Jordan Kutzik,: Why Jews Need To Recognize the Armenian Genocide Once and for All

May 17, 2016 By administrator

Armenian genocide recognitionBy Jordan Kutzik,

Imagine that you’re walking in Manhattan a few days before Holocaust Memorial Day and see five airplanes skywriting in massive letters that the Holocaust was a hoax.

How would you feel?

Imagine that you later find out that a full-page advertisement had run the same day in the Washington Post explaining that although some Jews were killed during World War II, the Holocaust never occurred. Imagine if that advertisement directed readers to a website that explained that these same Jews were responsible for their own deaths.

How would the American Jewish community react?

And imagine that a massive billboard with the same advertisement was erected in Times Square shortly before tens of thousands of Jews were set to gather there to commemorate Kristallnacht.

To whom would you turn? Would you still feel safe living in New York?

For New York’s Armenian community, this is unfortunately not just a hypothetical situation. On April 20, a few days before the 101st anniversary of the beginning of the Armenian Genocide, five airplanes really did skywrite over the Hudson River that the Armenian Genocide is a “Geno-lie.” A full-page advertisement was really run in the Washington Post explaining that although some Armenians were killed during WWI, there was never a genocide against them, and the same advertisement directed readers to a website explaining that the Armenians were responsible for their own deaths. When tens of thousands of Armenian Americans gathered in Times Square to commemorate the 101st anniversary of the April 24, 1915 mass arrest and subsequent execution of 250 Armenian intellectuals, regarded as the first attack of the genocide, attendees really were confronted by a large billboard denying the slaughter.

Despite the attempts of groups trying to pretend otherwise, the historical veracity of the Armenian Genocide is simply not up for debate. Between 1915 and 1923, the Turkish government systematically and purposefully murdered about 1.5 million Armenians in a plethora of horrific ways. As attested to by hundreds of articles in The New York Times alone, the Turkish army raided thousands of villages, immediately slaughtering the young men and forcing the surviving Armenian women, children and elderly onto death marches in the Syrian desert. During these marches Turkish soldiers raped young Armenian women and girls by the thousands and shot random people dead. According to various contemporary diplomatic sources, the massive Euphrates River was left overflowing with tens of thousands of corpses.

In a disturbing foreshadowing of the Jewish Holocaust, thousands of Armenians were squeezed into crowded train cars that led to their deaths. Many of those who reached the Syrian desert, either by train or after having survived death marches, were imprisoned in concentration camps where they quickly died of dehydration. In other places, children were murdered with overdoses of morphine. In a few cases the Turks executed large groups of Armenian children by locking them in schools and releasing a toxic gas.

Contemporary press reports explain in remarkable detail that the massacres were not the actions of random misbehaving soldiers but the result of a clear and intentional plan by the Turkish government. As one article that ran in The New York Times on October 7, 1915 titled “800,000 Armenians Counted Destroyed” explained, Viscount Bryce, a British MP who had previously served as the U.K.’s ambassador to America, testified before Parliament that “The death of these people resulted from the deliberate and premeditated policy of the gang now in possession of the Turkish government. Orders for the massacres came in every case direct from Constantinople.”

The same article reported that nearly the entire Armenian population in large swaths of the Ottoman Empire had already been killed. Other contemporaneous articles precisely described the events as a “policy of extermination against a helpless people” and a “campaign of race extermination.” It is no surprise, therefore, that the Polish-Jewish legal scholar Raphael Lemkin had the Armenian catastrophe in mind, along with the extermination of his own family in the Holocaust, when he coined the term “genocide” in 1943.

The Armenian-American community strongly protested against the campaign by Fact Check Armenia to deny the historical veracity of the murders of their families. Unfortunately, the American Jewish community barely responded to it. One reason why is that today’s Turkish government completely denies that the founders of its country committed a crime against humanity. Because Turkey plays a key role in Middle Eastern politics, many politicians and organizations, including American Jewish ones, are afraid to offend it.

President Barack Obama is a good example. Despite the fact that 44 American states recognize the Armenian Genocide, the federal government carefully avoids using the G-word out of fear that Turkey may punish the U.S. by ceasing to cooperate with the U.S. military.

In 2007, when the U.S. Congress failed to pass a bill recognizing the Armenian Genocide, then-senator Obama criticized his colleagues for voting against the proposal. In January 2008, Obama strongly criticized the State Department’s decision to relieve American Ambassador to Armenia John Marshall Evans of his duties, allegedly for his having described Turkey’s actions during World War I as genocide. Obama promised at that time that if he were elected president he would always openly state that the Turkish government had committed genocide against its Armenian citizens. Despite his promises, however, President Obama has fastidiously avoided using the G-word in official statements.

Similarly, Abe Foxman, the former national director of the Anti-Defamation League, unleashed a firestorm of controversy in 2007 when he urged Congress not to recognize the Armenian Genocide. Andrew Tarsy, the director of the ADL’s New England branch, was fired after he told Foxman over the phone that he felt that the organization’s position was “morally indefensible.” (He was rehired shortly thereafter. ) The ADL then released a cowardly press release explaining that the events in Turkey during WWI were “tantamount to genocide” but that the Congressional effort to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide was a “counterproductive diversion” that would potentially endanger Turkish Jewry and Israel’s relationship to Turkey.

Seven years later, Foxman and the ADL formally recognized the Armenian Genocide. Around the same time, the American Jewish Committee also changed its position. They, together with a half dozen prominent Jewish organizations — including the Union for Reform Judaism, the Zionist Organization of America and most recently, in 2015, the Jewish Council for Public Affairs — now recognize Turkey’s persecution of the Armenians as genocide. And just last week, the ADL’s current national director and CEO Jonathan Greenblatt released a statement unequivocally recognizing the WWI events as genocide and saying that the ADL will support American recognition of the genocide. This is far from sufficient, however; the vast majority of American Jewish organizations still do not have a firm policy on the issue.

The latest brazen attempts to deny history make vividly clear why the Jewish community must take a united stand in recognizing the Armenian Genocide and encouraging the American and Israeli governments to do so. We Jews, more than perhaps any other people in the world, know what it means to suffer genocide and what it feels like when people have the gall to deny that it ever occurred. Besides the fact that it is our moral imperative to do so, there is also a lot we can learn from the Armenians if we express our solidarity with them and work together to fight the denial of their genocide. Since they are a people that experienced genocide a generation before the Jews, we can learn a great deal from them about how to properly remember and commemorate such a tragedy when there are hardly any remaining survivors. It would also, of course, be of great use to have another closely allied people in the fight against Holocaust denial.

Most important, however, is the fact that remaining silent when governments deny the veracity of a genocide encourages others who would seek to commit similar atrocities. As a sign in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum notes, Adolf Hitler incited his generals just before the Nazi invasion of Poland by asking, “Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?”

This piece was published in the Yiddish Forward on May 8, 2016 . It has been translated into English by the author.

Armenia needs strong and mature political forces – Piotr Świtalski

May 11, 2016 By administrator

f573311a19ca79_573311a19cab3.thumbArmenia needs strong and mature political forces now, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Armenia Piotr Antoni Świtalski stated at a debate on European politics and Armenian parties on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the European People’s Party (EPP).

According to him, Armenia has seen a major change, namely, a transition to parliamentary government, with political parties playing a more serious role.

Any forecasts about further developments are difficult to make. Mr Świtalski believes that it could be a factor in the formation of political systems of many countries.

Armenia’s new Constitution opened a new chapter in Armenia’s politics.

The transition to parliamentary government creates serious preconditions for political parties.

Mr Świtalski participated in numerous debates on the government systems in the regional countries. In Georgia, young people were critical of political parties and indignant. Armenia has reached a stage when it needs strong, mature and well-organized political parties. Mr Świtalski’s wish is that Armenia develop effective party-forming models ad offer ample opportunities to citizens. Political parties imply a choice.

Iraq Army Will Liberate Mosul From Daesh Without any ‘Help’ From Turkey

December 27, 2015 By administrator

1032359360Iraq would not allow any state to send troops to liberate Mosul from the Daesh militants, according to spokesman of Iraq’s joint military alignment Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul.

DUBAI (Sputnik) — Baghdad does not need the support of Turkish troops in the liberation of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, captured by the Islamic State (ISIL, or Daesh in Arabic) militant group, spokesman of Iraq’s joint military alignment Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasul said Sunday.

On December 4, Turkey deployed about 150 troops and 25 tanks to northern Iraq reportedly to help national forces to reclaim Mosul, which was captured by Daesh in June 2014.

“The government has announced that it does not want participation of any troops, except the Iraqi ones, in the liberation of Mosul. Participation of the Turkish or any other troops is not the issue, especially taking into consideration the multitude of the Iraqi troops, including the military, tribes and popular militia,” Rasul told Al-Hayat newspaper.

He added that Iraq would not allow any other state to send troops to liberate Mosul.

Earlier in December, Baghdad demanded to withdraw Turkish troops from its territory, while Ankara justified the deployment with the necessity to provide security to Turkish soldiers deployed earlier to train local militias, fighting IS jihadists.

Daesh terrorist organization is prohibited in many countries, including Russia.

UN: 1/4 of Iraqi population to need aid by year-end

September 26, 2015 By administrator

49565313-d3a7-4537-a70d-13b98c24489dThe United Nations (UN) says a quarter of Iraq’s population is expected to be in need of humanitarian aid by the end of the year, as the country is threatened by worsening conditions fueled by the terrorist activities of Daesh.

The UN Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq, Dominique Bartsch, said on Friday that the current situation is threatening some 10 million Iraqis, forcing many to leave the country.

Bartsch said the humanitarian situation in Iraq was “worsening dramatically,” after Daesh militants started taking over territory in the country last year.

According to the UN official, the most basic humanitarian aid has been reduced as a result of a lack of funding.

“Many people have reached the end on the line. They no longer have the possibility to support themselves. Many will say that the only future is outside of Iraq,” Bartsch added.

The UN official also voiced concern for some one million Kurdish Iraqis currently displaced inside the country, who are also in serious need of assistance.

He added that “a combination of minimum humanitarian assistance, but also more sustained support…, for example education and rebuilding livelihoods” was required in order to prevent more Iraqis from fleeing their country.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) recently announced that it had opened two new camps for internally displaced Iraqis in the capital, Baghdad, aimed at providing shelter for some the 3,500 Iraqis who have been forced to flee violence in Anbar Province.

This comes as Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said Baghdad needed more logistical aid instead of foreign soldiers in its fight against Daesh militants.

Since the terrorists started operating in Iraq in June 2014, they have been committing vicious crimes against all ethnic and religious communities in the country, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians and others.

Iraqi army soldiers and volunteer fighters have launched joint operations aimed at regaining areas under Daesh control.

ASSYRIAN PEOPLE OF CONSCIENCE IN IRAQ CALL FOR HELP,

ASSYRIAN PEOPLE OF CONSCIENCE IN IRAQ CALL FOR HELP,

Iraqi-AssyrianIRAK’TA SÜRYANİ HALKINA YARDIM ETMEK İÇİN VİCDAN ÇAĞRISIDIR       See English Version at the End

1915’in yüzüncü yılına yaklaştığımız şu günlerde Devlet resmi olarak yüzleşinceye Kadar, bizler hayatın her alanında soykırım yaşayan halkların acılarına ortak olmamız gerekir.

SYRIAN PEOPLE OF CONSCIENCE IN IRAQ CALL FOR HELP is

2014 is a people abandoned to their fate by Isidor slaughtered in June Syrians.

This spell Iraq / Mosul and Nineveh in the ISID (ISIS = DAIS) by force from their homes, torn from the earth to the exiled Syrian Duhok- Erbil- Ankawa is a call of conscience to help people.

Isidor we all know that the first massacre last June 9, 2014 to began with the Syrian people … so much carnage that ancient peoples lived, since it. Armenians, Shiites, Networks, Ezidis, Turkmen, Alevis, Kurds …

These days, Musul- Ninova- Erbil in Syriac, was Eziu in Sengal, Kobani’yi in Kurdish, Alevi Karatepe is time to be.

Way people lived in each non-Sunni Arabs suffering its share of the massacre. Until after the massacre Sengal in Eziu eyes from Europe, until the translated region. Kobani’yi 37 days is also Kurds who want to experience the same pain Isidor terrorist organization, this time badly bumped. With women, men, the elderly, wife, children with hearing resisting Kurdish and honorable friends. And the Kurds in the Kurdish woman writes a date in person now.

Can not be a summer date, no state and no people do not bury it in the army is always painful.

Situation is like this, the first massacre of Assyrians living and lives can be saved only if the carnage in Europe, Syria, Jordan, Armenia, Turkey, and they found partially secure Iraq / Erbil -Duhok- Ankawa They’re located. Erbil since June, and the whole Church in Ankawa, park and garden area was lucky that people can shelter locations. Still struggling to survive in tents on the streets of thousands of Syriac at this time when the winter season, in resisting the loot absence of mud and rain. Trying to survive with the help of various Syriac humanitarian organizations from Europe of this land can not be happy you even get rid of that most ancient peoples of the massacre. Winter is when playing with all the atrocities door Zemheri month, when it comes on top of an epidemic !. Food, health care, clothing, blankets, shelter, medicine and women’s and infants’ needs, etc. pads are struggling on with life like for many purposes.

I do not race pain. In particular, we are living in pain because pain savagery of the hearing since June. A more other people are starting to embrace the wounds of a suffering people. One-half of the Kurdish people Kobani’de our hearts, Karakale while resisting with the Turkmen Alevis, the other half of Nineveh in Mosul and get the people who immigrated Duhok- Erbil- Ankawa Syriac. I ointments and suffering as we are human beings each of us. Here Sengal to, Kobani’yi to, Karatepe, Suruç what I want to remind you that if you need help Duhok- Erbil and Ankawa to the same materials and humanitarian need …

How odd! In 1915 in the same Armenian genocide as genocide of the Assyrian people living (Seyfo) even learn new new world. So perhaps the German Dr. A book about the genocide of the Assyrian genocide Gabriele Yonan (FORGOTTEN HOLOUST) gave the name. Forgotten Syrians that the grandson of a holocaust, what is it that you are in this day in all the pain experienced while living within the struggle in Iraq? Again forgotten …

In 1915, between 500-750 thousand Assyrians were massacred. Mardin is a portion of the remaining principal residence (Turabdin) to and leaving the past 1500 years in Iraq upuzak emigrated to distant lands. They went, we were missing. We are experiencing a lack of lack …

Fate / grief, perhaps in many pre-drawn these people were murdered by the so-called always friendly neighborly peoples had 2,500 years. What a country like Ezidis of the Assyrians, what an army. Kopana be newly armed with an army of resistance does not know these people. PYD leader Salih Muslim Kurds appropriate media file located on a promise (the Kurds will no longer be one of the military) joins the end I would like to expand this further, genocide living and oppressed people was it’s time to build their own army. To fight against relentless foes.

Kobani’de honorable resistance of the Kurdish people in Syria and Iraq has led to people living in all ethno-religious genocide. Now trying to create his own army in Iraq ADH (Assyrian Democratic Movement) 1000 armed guerrillas, 3000 with volunteer soldiers. Yet do not have enough weapons that the army is trying to structure on the one hand for self defense force. Some Syrian NGOs, Isidor (DAIS) vs. Assyrian / Syriac-Aramaic Keldani- Solidarity on behalf of the association, the value that they are in solidarity with the Kurdish people within to combat common.

Autonomy as long as the Syrian people will not get involved in the Middle East, and lived in every country one day to the next date. They lived all their embedding into rebellion because The suffering in their homeland for thousands of years. The first people who believe that Jesus, as opposed to manslaughter in the Bible’s teachings output and so they always had died ….

As we approach the centenary in 1915 as the official State yüzleşince up to these days, we are suffering, we need to be partners in all spheres of life of people living genocide. 1915 is unfinished for Christians everywhere and radical Islam in the country swayed by this Kilcar. Genocide continues … make them water, to extend our friendly hand, is a posture of both human and conscientious. Departures is coming again, in fact we all know will come. Silently they went, they also quietly cons …

They have quite street in Mesopotamia, streets, houses would always stop to flower. We were going to collect the flowers from their sad faces of the Mesopotamia. World of Aden would be the garden. Our Sol y would be better with them. We went away … Post them here. The birthplace of four major religions and spreads so perhaps this land was cursed since Cain and Abel. Who knows? .is Side of the earth strange people in this cursed land, he always says his brother were slaughtered.

These days, if not stop this painful and still blood in the elderly geography, Is outbound ah, what else do we start the day with a wound every day. This ring together we shall pay our debt of gratitude point. Not leave the Syrian people alone with their grief. I inquire of our conscience. Once you get to the Syrian people cry.

Isidor (ISIS) escape the terror of these people, especially the Syrian people will now come to life again with your scrupulous hand. Massacre of other peoples living / belief of screaming from strangulation, the Syrian people will be drugs to these people in difficult situations will make a tiny contribution to. In this regard, Asuri- Arami- Chaldean / Syriac associations, federations, churches, monasteries, Suryoyo Sell, Assyria-TV, through the help of Ishtar TV can extend the hand very well. You can send to help our Syriac churches and monasteries and civil society organizations in Turkey.

” Somewhere war barons richer, if people are starving,

We eat, we drink, get forbidden.

When people like sheep in a place boğazlanıp cut,
