Schiff, Garcetti, Newsom, Zimmer to Participate in March For Justice Armenian Genocide

April 24, 2017 By administrator

(Clockwise from top left) Adam Schiff, Eric Garcetti, Gavin Newsom, and Steve Zimmer are four elected officials that will be participating in March For Justice on April 24, 2017 from Pan Pacific Park and ending at the Turkish Consulate in Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES—The Armenian Genocide Committee announced on Sunday the line-up of elected officials that will be marching with the collective voice of the Armenian community on April 24, 2017. Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, Congressman Adam Schiff, Los Angeles City Mayor Eric Garcetti, and Los Angeles Unified District School Board President Steve Zimmer will join marchers alongside other elected officials and leaders of the Armenian community, and voice their support in calling for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the demand for justice.

March for Justice will take place on Monday, April 24, 12 p.m. from Pan Pacific Park to the Turkish Consulate in Los Angeles.

Lieutenant Governor Newsom, a staunch supporter of the Armenian Cause, has consistently expressed his commitment to the just resolution of the Armenian Genocide. As Mayor of San Francisco, and throughout his tenure as Lieutenant Governor, his advocacy for a fair, just, and comprehensive resolution of the Armenian Genocide has been based off a foundation of truth and justice. He has called on Congress and the President of the United States to properly recognize the Armenian Genocide numerous times.

Congressman Adam Schiff has been a vocal advocate of the Armenian Genocide on Capitol Hill. His work as a veteran legislator who has consistently and unequivocally called on the Republic of Turkey, fellow members of Congress, and members of the federal government to recognize the Armenian Genocide has made him a strong ally of the Armenian community on capitol hill. His unwavering support of the Armenian cause is coupled with legislative efforts on these efforts.

Mayor Eric Garcetti has been a strong and passionate advocate for the Armenian Community of Los Angeles. As the councilmember representing Little Armenia, Garcetti has always been a great friend and a strong supporter on issues of concern to the Armenian-American community. His many accomplishments include consistently calling upon the U.S. Government to recognize the the Armenian Genocide, helping initiate the sister-city partnership between Los Angeles and Yerevan, advocating for city council to add Armenian language to election ballots and materials, and providing funding to support programs and projects of many community based organizations.

Steve Zimmer has spent seventeen years as an educator and counselor to Armenian students,  developing a high level of understanding of the issues and concerns that are important to his Armenian students and their communities. Since taking office, Steve has demonstrated his ability to implement new policies that advance the interests of his Armenian students and to also uncover corrupt charter schools that are funded by taxpayer dollars, such as the Fethullah Gulen associated charter schools.

The Armenian Genocide Committee (AGC) was established to steer and coordinate the multifaceted commemorative activities for the Armenian Genocide and is composed of eighteen (18) Armenian organizations. The Armenian Genocide marks one of the 20th century’s greatest crimes against humanity. In 1915, the Turkish Government began a premeditated and systematic campaign to dispossess the Armenian population from its ancestral homeland and annihilated 1.5 million defenseless men, women, and children in furtherance of its Pan-Turkic plan to ensure Turkey  is exclusively for Turks.  Turkey must finally acknowledge its responsibility for the Genocide and make appropriate moral, financial, and territorial restitution, as mandated by the fundamental norms of international law and civilized society. The March for Justice on April 24, 2017 and affiliated events will call attention to this crime against humanity, provide a concrete list of demands from Turkey, and push for proposed legislation with U.S. law-makers.

Trump Decries ‘Witch Hunt’ In Russian Hacking Furor

January 6, 2017 By administrator

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump: “This is a political witch hunt.”

RFE/RL WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump on January 6 called the furor over alleged Russian hacking a “political witch hunt” and requested a congressional investigation into leaks from a classified intelligence report.

Trump’s media offensive came just hours before he was briefed by U.S. intelligence and law-enforcement officials who accuse Russia of trying to influence the November 8 presidential election by stealing and publishing Democratic party e-mails.

Trump later said he had a “constructive” meeting with Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and FBI Director James Comey, though his statement did not indicate whether he now agrees with the intelligence community that Russia directed the hacking campaign.

Trump’s statement echoed his previous statements that Russia, China, or other actors could have been behind the intrusions, and he asserted that the hacking had “no effect on the outcome of the election.”

In an interview with The New York Times shortly before the briefing, the Republican president-elect repeated his skepticism of Russia’s involvement in the hacking, which is widely seen as having damaged the campaign of his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

Contradicting the assessment of the U.S. intelligence community, Trump has repeatedly said that other states or individuals could have been behind the breaches.

“China, relatively recently, hacked 20 million government names,” Trump was quoted by The New York Times as saying, referring to the theft of millions of federal government personnel files in 2014 and 2015. “How come nobody even talks about that? This is a political witch hunt.”

Trump, who has said he wants to improve ties with Moscow, has also dismissed reports citing unidentified U.S. intelligence officials accusing Russia of trying to help him win the election with the hacking campaign.

The Kremlin has repeatedly denied any involvement in the cyberattacks.

Later on January 6, Trump called for a congressional investigation into an NBC News report featuring details from the classified intelligence report — ordered by President Barack Obama — about the alleged Russian hacking campaign.

The NBC News report on January 5 cited two unnamed intelligence officials reportedly involved in preparing the intelligence assessment, parts of which could be made public as early as January 6.

The intelligence document concludes, among other things, that the hacks were payback for the Obama administration’s questioning of Vladimir Putin’s legitimacy as Russia’s president, NBC News said in its report.

Several media outlets in addition to NBC reported contents of the classified report that had been delivered to Obama earlier on January 5.

There was no immediate response from congressional leaders, Democrat or Republican, to Trump’s call. Many lawmakers in both parties have endorsed the conclusions of intelligence agencies that Russia-government-backed hackers stole e-mails from U.S. political organizations.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters in Washington after Trump’s tweet that he feels “confident” that the White House did not leak details of the report to the media.

In the statement released after the 90-minute meeting at his Manhattan office, Trump said that he was satisfied with the information he had received from the officials on the investigation.

The statement, however, did not specifically address the findings that the Russian government directed the hacks, instead stating only that Russia, China, and others were “consistently trying to break through the cyberinfrastructure” of U.S. government institutions.

Those targets, Trump said in the statement, included the Democratic National Committee, whose internal e-mails were later published by WikiLeaks, embarrassing top party officials. Wikileaks has denied it obtained the files from Russia.

Trump insisted, however, that hackers had “absolutely no effect on the outcome of the election including the fact that there was no tampering whatsoever with voting machines.”

Earlier on January 6, aides to Trump said the president-elect would have an open mind when he is briefed on the matter at his office in Manhattan.

Trump spokesman Sean Spicer told ABC News that the incoming president is “prepared to listen and understand how they got to the conclusions they did” but added that Trump has “a healthy skepticism of everything.”

Kellyanne Conway, who is set to serve as a counselor to Trump when he assumes office on January 20, told CBS television that “we do not want any foreign government to interfere in this country.”

“At the same time, let’s wait until the president-elect receives the briefing of this fresh, new material,” she said.

Trump’s briefing came a day after Clapper told a Senate committee that intelligence agencies were even more “resolute” now about the Russian hacking than in October, when an initial report was released.

“I think there is an important distinction here between healthy skepticism, which policymakers…should always have for intelligence, but I think there’s a difference between skepticism and disparagement,” Clapper said.

‘We are at political war with Turkey’ – Mourad Papazian

July 6, 2016 By administrator

political war 740Both as a presidential candidate and as president François Hollande promised and he has kept his promise, Mourad Papazian, co-president of the Coordination Council of Armenian Organizations of France (CCAF), told Tert.am as he commented on the debates on a draft resolution criminalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide the National Assembly of France held last week.

“We have worked with both specialists of the presidential palace and the Ministries of Justice, and Foreign Affairs, to compile an appropriate text to prevent its reversal by the Constitutional Court. [The earlier measure] was reversed in 2012; more difficulties arose after the Perinçek trial got under way,” he said, adding that both French and Armenian specialists had worked on the text.

Asked whether the Turks in France adhere to denial policies, Mr Papazian replied, “There are attempts, as well as organizations and individuals who work for Turkey. What they say is that no genocide ever happened, describing all that as the Armenian lobby’s impact. So that law is very important for final clarifications. It also aims to enable Turkey to recognize its own history.”

“States such America, Israel and Austria – which do not recognize the Genocide today – behave so only for fear of spoiling diplomatic relations. But that isn’t victory for Turkey. That signals victory through blackmail, but they are never actually a winner,” he added. a

The Armenian community in France has to work hard before September for the draft to be approved by the French Senate as well.

“Turkey will not sit on its hands and has to take measures to prevent the Senate vote. We, on our part, have to continue our work for the draft to pass a vote. That is, we are at political war with Turkey.”

The French government released the text of the draft law criminalizing the denial of genocides and crimes against humanity on June 29. The amendment envisages 1-year imprisonment or a 45,000 euro fine for denying the Armenian Genocide.

System of a Down’s Serj Tankian Perform New Political Song ‘Artsakh’

May 19, 2016 By administrator

Karabakh music

Serj Tankian has recorded “Artsakh,” a song calling for solidarity among Armenians in the disputed region of Azerbaijan.

Passionate acoustic tune calls for solidarity among Armenians in disputed region of Azerbaijan.

System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian was so moved by the resilience of Armenian fighters in Nagorno-Karabakh, a region in the former Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan that neighbors Armenia, during a four-day war in April that he wrote a passionate new political folk song, “Artsakh,” in deference to them. The song voices support for the people of Artsakh – the Armenian name for the region – and protests what Tankian describes as Azeri aggression.

“These people have lived on those lands for thousands of years,” the singer wrote in a statement. “They have struggle but also great beauty written on their foreheads. The whimsical appropriation of land by an empire (Stalin) placed them under Azerbaijan. They have since gained their independence and have lived a prosperous existence for the last 20 or so years. I do not believe in wars and ultimately borders but I deeply believe in self-determination and life without oppression. Therefore it is time for the world to recognize them as the Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).”

Violence broke out in the region on April 2nd, prompting Azerbaijan’s president, Ilham Aliyev, to call for the “immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Armenian troops from our territories,” according to The Washington Post. As the situation worsened, Azerbaijani troops attempted to take control of the region. The paper reported scores of deaths, the worst in the region since 1994. A ceasefire was declared on April 5th. Russian President Vladimir Putin voiced his support of a truce, according to Armenia Now.

“It’s a crazy provocation,” the singer tells Rolling Stone. “It’s a land that these people have lived on from the beginning of time, from time immemorial, with children springing from the rivers and generations coming from their mountains. There is a national liberation struggle embedded within their character, their public mask, if you will. It goes on through trying to create peace. We will ultimately win with culture and all this beautiful stuff.”

Tankian made a video for the song, on which he sings and plays guitar, this past weekend.

“Artsakh” lyrics, translated:

We’ve always lived on these lands,

Reaped and harvested these fields,

Generations sprung from your rivers,

Children born from your mountains,

The public mask of tradition,

The struggle for liberation or death,

The enemy’s gaze at your terrain,

Our smiles at your bosom,

At your bottomless will.

We’re going to sing with our fists

With the tricolor flag of justice,

Humanitarian love of peace

With the holy blessing of a child’s face,

We are going to prevail with culture

We are going to prevail with culture

We are going to prevail by being Armenian.

I was inspired to write a song for #artsakh. @RollingStone is premiering the video by @RandCourtney here – https://t.co/BiR2ycvlyW

Armenia needs strong and mature political forces – Piotr Świtalski

May 11, 2016 By administrator

f573311a19ca79_573311a19cab3.thumbArmenia needs strong and mature political forces now, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Armenia Piotr Antoni Świtalski stated at a debate on European politics and Armenian parties on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the European People’s Party (EPP).

According to him, Armenia has seen a major change, namely, a transition to parliamentary government, with political parties playing a more serious role.

Any forecasts about further developments are difficult to make. Mr Świtalski believes that it could be a factor in the formation of political systems of many countries.

Armenia’s new Constitution opened a new chapter in Armenia’s politics.

The transition to parliamentary government creates serious preconditions for political parties.

Mr Świtalski participated in numerous debates on the government systems in the regional countries. In Georgia, young people were critical of political parties and indignant. Armenia has reached a stage when it needs strong, mature and well-organized political parties. Mr Świtalski’s wish is that Armenia develop effective party-forming models ad offer ample opportunities to citizens. Political parties imply a choice.

Germany: Turkish visa free & Billion euro extortion hit Merkel political earthquake

March 14, 2016 By administrator

DW Press review: ‘Nightmare for the CDU’ in German state elections,

Merkel defeatHere in Germany, reporters called it a “black election Sunday,” with one commentator smelling a “whiff of Weimar” in the AfD’s successes. But what did the international press have to say about Sunday’s state elections?

Spanish daily El Pais described Sunday’s election results as a “political earthquake” in Germany, “which has an influence on numerous parties.” El Pais singled out the Social Democrats, in particular, calling it an “enormous humiliation” for Germany’s second party to slide towards just 10 percent of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt in the east and Baden-Württemberg in the southwest.

Many international outlets focused, however, on the losses incurred by Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats. Le Figaro’s Berlin correspondent Nicolas Barotte described the results as a “nightmare” for the CDU and party leader Merkel. “One sole topic dominated the campaign,” Barotte wrote, “the refugee crisis.” Discussing the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) and its huge hauls in all three states, he concluded: “This populist party’s anti-immigration, anti-establishment campaign worked.”

Similarly, British paper The Times said that Merkel “was given a bloody nose by voters” flocking to the right-wing, euroskeptic AfD “in a backlash against her generous refugee policy during its first test at the ballot box.”

The Daily Mail found yet clearer terms with which to describe the outcome, calling it the electorate’s “crushing verdict on open-door migration.” Political correspondent Jack Doyle wrote that the AfD had “surged in popularity following Mrs Merkel’s decision to roll out the red carpet for more than a million migrants.”

The Guardian’s correspondent, Philip Oltermann, noted that Frauke Petry’s “right-wing upstarts appeared to have benefited from an increased voter turnout across the country,” explaining how the AfD won more support from first-time voters than it did from disillusioned Christian Democrats. In France, Le Monde spotted the same trend, writing that “yesterday’s non-voters have become today’s AfD voters.”

‘Scrambling politics’ in Germany

The Wall Street Journal’s story noted how the AfD’s 24-percent haul in Saxony-Anhalt comfortably exceeded pollsters’ predictions, with Anton Troianovski positing that “the migration crisis is scrambling politics in Europe’s largest economy.”

“The results laid bare the extent to which the migration crisis has polarized German society,” Troianovski wrote. “Left-of-center proponents of a welcoming refugee policy also recorded wins Sunday, even as Ms. Merkel’s conservatives suffered,” pointing to the successes of Winfried Kretschmann, the Greens’ charismatic state premier in Baden-Württemberg, and Social Democrat Malu Dreyer in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Swiss daily Blick told its German-speaking readers that “Germany is torn,” calling the ballots a twin vote of no-confidence – both in terms of refugee policy and grand coalition government more generally. It noted how the historic fear of the CDU and especially its Bavarian CSU sister party had come to pass – that a party had established itself to the right of Germany’s conservatives.

“For the first time, in the shape of the AfD, a party to the right of the Union has won a lasting foothold, and now sits in eight out of 16 state parliaments. In Saxony-Anhalt the party achieved a real first: it claimed more than 20 percent of the vote and became the second largest power,” Blick’s Iris Mayer wrote.

The Neue Zürcher Zeitung similarly saw a “warning shot towards Berlin” and next year’s federal elections in Sunday’s results, calling them a “clear signal of [voter] dissatisfaction.” The paper says the established parties have two political responses open to them: either to recognize “that the majority of the voters for the fast-climbers [the AfD] are not merely a bunch of grubby racists, extremists and simpletons, who are best ignored” or, alternatively, to launch into “an indignant outcry in the media and politics about the threat from the ‘right-wing-populist’ AfD.” The second scenario, Peter Rasonyi writes, seems the most likely reaction, “but it’s not too late to reconsider.”
