Greece: Pope brings 12 Syrian refugees back with him after Lesbos visit

In a clear signal to Europe, Pope Francis has allowed three refugee families to accompany him on his charter plane. Francis was on the Greek island of Lesbos to shed light on the refugees’ plight.

The Vatican said on Saturday that Francis’ decision was a “gesture of welcome” for the hundreds of thousands of refugees that have arrived on the Greek island of Lesbos as they flee war and poverty in the Middle East, Central Asia and Afghanistan.

Three families – two from Damascus and one from the “Islamic State”-held Deir el-Zour – accompanied the pope on his charter plane to Italy. The group of refugees totaled 12 people, including the six children.

“Today I renew my heartfelt plea for responsibility and solidarity in the face of this tragic situation,” Francis said.

A ‘common humanity’

Lots were drawn to decide which individuals would be allowed to go with the pope, reported DW correspondent Bernd Riegert, who was on the scene as the plane departed.

The refugee families, which include six children, are to be taken in by the Vatican and will be initially cared for by the Rome-based lay community of Sant’Egidio.

An emotional meeting

Overwhelmed by the Francis’ visit, refugees reportedly sobbed and fell to their knees in his presence. Some even reportedly asked to be blessed by him.

After the visit, Francis had lunch with some of the refugees and then, along with the head of the Orthodox Christians, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, and the head of the Orthodox Church of Greece, Athens Archbishop Ieronymos II, signed a declaration calling for their protection.

Refugees were also seen holding signs emblazoned with slogans such as “Pope you are our hope,” “please save Yazidi people,” “we are also human” and “Welcome Pope Francis.”

Greek coast guard confronts Turkish smuggler with dead children migrant bodies

January 19, 2016 By administrator

The Greek coast guard has confronted a Turkish human smuggler with the dead bodies of three migrant children who were in his capsized boat “as a lesson,” while charging the trafficker with 120 years of imprisonment.

The smuggler, identified only as Özkan A., was trafficking 23 migrants, including six children and five women, to the Greek island of Samos when his boat capsized off Turkey’s Aegean coast.

While Özkan A. and 20 of the migrants were rescued by the search and rescue foundation Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS), three children were retrieved dead. According to reports, two of the children were four years old and the other was two years old.

After the MOAS rescue boat docked at Samos Island, Greek coast guard teams entered the boat and handcuffed Özkan A., before forcing him to kneel and confront the bodies of the children who lost their lives.

Video footage of the incident has emerged showing the smuggler as he sits and cries watching the toddlers as they are placed inside coffins.

Özkan A. has confessed to being paid $3,000 each time he smuggled a boat of migrants to Greece, saying he previously trafficked migrants to the islands of Lesbos and Samos, Doğan News Agency reported.

He now faces up to 120 years in prison, reports added.

Daily Hürriyet contacted the father of Özkan A., who lives in the Milas district of Turkey’s southwestern Muğla province.

The father claimed that his son had behavioral disorders and psychological problems, for which he had received medical treatment until 2013.

“He [Özkan A.] has the intelligence of a six-year-old,” he said, adding that his son had left home and phoned the family on Jan. 13 but they had not heard from him since.

Greek islands in the Aegean Sea saw more than 800,000 migrants – many of them refugees fleeing war-torn Syria – land on their shores from Turkey in 2015, their first EU stop on a journey to new lives in Germany, Sweden and elsewhere.

Turkey itself has taken in over 2 million refugees from neighboring Syria where a conflict has been continuing since the early days of 2011.

Syria refugees resort to Istanbul streets (Video)

November 21, 2013 By administrator

Hundreds of refugees fleeing the crisis in Syria have poured into the Turkish city of Istanbul with many of them sleeping on the streets, Press TV reports.

Screen-Shot-2013-11-21-at-3.55.32-AMSome of the refugees live in makeshift tents, while some others have no shelter at all.

The refugees decided not to stay in the several refugee camps on the Turkish border with Syria.

“We are with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. We’ll follow him to the end and we will get Syria back,” a Syrian refugee told Press TV.

Most of the refugees said they arrived only a few months ago and that they are scared to sleep in the refugee camps along the border because of their support for the Syrian government. They said that they would rather sleep on the street than be killed in the camps.

Turkey is among the countries that support anti-government insurgents inside Syria.

A man at a park in Istanbul, where the refugees were stationed, threatened to break Press TV’s camera as he said several news outlets had been there before and lied about their condition, claiming that the refugees were the supporters of foreign-backed militants operating inside Syria.

According to statistics compiled by the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and a total of 7.8 million of others displaced due to nearly three years of crisis in Syria.
