Sydney man to trek Mount Ararat in Turkey to fundraising for Armenian children in Syria

An Armenian-Australian is preparing to trek Mount Ararat in Turkey, to help raise funds for the thousands of Armenian-heritage children caught up in the violence in Syria.

It is estimated more than 15,000 Syrians of Armenian background have found refuge in Armenia. Reported abc.net.au

Sydneysider Sassoon Grigorian, who leaves for the trek next week, said the it was also in homage to the Australian effort after the Armenian genocide 100 years ago, when Australia was the first to set up an orphanage for refugees in Lebanon.

Mr Grigorian said a small team was making the trek for charity Mission Armenia and United Nations refugee agency UNHCR.

He said the Syrian-Armenian families were doing it tough.

“So even though they’re of Armenian heritage they’re moving to Armenia, which is a completely different country and [they have to make] a lot of major adjustments so they need all sorts of help,” Mr Grigorian said.

He said climbing Mount Ararat — which can be seen from Armenia — had been a lifetime dream.

“Mount Ararat is a very symbolic mountain. It’s the highest mountain in Turkey but for Armenians it has a very significant influence,” he said.

“It’s supposedly the resting place of Noah’s ark and it’s basically a national symbol for Armenians around the world.”

Historian Peter Stanley, from the University of New South Wales in Canberra, said the trek symbolised the close relationship between Australia and Armenia.

“I think it’s an extraordinary throwback to a huge Australian effort to relieve the sufferings of the victims of the Armenian genocide during the First World War, but into the 1920s and 30s,” Professor Stanley said.

“There were church men and women involved right across Australia, especially from the evangelical churches, but the Anglicans and the Catholics were also active.

“But it went beyond the churches too, there were Australian humanitarians who were deeply committed to the idea of the league of nations coming out of the tragedy of the Great War of course.”

He said there was a wide variety of people involved.

“War widows — a woman called Edith Glanville whose son was killed on Gallipoli, she went to help the Armenians,” Professor Stanley said.

“Jessie Webb, who is famous in Australian women’s history, became very active in supporting the league of nations.

“Ex-war nurses — a woman called Isabelle Hotan who went to look after refugee camps, and in fact there was an Australian orphanage in Beirut supported for years by Australian fundraising.”

Mr Grigorian said his children’s great-grandfathers were saved in that very orphanage.

“Two of those survivors were my children’s great-grandparents — and a lot of funding was raised from Australia to help those orphans,” he said.

“In fact there was an orphanage in current day Lebanon which my children’s great-grandfathers went to.”

Mr Grigorian said many Australians of today might not be aware of that history.

“I remember speaking to the late Gough Whitlam and he told me when I was at a community event ‘my mother used to tell me when I was having dinner’, he would say, ‘remember the starving Armenians’, ” he said.

“So this is something that many Australians from that generation who just came back from World War I, despite the difficulties they were in, found it within themselves to conduct this major humanitarian relief campaign.”

BREAKING NEWS: Police Storm Sydney Cafe Where Hostages Are Held

Heavily armed police in Sydney stormed a cafe early Tuesday where an armed self-proclaimed sheikh had held hostages for more than 16 hours. report NYT
Live television footage at the scene showed intense flashes of gunfire and the sound of loud ammunition rounds fired. Police were racing into the building with weapons drawn.
Just before police appeared to enter the building at least six hostages were seen running from the cafe.

Earlier, the police confirmed that the hostage-taker was Man Haron Monis, a man with a criminal record who called himself Sheikh Haron. Australian media reports quoted the man’s former lawyer as saying he was acting alone. But it was unclear whether the gunman had accomplices.

The siege had transfixed Australia since Monday morning, when the gunman took control of the Lindt Chocolate Cafe in central Sydney, with an unknown number of employees and customers trapped inside. The man was carrying a black flag with white Arabic script similar to those used by Islamic militants on other continents, and the flag was later displayed in the window of the cafe.

Five people, including two cafe employees, had fled by 7 p.m. Monday, but it was not clear whether the assailant had allowed them to leave or they had escaped.

Helicopters hovered over the city, the train network was temporarily stopped and strategic buildings — including the nearby Sydney Opera House, the New South Wales Parliament, the state library, law courts and the Reserve Bank — were evacuated or shut down. Traffic was stopped on part of the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

According to The Age, a national newspaper, Mr. Monis was free on bail in two separate criminal cases. He was charged in November 2013 with being an accessory before and after the fact in the murder of his ex-wife, Noleen Hayson Pal, who was stabbed and set on fire in an apartment in Werrington.

Sydney siege: Hostages held in central cafe

December 14, 2014 By administrator

hostageAt least one gunman has taken several people hostage at a cafe in the centre of the Australian city of Sydney.

Pictures on Australian television have shown at least three people with their hands up against a window, and a black flag with Arabic writing.

Hundreds of armed police have sealed off the normally busy Martin Place in Sydney’s central business district.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has described the incident as “deeply concerning”.

“All Australians should be reassured that our law enforcement and security agencies are well trained and equipped and are responding in a thorough and professional manner,” he said in a statement.

A National Security Committee of Cabinet had been convened for Monday morning, the PM’s office said.

New South Wales police have asked people to avoid the area and to stay away from windows.

Police have also said that they are dealing with an “incident” at the Sydney Opera House, which has been evacuated.

Local media are reporting that a suspicious package was found there on Monday, though it was unclear whether it was connected to the Martin Place incident.

Many people were arriving at work as the area was shut down

An Australian Broadcasting Corporation reporter said that gunfire had been heard at the scene, the Lindt chocolate cafe – but this has not been confirmed.

No injuries have been reported from the incident, according to a police spokesperson.

Australia has been facing a growing terror threat in recent months, in part connected to the fight against the Islamic State militant group in Syria and Iraq.

About 70 Australians are believed to be fighting in the Middle East while another 20 have returned home.

In September, the largest anti-terror raids in Australian history were carried out in Sydney and Brisbane after intelligence emerged that people were planning to carry out random attacks on Australian soil.

Only one person was charged with terror offences.

Anti-terror legislation was passed in October, which critics said was too severe. Mr Abbott has said the threat meant “the delicate balance between freedom and security may have to shift”.

The Lindt Cafe is located in a plaza in the heart of the city’s financial and shopping district that is usually packed with shoppers at this time of year.

It is home to the state premier’s office and the headquarters of two of the nation’s largest banks.

The state parliament house is also only a few streets away.

Sydney to host lecture on destroyed khachkars of Nakhichevan

July 9, 2014 By administrator

Sydney will host a lecture on destroyed khachkars of Nakhichevan Friday, July 11, Armenian National Committee of Australia reported.

180606-SydneyThe 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide Commemorative Committee (100th AGCC) announced a lecture evening with special guest, Dr. Judith Crispin.

Crispin is a Director at Manning Clark House (MCH), a noted and respected Australian ‘think tank’ based in Canberra, named after the leading historian, Manning Clark.

In November 2013, MCH began working on a ground-breaking project to digitally recreate the ancient Armenian cemetery at Djulfa. The Djulfa cemetery, which is located in the border area between Iran and Nakhichevan, was once home to more than 10,000 khachkars, traditional Armenian cross-stones, which dated back to the 15th century.

In 2005, the military of Azerbaijan began a systematic campaign to finally rid the Julfa cemetery of all the Armenian khachkars by conducting destroying operations in the area. The international community condemned these attacks, however the cemetery could not be salvaged.

A document submitted by an international parliamentary delegation to UNSECO noted that “given the impossibility of any reconstruction of the destroyed site and its khachkars – now literally pulverised – and in consideration of the fact that under the surface there are still the buried bodies of people to whose memory the former khachkars had been erected, we suggest to transform this gross act of out-spoken hatred into a positive step towards confidence-building and reconciliation.”

Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of Australia, Vache Kahramanian, stated: “We are delighted that Manning Clark House has undertaken this remarkable project. As a partner on this project, ANC Australia looks forward to working with Dr. Crispin and her team to make this project a success.”

Crispin will provide graphic evidence from her recent trip to the region, and advise specific details of MCH’s recreation project.

Protest to be held in front of Turkish Consulate in Sydney

April 1, 2014 By administrator

April  1, 2014 – 15:10 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net –  A peaceful protest is to be held in front of the Turkish Consulate in Sydney on Wednesday, April 2, to express the Armenian-Australian 177520community’s solidarity with the Armenian community of Kessab, Syria, and to condemn Turkey’s actions.

On March 21, armed rebel groups attacked the heavily Armenian-populated region of Kessab, Syria, by crossing the Turkish border into Syria. Under the threat of slaughter, the entire Armenian population of the region was forced to flee their homes to neighboring towns, including Latakia and Bassit. Some were not so lucky and have reportedly been taken hostage, while churches and homes have been destroyed.

A demonstration is to be held in Sydney to join with Armenian communities from all around the world in condemning Turkey’s action, which is a continuation of its genocidal policy towards Armenians dating back to 1915, the Armenian National Committee of Australia said.

Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of Australia, Vache Kahramanian, remarked: “This is an important opportunity to the Armenian-Australian community to publicly show their solidarity with the Armenian community of Kessab.”

“In 1915 the Ottoman Turkish rulers orchestrated the Armenian genocide and today, in the 21st century, the current Turkish Government is continuing the same policy against the Armenians in Syria,” Kahramanian added.

Spokesperson for the organizing Armenian Youth Federation of Australia, Aram Tufenkjian, stated: “Today we call on all Armenians, young and old, to join in this important action to hold Turkey accountable.”

SYDNEY, MELBOURNE, Two Events Featuring Genocide Denier Professor Justin McCarthy, has been Canceled

November 21, 2013 By administrator

Jewish body adds voice against Genocide denier McCarthy

justin-mccarthy-american-historian1_1362121360SYDNEY, MELBOURNE—Professor Justin McCarthy, a well funded denier of the Armenian Genocide, has had two planned events in Sydney and Melbourne canceled on the grounds of his unwelcome denialist views.

McCarthy was due to address audiences at the University of Melbourne and at the New South Wales Art Gallery this week, however, each institution revoked McCarthy’s opportunity after learning of his abhorrent denialist views on the Armenian Genocide.

Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia), Vache Kahramanian welcomed the independent decision taken by both institutions.

“Justin McCarthy’s views have no place in Australia and no institution or venue should ever allow a genocide denier to utilise their stage,” said Kahramanian.

“Genocide denial is the final act of genocide against victims and surviving generations. As a proud multicultural nation we should never allow the denigration of the memory of victims of genocide,” Kahramanian added.

McCarthy is due to address a private gathering in Parliament House, Canberra, on November 21st.

ANC Australia has written to all Members of Parliament, informing them of McCarthy’s denalist views and to ensure they do not allow Parliament House to be used as a platform for McCarthy’s denialist views.

Jewish body adds voice against Genocide denier McCarthy
The Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) has released a powerful statement expressing their deep concerns of Professor Justin McCarthy’s upcoming address in Parliament House, Canberra.

In a media release dated 20 November 2013, the ECAJ accepts the “overwhelming view of history scholars that the killing of hundreds of thousands of civilians in these communities was done with genocidal intent.”

The release goes on to address the issue of McCarthy’s upcoming event at Parliament House on 21 November, which the ECAJ says, will mean the institution is “lending his theories the misleading appearance of official approval. In our view, no part of Parliament House should be misused in this way.”

Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia), Vache Kahramanian stated: “We thank the Executive Council of Australian Jewry for their principled position on this important matter. Venues such as Parliament House should never allow genocide deniers to have a stage.”

McCarthy was due to speak at events at the University of Melbourne and the New South Wales Art Gallery but were both canceled by the respective institutions upon learning of McCarthy’s denialist views on the Armenian Genocide.

ANC Australia has written to Laurie Ferguson MP, who booked the venue in Parliament House for the event, to immediately withdraw his name and revoke access to the venue to ensure McCarthy isn’t allowed to spread his denialist views.

The full text of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry media release can be read below:

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry notes the current visit to Australia of the American Professor of history, Justin McCarthy. Professor McCarthy campaigns around the world against the recognition of the Armenian genocide.

Professor McCarthy does not deny that from 1915 to 1923 more than 1 million Armenians, Pontian Greeks and Assyrians, almost all of them civilians, lost their lives at the hands of the Ottoman Caliphate. However, notwithstanding that this slaughter was on a massive scale over a period of years, Professor McCarthy maintains that this loss of life was not systematic and was not carried out with the intention of eradicating these Christian communities, but was an act of war.

The inherent implausibility of this contention raises many questions about the quality of Professor McCarthy’s analysis. The ECAJ accepts the overwhelming view of history scholars that the killing of hundreds of thousands of civilians in these communities was done with genocidal intent.

Whilst freedom of expression and academic freedom require that Professor McCarthy must be at liberty to put forward his theories, the manner in which he does so must not lapse into racial vilification. Professor McCarthy is a guest of Australia and must respect Australia’s laws during his visit.

One of the venues to which Professor McCarthy has been invited to put forward his views, is a room in Parliament House Canberra, thereby lending his theories the misleading appearance of official approval. In our view, no part of Parliament House should be misused in this way.
