps history and the law,” adding that it “condemned the pioneers of this initiative, which is biased and lacking in legal basis.”

The U.S. Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee “exceeded its authority and responsibility” by passing an “unserious resolution prepared hastily and unskillfully,” the statement also said.

The ministry again cited Turkey’s proposal to establish a joint history committee in order to research the 1915 incidents.

Hurriyet daily news

An “Armenian genocide” resolution has passed the U.S. Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee on April 10 by bipartisan voice.

Bob Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey who chairs the Foreign Relations Committee, and Mark Kirk, a Republican from Illinois, had presented the bill last week.

“Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, during which 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turkey … To honor the survivors and the memory of those lost, and to lead globally on human rights, the United States should finally join the European Union and 11 of our NATO allies in officially recognizing the Armenian Genocide,” Kirk had said.

Armenians say up to 1.5 million of their forebears were killed in 1915 and 1916 by the forces of Ottoman Empire.

Turkey disputes the figure, arguing that only 500,000 died, and denies this was genocide, ascribing the toll to fighting and starvation during World War I.

“This resolution reaffirms in the strongest terms that we will always remember this tragedy and honor the memory of innocent Armenian men, women and children who were killed and expelled from their homeland. The Armenian Genocide must be taught, recognized, and commemorated to prevent the re-occurrence of similar atrocities from ever happening again,” Menendez had argued.

Having passed the 18-member committee with 12 ayes and 5 nays, the bill will now come to a 100-member floor vote. The first article of the bill calls “to remember and observe the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on April 24, 2014.”

Although U.S. President Barack Obama is against the passage of such a bill, an expert on Turkey told daily Hürriyet that the recent turbulence in Washington-Ankara bilateral relations might affect the administration’s expected efforts to stop the bill.

Moroever, some new faces in the administration, like U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN Samantha Power and National Security Advisor Susan Rice, can tip the balance with their track record of supporting pro-Armenian bills.

Last week, four U.S. Congressmen also introduced a resolution calling on President Obama to encourage a Turkish-Armenian relationship based on Turkey’s acknowledgement that the 1915-16 killings of Armenians by Ottoman forces constituted genocide.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu held a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry late April 9 discussing the recent Armenian draft resolutions. “We don’t have a negative expectation [for the outcome of the draft resolutions],” Davutoğlu told reporters in Ankara on April 10.

US Senate committee passes ‘Armenian Genocide’ resolution

10 April 2014, Thursday / TODAYSZAMAN.COM, İSTANBUL
US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has passed a senate resolution commemorating the “Armenian Genocide,” clearing the way for the resolution to be voted in the Senate.

The 12 Senators voted for the resolution in the 18-member committee, while five Senators voted against it. One Senator abstained during the voting.

US Senator Robert Menendez, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and US Senator Mark Kirk introduced the senate resolution last week.

The resolution calls to remember and observe the anniversary of the “Armenian Genocide” on April 24, 2014.

It says President Barack Obama should work toward an equitable, constructive, stable, and durable Armenian-Turkish relationship that includes the full acknowledgment by the Turkish government of the facts about the “Armenian Genocide.”

The resolution notes that Obama should ensure that the foreign policy of the US reflects appropriate understanding and sensitivity concerning issues related to human rights, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, and genocide documented in the US record relating to the “Armenian Genocide.”

On Thursday, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said that he spoke with US Secretary of State John Kerry late on Wednesday to discuss the resolution on the “Armenian genocide.”

Speaking to journalists in Ankara before departing on a visit to Japan on Thursday, Davutoğlu said that he does not expect any steps to be taken with regards to the resolution by Obama or his administration that would bother Turkey.
