‘2,300 Humvees in Mosul alone’: Iraq reveals number of US arms falling into ISIS hands

June 1, 2015 By administrator

Iraq has admitted that ISIS jihadists captured huge caches of US-made weapons, including thousands of Humvees seized from Iraqi forces retreating from Mosul last year. The spoils of war have since then been used by ISIS to gain ground in Iraq and Syria.

“In the collapse of Mosul, we lost a lot of weapons,” Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said in an interview with Iraqiya state TV. “We lost 2,300 Humvees in Mosul alone.” Report RT

Just this month the Pentagon estimated that at least half a dozen tanks were abandoned when Baghdad forces lost Ramadi, in addition to artillery pieces, and some 100 Humvees.

Meanwhile the US approved new arms deliveries to the Iraqis last December to replenish the stock ransacked by IS. One contract allows the sale of 175 heavy M1A1 Abarams worth $12.4 billion, while another approves the delivery of 1,000 Humvees, equipped with M2.50 caliber machine guns and MK-19 40mm grenade launchers.

They are exactly the types of weapons IS used to gain vast amount of territory both in Iraq and northern Syria. In fact, the first use of US-Humvees on Syrian territory was reported last year shortly after Mosul has fallen to jihadists.

In mid-May IS gained control of the capital of Anbar province where Iraqi forces had held out against militants for more than a year. They also secured control of Palmyra in Syria, carrying out many executions.

US intelligence points to growing IS strength

Meanwhile on Sunday CIA Director John Brennan acknowledged that IS gains in both Iraq and Syria did not really come as a surprise to the intelligence community.

Mosul New ISIL video shows militants smashing ancient Iraq artifacts

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) released a video on Thursday showing militants using sledgehammers to smash ancient artifacts in Iraq’s northern city of Mosul, describing them as idols that must be removed.

The destructions are part of a campaign by the ISIL extremists, who have destroyed a number of shrines – including Muslim holy sites – in order to eliminate what they view as heresy. They are also believed to have sold ancient artifacts on the black market in order to finance their bloody campaign across the region.

The five-minute video shows a group of bearded men inside the Mosul Museum using hammers and drills to destroy several large statues, which are then shown chipped and in pieces. The video then shows a black-clad man at a nearby archaeological site inside Mosul, drilling through and destroying a winged-bull Assyrian protective deity that dates back to the 7th century B.C.

The video was posted on social media accounts affiliated with the ISIL and though it could not be independently verified it appeared authentic, based on AP’s knowledge of the Mosul Museum.

Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city and the surrounding Nineveh province fell to the militants during their blitz last June after Iraqi security forces melted away.

In their push, the extremists captured large swaths of land in both Iraq and neighboring Syria, declared a self-styled caliphate on territories that are under their control, killing members of religious minorities, driving others from their homes, enslaving women and destroying houses of worship.

The region under ISIL control in Iraq has nearly 1,800 of Iraq’s 12,000 registered archaeological sites and the militants appear to be out to cleanse it of any non-Islamic ideas, including library books, archaeological relics, and even Islamic sites considered idolatrous.

“Oh Muslims, these artifacts that are behind me were idols and gods worshipped by people who lived centuries ago instead of Allah,” a bearded man tells the camera as he stands in front of the partially demolished winged-bull.

“The so-called Assyrians and Akkadians and others looked to gods for war, agriculture and rain to whom they offered sacrifices,” he added, referring to groups that that left their mark on Mesopotamia for more than 5,000 years in what is now Iraq, eastern Syria and southern Turkey.

“Our prophet ordered us to remove all these statues as his followers did when they conquered nations,” the man in the video adds. The video bore the logo of the ISIL’s media arm and was posted on a Twitter account used by the group.

A professor at the Archaeology College in Mosul confirmed to the Associated Press that the two sites depicted in the video are the city museum and a site known as Nirgal Gate, one of several gates to the capital of the Assyrian Empire, Ninevah.

“I’m totally shocked,” Amir al-Jumaili told the AP over the phone from outside of Mosul. “It’s a catastrophe. With the destruction of these artifacts, we can no longer be proud of Mosul’s civilization.”

ISIS burning books at Iraq libraries and loading artifacts onto refrigerated trucks at night, residents say

January 31, 2015 By administrator

Mideast Iraq Libraries In DangerSinan Salaheddin And Sameer N. Yacoub, Associated Press

BAGHDAD — When Islamic State group militants invaded the Central Library of Mosul earlier this month, they were on a mission to destroy a familiar enemy: other people’s ideas.

Residents say the extremists smashed the locks that had protected the biggest repository of learning in the northern Iraq town, and loaded around 2,000 books — including children’s stories, poetry, philosophy and tomes on sports, health, culture and science — into six pickup trucks. They left only Islamic texts.

The rest?

“These books promote infidelity and call for disobeying Allah. So they will be burned,” a bearded militant in traditional Afghani two-piece clothing told residents, according to one man living nearby who spoke to The Associated Press. The man, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he feared retaliation, said the Islamic State group official made his impromptu address as others stuffed books into empty flour bags.

Since the Islamic State group seized a third of Iraq and neighbouring Syria, they have sought to purge society of everything that doesn’t conform to their violent interpretation of Islam. They already have destroyed many archaeological relics, deeming them pagan, and even Islamic sites considered idolatrous. Increasingly books are in the firing line.

Mosul, the biggest city in the Islamic State group’s self-declared caliphate, boasts a relatively educated, diverse population that seeks to preserve its heritage sites and libraries. In the chaos that followed the U.S.-led invasion of 2003 that toppled Saddam Hussein, residents near the Central Library hid some of its centuries-old manuscripts in their own homes to prevent their theft or destruction by looters.

But this time, the Islamic State group has made the penalty for such actions death. Presumed destroyed are the Central Library’s collection of Iraqi newspapers dating to the early 20th century, maps and books from the Ottoman Empire and book collections contributed by around 100 of Mosul’s establishment families.

Days after the Central Library’s ransacking, militants broke into University of Mosul’s library. They made a bonfire out of hundreds of books on science and culture, destroying them in front of students.

A University of Mosul history professor, who spoke on condition he not be named because of his fear of the Islamic State group, said the extremists started wrecking the collections of other public libraries last month. He reported particularly heavy damage to the archives of a Sunni Muslim library, the library of the 265-year-old Latin Church and Monastery of the Dominican Fathers and the Mosul Museum Library with works dating back to 5000 BC.

Citing reports by the locals who live near these libraries, the professor added that the militants used to come during the night and carry the materials in refrigerated trucks with Syria-registered license plates. The fate of these old materials is still unknown, though the professor suggested some could be sold on the black market. In September, Iraqi and Syrian officials told the AP that the militants profited from the sale of ancient artifacts.

The professor said Islamic State group militants appeared determined to “change the face of this city … by erasing its iconic buildings and history.”

Since routing government forces and seizing Mosul last summer, the Islamic State group has destroyed dozens of historic sites, including the centuries-old Islamic mosque shrines of the prophets Seth, Jirjis and Jonah.

An Iraqi lawmaker, Hakim al-Zamili, said the Islamic State group “considers culture, civilization and science as their fierce enemies.”

Al-Zamili, who leads the parliament’s Security and Defence Committee, compared the Islamic State group to raiding medieval Mongols, who in 1258 ransacked Baghdad. Libraries’ ancient collections of works on history, medicine and astronomy were dumped into the Tigris River, purportedly turning the waters black from running ink.

“The only difference is that the Mongols threw the books in the Tigris River, while now Daesh is burning them,” he said, using an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group. “Different method, but same mentality.”

The ABNA said they had obtained the names of 12 Turkish operatives killed at various times in Kobanê and Mosul, adding: “In an attack during the time of the kidnapping incident in Mosul, an artillery unit of the Iraqi army targeted a MIT ‘safe house’. It was targeted ‘by mistake’ on account of the Turkish operatives being dressed like ISIS militants. They had satellite navigation devices and contact information of certain persons working for the MIT in Kobanê. It was understood that these persons were special forces personnel, not ISIS militants, although they were also carrying ID cards given by ISIS to their own fighters.

The names of 4 of the 5 who died are as follows:

ASSYRIAN PEOPLE OF CONSCIENCE IN IRAQ CALL FOR HELP,

ASSYRIAN PEOPLE OF CONSCIENCE IN IRAQ CALL FOR HELP,

Iraqi-AssyrianIRAK’TA SÜRYANİ HALKINA YARDIM ETMEK İÇİN VİCDAN ÇAĞRISIDIR       See English Version at the End

1915’in yüzüncü yılına yaklaştığımız şu günlerde Devlet resmi olarak yüzleşinceye Kadar, bizler hayatın her alanında soykırım yaşayan halkların acılarına ortak olmamız gerekir.

SYRIAN PEOPLE OF CONSCIENCE IN IRAQ CALL FOR HELP is

2014 is a people abandoned to their fate by Isidor slaughtered in June Syrians.

This spell Iraq / Mosul and Nineveh in the ISID (ISIS = DAIS) by force from their homes, torn from the earth to the exiled Syrian Duhok- Erbil- Ankawa is a call of conscience to help people.

Isidor we all know that the first massacre last June 9, 2014 to began with the Syrian people … so much carnage that ancient peoples lived, since it. Armenians, Shiites, Networks, Ezidis, Turkmen, Alevis, Kurds …

These days, Musul- Ninova- Erbil in Syriac, was Eziu in Sengal, Kobani’yi in Kurdish, Alevi Karatepe is time to be.

Way people lived in each non-Sunni Arabs suffering its share of the massacre. Until after the massacre Sengal in Eziu eyes from Europe, until the translated region. Kobani’yi 37 days is also Kurds who want to experience the same pain Isidor terrorist organization, this time badly bumped. With women, men, the elderly, wife, children with hearing resisting Kurdish and honorable friends. And the Kurds in the Kurdish woman writes a date in person now.

Can not be a summer date, no state and no people do not bury it in the army is always painful.

Situation is like this, the first massacre of Assyrians living and lives can be saved only if the carnage in Europe, Syria, Jordan, Armenia, Turkey, and they found partially secure Iraq / Erbil -Duhok- Ankawa They’re located. Erbil since June, and the whole Church in Ankawa, park and garden area was lucky that people can shelter locations. Still struggling to survive in tents on the streets of thousands of Syriac at this time when the winter season, in resisting the loot absence of mud and rain. Trying to survive with the help of various Syriac humanitarian organizations from Europe of this land can not be happy you even get rid of that most ancient peoples of the massacre. Winter is when playing with all the atrocities door Zemheri month, when it comes on top of an epidemic !. Food, health care, clothing, blankets, shelter, medicine and women’s and infants’ needs, etc. pads are struggling on with life like for many purposes.

I do not race pain. In particular, we are living in pain because pain savagery of the hearing since June. A more other people are starting to embrace the wounds of a suffering people. One-half of the Kurdish people Kobani’de our hearts, Karakale while resisting with the Turkmen Alevis, the other half of Nineveh in Mosul and get the people who immigrated Duhok- Erbil- Ankawa Syriac. I ointments and suffering as we are human beings each of us. Here Sengal to, Kobani’yi to, Karatepe, Suruç what I want to remind you that if you need help Duhok- Erbil and Ankawa to the same materials and humanitarian need …

How odd! In 1915 in the same Armenian genocide as genocide of the Assyrian people living (Seyfo) even learn new new world. So perhaps the German Dr. A book about the genocide of the Assyrian genocide Gabriele Yonan (FORGOTTEN HOLOUST) gave the name. Forgotten Syrians that the grandson of a holocaust, what is it that you are in this day in all the pain experienced while living within the struggle in Iraq? Again forgotten …

In 1915, between 500-750 thousand Assyrians were massacred. Mardin is a portion of the remaining principal residence (Turabdin) to and leaving the past 1500 years in Iraq upuzak emigrated to distant lands. They went, we were missing. We are experiencing a lack of lack …

Fate / grief, perhaps in many pre-drawn these people were murdered by the so-called always friendly neighborly peoples had 2,500 years. What a country like Ezidis of the Assyrians, what an army. Kopana be newly armed with an army of resistance does not know these people. PYD leader Salih Muslim Kurds appropriate media file located on a promise (the Kurds will no longer be one of the military) joins the end I would like to expand this further, genocide living and oppressed people was it’s time to build their own army. To fight against relentless foes.

Kobani’de honorable resistance of the Kurdish people in Syria and Iraq has led to people living in all ethno-religious genocide. Now trying to create his own army in Iraq ADH (Assyrian Democratic Movement) 1000 armed guerrillas, 3000 with volunteer soldiers. Yet do not have enough weapons that the army is trying to structure on the one hand for self defense force. Some Syrian NGOs, Isidor (DAIS) vs. Assyrian / Syriac-Aramaic Keldani- Solidarity on behalf of the association, the value that they are in solidarity with the Kurdish people within to combat common.

Autonomy as long as the Syrian people will not get involved in the Middle East, and lived in every country one day to the next date. ISIS targets Mosul goldsmiths to fill its coffers

74099Image1MOSUL, Iraq – Islamic State is putting the squeeze on gold merchants in Iraq’s second city, demanding extortionate “taxes” to help fund its four-month-old occupation.

ISIS has already opened two centres for tax collection on the eastern and western sides of the city. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, self-styled caliph of the Islamic State now appears to be eyeing the wealth of the souq.

“We have to pay one third of what we have in money and gold in our shops,” said Haitham [not his real name], a goldsmith in Mosul, barely hiding his anger. “ISIS informed us to visit the tax center, which is based in the building that used to be the Iraq Museum, to declare the value and pay one third as alms.”

His son calmed him as his voice rose; ISIS militants might be within earshot.

“The religion of Islam says that the tax on gold is 2.5 percent, so where did they get this ruling from?” asked the goldsmith. “But I will give them one third of my gold and money to avoid their Sharia Courts, which usually ends in either a whipping or death. I will sell my shop after this, before I lose everything I have,” he lamented.

ISIS does not only target gold shops. Simple street vendors and gas stations have also been ordered to pay “alms”.

Yousef, a street vendor in his twenties, was arranging his goods and getting back to work after he paid what he was told he owed to ISIS. “The street vendors have to pay no less than $2,000 in rent, which all goes to the finance ministry of the Islamic Caliphate,” he said.

“I paid $2100 and got a receipt that just has the stamp of ISIS on it. The receipt does not mention the amount I paid or even carry a signature,” he says “I had to pay it, otherwise I would become unemployed like so many others who are left in Mosul without a job.”

ISIS recently announced gas stations in Mosul must renew their contracts according to new rules, which are aimed at increasing the income into the militants’ coffers.

The new rules tap private money as well as that held in government banks. Saba, a resident of Mosul, said that she had to wait for three months for the banks to reopen. “It was not easy to withdraw all my money from the bank as there are certain rules that ISIS has imposed. A person cannot withdraw an amount exceeding 20 million Iraqi Dinars [$17,200],” said Saba.

Saba showed a paper with the ISIS seal on it, “Before going to the bank, you have to first go to the ISIS court and request to withdraw money from the bank and state the reason why,” she said. “Those who have put their money in the bank to earn interest via saving accounts will lose all their right to claim their money back, because they consider savings accounts as usury,” said Saba.

“The whole process of money withdrawal will take more than one week, and after standing in lines at ISIS courts and banks for days, they will deduct 10 percent from the amount you withdrew as a tax for ISIS,” she said.

To avoid becoming a victim of ISIS by losing your capital in order to finance wars in Iraq and Syria, the merchants are now avoiding banks.

Finances from Mosul have been flowing to ISIS for several years. According to a senior officer in the Iraqi Ministry of Defense, ISIS records show it raised $5 million a month in recent years.

“ISIS collected money from street vendors, merchants, pharmacies, clinics, and employees in recent years. The Iraqi state could not prevent ISIS extortion from the people of Mosul because they were not cooperating with us due to the threats and terror they were exposed to,” said the senior officer.

“Without that large amount of finances, ISIS could not have occupied Mosul, Salahaddin, Anbar or opened another big front in Syria.”

(Reuters) – Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Saturday 49 Turkish hostages seized by Islamic State militants in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul in June have been brought safely back to Turkey by the country’s intelligence agency.
