Officials present updated plans, gather feedback on Armenian American Museum project

Armenian American Museum project

By Jeff Landa,

Officials for the proposed Armenian American Museum held their first community meeting since announcing the museum’s relocation to downtown Glendale’s Central Park.

In 2016, city officials agreed to carve out an area in the Central Park block for the museum and also used the opportunity to reimagine the space so it could integrate nearby facilities as well as create new public and recreational spaces.

The museum was originally set for construction on a 1.37-acre, city-owned parking lot at Mountain Street and Verdugo Road, across from Glendale Community College and near a residential neighborhood.

However, it was relocated to a more nonresidential area after community pushback.

State Sen. Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) helped secure $3 million for the museum project last year, adding to the already $1 million approved by Gov. Jerry Brown.

The 10 participating organizations that constitute the board of directors and govern the project have already contributed $1 million and collected $1.8 million in 80 individual anonymous donations.

Berdj Karapetian, chairman of the museum’s project development committee, said museum board members hope to raise an additional $2 million by the end of this year, adding that they expect annual operating costs for the museum will total about $1.2 million once it’s open.

Layout plans for the three-story structure include a 300- to 350-seat auditorium on the first floor for performing arts, a still unplanned permanent and rotating exhibition space on the second level and a research learning center as well as a demonstration kitchen on the third floor. The rooftop terrace will include a sculpture garden.

About 20,000 square feet will be dedicated to exhibit space throughout the museum, said lead architect Aram Alajajian with Alajajian Marcoosi Architects Inc.

During the community-feedback portion of the meeting, people raised more questions than concerns. Questions included how much the museum’s admission price will be and who will dictate the theme of the permanent exhibit, but also there were concerns about how officials will compensate for the already limited parking in the area.

According to officials, admission will be free, the museum’s governing committee will decide the narrative for exhibits and the museum will have three levels of underground parking.

Karapetian admitted that the first three community meetings had quite a few negative responses, mostly taking issue with the former proposed location of the museum, but said he was pleased that the meeting on Thursday elicited mostly positive comments about the Central Park relocation.

“We were very pleased at the turnout. It was a good turnout for a community forum of this nature, and we had some very good feedback that will help guide us in finalizing the schematic design and plans for the building,” he said.

Should City Council approve the project some time later this year, officials expect the museum will open by 2023.

July 27, 2017 By administrator

Armenia gold mine projectDozens of residents of a village in Lori province in western Armenia blocked a local road Wednesday to protest against the project of an obscure private company that is considering looking for gold near Of their community.

They fear that the mine project, if implemented, will wreak havoc on the local ecosystem by contaminating the forests and pastures surrounding the village of Ardvi. They claim that the open-cast mines will also frighten tourists who visit the 10th century shrines located in Ardvi.

The company in question, called Miram, has so far disclosed only a few details of its plans to develop a gold mine in the region. It has not yet obtained government approval for the proposed operation.

The Armenian law requires that companies wishing to obtain mining licenses organize public hearings in the communities affected by their operations. Miram planned to hold such a discussion on Wednesday.

The villagers disrupted the procedure by blocking a road leading to Ardvi. “Our gold is our nature,” said one of the angry protesters.

“Their goal is to destroy our village. We will not accept any hearing, “shouted another villager.

The representatives of Miram never showed up. Until now, Arayik Zadoyan – director of a restaurant in the provincial capital Vanadzor – was among the shareholders of the company. The restaurant in question belongs to Vahram Baghdasarian, the parliamentary leader of the Republican Party.

Zadoyan said on Wednesday that he no longer owns shares in Miram. He added that the company is controlled by one of his friends from Russia.

Erdogan’s perilous Project- Buffer Zone inside Syria will not Work; must be rejected by both the US, and its NATO Allies

October 26, 2014 By administrator

Omar Sindi, Washington — Special to Ekurd.net

syriakurd1550The misadventures’ vision by Turkish Authorities could get spiraled out of control of multi-dimensional wars among many regional states’ actors for the regional regimes, currently are in precarious political survivors status, mired Middle East power struggle. Already Iranian regime has raised its objection, Syrian Alawites regime in Damascus along with their proxy Lebanon’s Hezbollah, will consider buffer zone is as an invasion; it should come with no surprise, if Shia’s lead government in Baghdad vehemently opposite the Turkish miscalculations, and Turkish government should not under estimate the ability of over 4 million Kurds who historically living in this land. President Erdogan should think twice, for this illusive vision of buffer zone inside (Rojava) Syrian Kurdistan.

If the proposed project on Kurdish land inside Syria of buffer zone wins support by the Western governments particularly the US; the Kurds will consider this buffer zone quid pro quo of nothing less than the betrayal of the Treaty of Lausanne, Switzerland that materialized on July 1924,where Kurdish people’s right revoked as nation‘s states to exist

Erdogan, whose discernment has darkened his fixation worry of seeing another multi – political parties- Kurds autonomous region created; certainly, Turkey has benefited from autonomous Kurds region in Southern Kurdistan-Iraq cross border trading commodities.

President Erdogan should have no “fear but fear itself”; most likely, he (Mr. Erdogan) wants to reinstitute the domination of Sunnah Arabs on the Kurdish land, just like the racist – Arabization policy in this Area by then Sunnah led Syrian government in early 1950’s through early 1960’s the top architect of this ruction project was Mohammed Talib Hilal then the minister of Post & Telegraph,www.Ekurd.net

the implementation of Arab domination in this area “ethnic cleansing”; however afterward the Baathist regime in Damascus didn’t soothe the darker mood any better. Turkish policy makers out to reassess furthermore unrevealed perilous project, this buffer zone inside Syria, will not be like the Cypress’ invasion in 1974, protecting Turkish minority in that Island.

Over four million Syrian Kurds will consider this buffer zone nothing less than the suppression, and invasion, they will resist like what they are fighting these days in Kobani area. Additionally, international reactions, most likely will be negative feedback to the buffer zone project inside Syria on the Kurdish territory. Turkish Media out let, should tune down its nationalist rhetoric the proposed project of realpolitik -buffer zone inside Syria, most likely will not benefit Turkey, it will destabilize region to further – uncharted territory of multi –dimensional wars. All the people of this region do not deserve reckless vision; just like Zia Goklap, and his associates trapped Ottoman Empire into unwinnable World War I, for the sake of wrong ambitious of Pan-Turanism.

It appears that the Turkish government more worries on the Kurdish issues then the nihilism terrorist states in Iraq/Syria ISIS/ISIL which indiscriminately killing anyone who disagree their brand of Islamism. The catalogs of the plan have still remained ill-defined and sketchy, but reports argue Turkey wants to obligate of a buffer zone several miles into Syria, mainly the Kurdish areas, in addition of backed up by a no fly zone; including disarming the Kurdish fighting forces in Syria, who are daily confronting terroristic state ISIS/ISIL. People contemplating creating a buffer zone inside Syria should think twice, because it will not be a “cake walk”.
