Pope urges Catholic parishes to take in refugees

Pope Francis is asking faithful throughout Europe to shelter refugees fleeing “death from war and hunger.”

Francis said that the Vatican’s two parishes are taking in two families of refugees. He gave no details as he addressed tens of thousands of people in St Peter’s Square.

He said it’s not enough to say “have courage, hang in there” to the hundreds of thousands of refugees who are on the march toward what he called “life’s hope.”

He called on every Catholic parish, convent, monastery and sanctuary in Europe to shelter a family, and asked bishops throughout Europe to urge their dioceses to do the same.

Gulbenkian Grant Helps Update “Armenian Jerusalem” Project

The Gulbenkian Foundation, one of the world’s leading philanthropic organizations, has provided the “Armenian Jerusalem” heritage preservation website project with a new grant, enabling organizers to carry out necessary hardware upgrades and software updates.

The grant reaffirms the Foundation’s keen interest in the project and cements its support for what is hoped will help preserve the history, culture and traditions of the Armenians of Jerusalem, rescuing their saga from oblivion. report hetq.am

The project, launched in 2007, is the brainchild of Arthur Hagopian, former Press Officer of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, and involves the creation of a website that will host a compendium of archival material chronicling the story of a community that has its roots in the city even before the advent of the Christian era.

The website was originally located at http://www.kaghakatzi.org, but has now moved to a permanent address at http://armenian-jerusalem.org. One of its primary objectives was the creation of an all-in-one family tree that highlights the inter-relationship and inter-connectivity of the “kaghakatsi” residents of the Armenian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem.

The “kaghakatsi” are a unique genealogical entity: every member of the sprawling clan is related either closely or distantly, to another. As distinguished from the “vanketsi” survivors of the Armenian genocide who found refuge in the Patriarchate’s convent of St James, the “kaghakatsi” are natives who first settled in Jerusalem about 2,000 years ago, their ancestors arriving in the region in the wake of the conquering armies of emperor Tigranes II, “arkayitz arka,” (king of kings).

The Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem has given its blessing to the project, granting it access to genealogical archives dating back over a century and a half. And in their turn, expatriate “kaghakatsi” have been providing the project with detailed genealogical information helping it create and populate the all-in-one family tree.

This is the second time the august Gulbenkian Foundation has bankrolled the project. Eight years ago, the Foundation, which is based in Lisbon, pitched in with funds to purchase a desktop PC package and various web design and graphics software packages, but with the exponential leap in IT, upgrades and updates have become mandatory. Necessarily, the staple workhorse, FrontPage has had to bow out making way for Expression Web and Dreamweaver, and Windows XP has graduated into Windows 8.1 (and, within days, Windows 10).

The Foundation, a legacy of philanthropist Calouste Gulbenkian (Mr. Five Percent), was established in 1956 entrusted with a mandate for “the whole of humanity”, its “original purpose focused on fostering knowledge and raising the quality of life of persons throughout the fields of the arts, charity, science and education.”

Jerusalem occupies a perpetually beloved niche in the core of the Foundation, the factor behind its interest in the “Armenian Jerusalem” heritage preservation website project. The Foundation is a principal donor of the Armenian Patriarchate whose St James convent houses two edifices whose construction it funded some 90 years ago: the Gulbenkian library and the Holy Translators’ (Tarkmanchatz) high school.

In announcing the new grant, Razmik Panossian, director of the Foundation’s Armenian Communities Department, noted it “supports projects that can have a positive impact on Armenian communities around the world, taking into consideration current realities and needs.”

The Department works to create a viable future for the Armenian people in which its culture and language are preserved and valued, and “we hope that by supporting initiatives like the ‘Armenian Jerusalem’ website project we can contribute to the preservation of the rich Armenian cultural and historical heritage in the Holy City,” he stated

Organizing the website has entailed a diverse range of research efforts, some resulting in unknown and intriguing tidbits about one of the world’s most vibrant communities, whose creativity and enterprising spirit has helped place the city firmly in the centre of the world map.

It was the Armenians who gave Jerusalem its first printing press and its first photographic studio – among other firsts. Their mellifluously decorated ceramic tiles adorn the walls of some of the world’s most magnificent edifices, among them, the Dome of the Rock.

And it is the Armenians who continue to give Jerusalem its hue and sheen of gold.

Yerevan offers its help to Tbilisi in flood relief efforts

YEREVAN, June 15. /ARKA/. Armenia’s premier Hovik Abrahamyan told his Georgian counterpart Irakly Garibashvili on the phone on Sunday that Armenia could provide assistance in the flood relief efforts.

Abrahamyan instructed the minister of territorial administration and emergencies Armen Yeritsyan to continue cooperation with his Georgian colleague to provide help if required, the government press office reported.

Garibashvili thanked Armenia’s premier for the condolences and the readiness to help, according to the report.

A huge flood in the Georgian capital devastated the city on Saturday night leading to some 12 casualties. The floods also hit the city’s zoo and left beasts roaming the streets.

How a couple of glasses of red wine could help you live longer

Red wine could help us live longer, scientists have claimed – reviving a furious debate over an ingredient once dubbed the ‘elixir of youth,’ the Daily Mail reports.

Resveratrol, which protects red grapes, cacao beans and Japanese knotweed against infections and drought, has divided experts for a decade over reports it could make humans live longer.

Now a study claims it could prolong our lives after all, because it imitates another protective enzyme – and just a ‘couple of glasses’ of red wine may be enough to benefit.

The study, published in the journal Nature, claimed it was time to finally ‘dispel much of the mystery and controversy about how resveratrol really works.’

Tests on mice previously showed resveratrol increased their lifespan and stamina and prevented diabetes, but critics complained it was being used in ‘unrealistically high doses.’

So the new study’s authors used a much weaker dose, up to 1,000 times smaller than before.

Their breakthrough then came when they combined resveratrol with an enzyme called TyrRS, which binds to the nucleus of a cell when it is under stress.

They found that when resveratrol and TyrRS were combined – as can happen naturally in the body – the pair imitating a cell-healing amino acid called tyrosine.

That process in turn activated a protein called PARP-1 which has a ‘DNA-repair factor thought to have a significance influence on lifespan’, the researchers said.

Kurds help ISIS with terrain, language in battle for Kobani

BEIRUT – Ethnic Kurds are helping members of the Islamic State group in the battle for the key Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani, sharing their knowledge of the local terrain and language with the extremists, according to Iraqi and Kurdish officials.

It is not clear how many Kurds are aiding the estimated 3,000 Islamic State militants in the Kobani area — and fighting against their own Kurdish brethren — but activists say they are playing a major role in the 7-week-old conflict near the Turkish border.

A top military commander for the extremists in the town is an Iraqi Kurd, known by the nom de guerre of Abu Khattab al-Kurdi, helping them in the battle against fellow Kurds.

Officials with the main Syrian Kurdish force known as the People’s Protection Units, or YPG, say they became aware of the Kurds among the mostly Sunni Muslim extremists early in the fighting.

As Kurdish fighters were defending the nearby Syrian village of Shiran in September, two Kurdish men with different accents and wearing YPG uniforms infiltrated their ranks, Kurdish officials said. Upon questioning, however, they were captured and admitted to fighting for the Islamic State group, the officials added.

Iraqi and Kurdish officials say many of the Kurdish fighters with the Islamic State group are from the northeastern Iraqi town of Halabja, which was bombed with chemical weapons by Saddam Hussein’s forces in 1988, killing some 5,000 people.

Shorsh Hassan, a YPG spokesman in Kobani, said although most of the Kurdish jihadi fighters come from Iraq, some are from Syrian regions such as Kobani, Afrin and Jazeera. He added that the number of Syrian Kurds is small compared with the dozens of Iraqis fighting with the IS group.

“The fighter who is from Kobani is not like someone who hails from Chechnya with no idea about tracks and roads,” Hassan said.

Thousands of militants from all over the world — including north Africans, Asians and some Westerners — have traveled to Syria and Iraq to join the ranks of the Islamic State group. Turkish nationals are among them, but it is unknown if any are fighting in Kobani.

Hassan said many of the Iraqi fighters were from Halabja, including al-Kurdi. Websites affiliated with the Islamic State group recently published several photographs of the young, bearded man, including some of him wearing the traditional Kurdish garb of baggy pants, and others of him standing in front of Kurds killed in Kobani.

In Baghdad, an Iraqi security official said al-Kurdi was a member of Ansar al-Islam, a Sunni militant group with ties to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the late leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, who was active in the early 2000s. Al-Kurdi later joined the Islamic State group, the official said.

The Iraqi official said al-Kurdi is also from Halabja and is wanted by Iraqi authorities. He refused to give the man’s real name when pressed by The Associated Press.

“Our latest information is that he is in Syria fighting in the Kobani area. He is an expert in mountainous areas,” the Iraqi official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

“He is commanding the Kurdish group within Daesh because he is a Kurd,” he added, using an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group.

Halabja was known as a secular village and the home of Abdullah Goran, one of the best-known Kurdish poets in the 20th century and a member of the Iraqi Communist Party. But in the past three decades, Muslim preachers have become active and have turned it into one of Iraqi Kurdistan’s most religiously conservative areas.

Still, most of the Kurds are moderate and secular-leaning Muslims.

Many Kurds in Iraq were stunned when they learned that Kiwan Mohammed, the 25-year-old goalkeeper of Halabja’s soccer team, was killed last month in Syria while fighting for the Islamic State group in Kobani. Mohammed was identified by jihadi websites as Abu Walid al-Kurdi.

Dana Jalal, an Iraqi journalist who follows jihadi groups, said the Iraqi athlete left Syria in July 2013 and had not been heard of until his death.

Some 70 Iraqi Kurds, mostly from Halabja, went to fight in Syria with the Islamic State group, Jalal said. Most go through Turkey where they say they are going for tourism, but theu then they cross into Syria, and “some even take their wives with them,” Jalal added.

Nawaf Khalil, the Europe-based spokesman for Syria’s powerful Kurdish Democratic Union Party, said Kurdish fighters within the Islamic State group are invaluable in the Kobani battle because they know the geography, as well as the language and the mentality of fellow Kurds.

“A main part of their work is tapping (electronic surveillance) and intelligence-gathering. They might be also using some from the Kobani area to benefit from the geographical knowledge of the area,” he said.

Mustafa Bali, a Kurdish activist in Kobani, said that by having Kurdish fighters, Islamic State extremists are trying to win the hearts and minds of Syrian Kurds in the area.

“Daesh is trying to tell the people of Kobani that it does not consider them enemies and its fighters include Kurds,” Bali said.

2014 Haziran ayında İŞİD tarafından katledilip kaderine terk edilen bir halktır Süryaniler.

Bu yazım Irak / Musul ve Ninova’da İŞİD ( İSİS = DAİŞ ) tarafından zorla evlerinden , toprağından koparılıp Duhok- Erbil- Ankawa’ya sürgün edilen Süryani halkına yardım etmek için bir vicdan çağrısıdır .

İŞİD hepimizin bildiği üzere geçtiğimiz 9 Haziran 2014’de ilk katliamlara, Süryani halkıyla başladı… O kadar çok katliam yaşadı ki kadim halklar, o günden bu yana. Ermeniler, Şiiler, Şebekler, Ezidiler, Türkmenler, Aleviler, Kürtler…

Bu gün, Musul- Ninova- Erbil’de Süryani, Şengal’de Ezidi, Kobane’de Kürt, Karatepe’de Alevi olma zamanıdır.

Sünni arap olmayan her halk bu katliamlardan payına düşeni acı bir şekilde yaşadı. Ta ki Şengal’de Ezidi katliamından sonra Avrupa’dan gözler, bölgeye çevrilene kadar. Kobane’de 37 gündür de Kürtlere aynı acıları yaşatmak isteyen İŞİD terör örgütü, bu kez fena tosladı. Kadınıyla, erkeğiyle, yaşlısıyla, çoluk, çocuğuyla Kürtler ve dostları İŞİD’e karşı onurluca direniyor. Ve Kürt kadını şahsında Kürtler şimdilerde bir tarih yazıyor.

Bir tarih yazamayan, hiç devleti ve ordusu olmayan halklar ise acılarını hep içine gömüyor.

Hal böyle olunca, ilk katliamı yaşayan ve katliamdan sadece canını kurtarabilen Süryaniler ise Avrupa’ya, Suriye’ye, Ürdün’e, Ermenistan’a, Türkiye’ye ve kısmen güvenli buldukları Irak/ Erbil –Duhok- Ankawaya yerleşiyorlar. Haziran ayından bu yana Erbil ve Ankawa’daki bütün Kiliseler, park ve bahçe alanları şanslı olabilen insanların barınak yerleri oldu. Hala sokaklarda Çadırlarda yaşam mücadelesi veren binlerce Süryani Kış mevsiminin girdiği bu dönemde, yağmurların yağmasıyla çamur ve yokluk içerisinde direniyor. Avrupa’dan çeşitli Süryani kuruluşların insani yardımlarıyla ayakta kalmaya çalışan bu toprakların en kadim halkı katliamdan kurtulduğuna bile sevinemiyor. Önümüz kış, zemheri ayı kapılarını bütün acımasızlığıyla çalarken, bir de üstüne salgın hastalıklar gelince!. Gıda, sağlık hizmetleri, giyim, battaniye, barınma, ilaç ve kadın ve bebeklerin ped ihtiyaçları v.b gibi birçok ihtiyaç için yaşamla cebelleşiyorlar.

Burada acıları yarıştırmıyorum. Özellikle Haziran’dan bu yana İşid’in uyguladığı vahşet yüzünden hepimiz acı içinde acı yaşıyoruz. Bir halkın yaraları sarılmadan daha diğer bir halkın acısı başlıyor. Yüreklerimizin bir yarısı Kobane’de Kürt halkıyla, Karakale’de Türkmen Alevileri ile direnirken, diğer bir yarısı da Musul ve Ninova’dan, Duhok- Erbil- Ankawa’ya göç eden Süryani halkında olsun. Ve acılara melhem olduğumuz kadar insanız her birimiz. Buradan Şengal’e , Kobani’ye, Karatepe’ye , Suruç’a ne yardım gerekiyorsa Duhok- Erbil ve Ankawa’ya da aynı malzemeler ve insani yardım gerektiğini hatırlatmak istiyorum…

Ne tuhaf ! 1915′ de tıpkı Ermeniler gibi soykırım yaşayan Süryani halkının soykırımını (Seyfo) bile dünya yeni yeni öğreniyor. O yüzden belki de Alman Dr. Gabriele Yonan soykırımla ilgili bir kitabına Asur soykırımı ( UNUTULAN HOLOUST ) adını verdi. Unutulan bir soykırımın torunları olan Süryaniler, bu gün Irak’ta yaşam mücadelesi verirken yaşanan onca acı içersinde olunduğundan mıdır nedir? Yine unutuluyor…

1915’de, 500-750 bin arası Süryani katledildi. Kalanların bir kısmı ise ana yurtları Mardin ( Turabdin )’den ve Irak’ta 1500 yıllık geçmişlerini bırakarak uzak upuzak diyarlara göç ettiler. Onlar gittiler, biz eksildik. Eksikli yaşıyoruz eksikli…

Kaderi/ kederi belkide çok önceden çizilen bu halk, 2500 yıldır komşuluk ettiği sözde dost halklar tarafından hep katledildi. Süryanilerin tıpkı Ezidiler gibi ne bir ülkesi, ne bir ordusu var. Kobane direnişiyle birlikte yeni yeni silahlanan bu halkın bir ordusu olur mu bilinmez. PYD lideri Salih Müslim’in Kürt halkıyla ilgili medyada yer alan bir sözüne ( Kürtler artık kimsenin askeri olmayacak ) sonuna kadar katılıyor bunu daha da genişletmek istiyorum, soykırım yaşayan ve ezilen halklar da artık kendi ordularını inşaa etme vakti geldi. Amansız düşmana karşı savaşmak için.

Kobane’de Kürt halkının onurlu direnişi Suriye ve Irak’ta bütün etno-dinsel soykırım yaşayan halklara da öncülük etti. Şimdi Irak’ta kendi ordusunu oluşturmaya çalışan ADH ( Asur Demokratik Hareketi ) 1000 silahlı gerillaya, 3000 gönüllü askere sahip. Henüz yeterince silaha sahip olmayan bu ordu kendi öz savunma gücü için bir yandan da yapılanmaya çalışıyor. Bazı Süryani STK’lar, İŞİD ( DAİŞ)’e karşı Asurî /Süryani-Keldani- Arami Dayanışma dernekleri adına, ortak mücadele etmek için Kürt halkıyla dayanışma içersinde olduğunu deklere ediyorlar.

Süryani halkı otonomi elde edemediği sürece Orta doğuda ve yaşadığı her ülkede bir gün gelecek tarihe karışacak. Kendi anayurdunda çektikleri acılar yüzünden isyanlarını hep içine gömerek yaşadılar binlerce yıldır. İsa’ya ilk inanan bu halk, İncil’in öğretisindeki gibi adam öldürmeye şiddetle karşı çıktılar ve bu yüzden ölen hep onlar oldu….

1915’in yüzüncü yılına yaklaştığımız şu günlerde Devlet resmi olarak yüzleşinceye Kadar, bizler hayatın her alanında soykırım yaşayan halkların acılarına ortak olmamız gerekir. Bu ülkede ve radikal İslam’ın kılcının sallandığı her yerde Hıristiyanlar için 1915 bitmemiştir. Soykırım sürüyor… Onlara su olmak, dost elimizi uzatmak, hem insani hem vicdani bir duruştur. Gidenin bir daha gelmediğini, gelmeyeceğini hepimiz biliyoruz aslında. Sessiz sessiz gittiklerini, sessizce eksildiklerini de…

Onlar, Mezopotamya topraklarında var oldukça caddeler, sokaklar, evler hep çiçeğe duracaktı. Bizlerde Mezopotamya topraklarından onların hüzünlü yüzlerinden çiçekler toplayacaktık. Dünya Aden bahçesi olacaktı. Sol yanımız onlarla güzelleşecekti. Gittiler işte… Gönderdik onları. Dört büyük dinin doğduğu ve yayıldığı bu topraklar Habil ile Kayin’den bu yana belki de bu yüzden lanetlendi. Kim bilir? .İşin garip tarafı yeryüzünün bu lanetli topraklarında insanlar, hep kardeş diye diye katledildiler.

Barzani hails Iran’s support for Iraqi Kurds in fighting ISIL

President of Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Masoud Barzani has praised Iran for supporting Iraqi Kurds in their fight against the Takfiri ISIL militants.

Speaking in a joint press conference with Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday, Barzani added that Iran was the first country that supplied the Kurdish forces with arms and helped them fight ISIL terrorists.

He emphasized that Iraqi Kurds would never forget Tehran’s support that came at a crucial timing without any expectation for reciprocation.

Barzani also underlined the need to continue fighting ISIL terrorists and said the final defeat of these Takfiri militants is only possible through a joint effort on the part of all regional countries.

The Iranian foreign minister, for his part, said fighting the ISIL Takfiri militants is a comprehensive campaign that must be pushed ahead until a crushing defeat is inflicted on the terrorists.

“The ISIL is not an enemy only to Kurds, Arabs and Shia [Muslims] but is the enemy of all of us in the region,” Zarif said.

The Iranian foreign minister described ISIL as an “international threat” and added, “We call for unity and the establishment of security and stability in Iraq because we regard this country’s security as our own security.”

He threw Iran’s weight behind any agreement between Kurdistan Regional Government and Baghdad’s central government, hoping that formation of a “broad-based government” would settle all problems in Iraq.

Zarif, however, made it clear that Tehran has not sent any troops into Iraq, saying Iran believes that Iraq has no need to military aid.

The Iranian foreign minister arrived in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region on Tuesday for the second leg of his two-day visit to the Arab country.

The visit came as Iraq has faced turmoil caused by the ISIL in the north and west since early June. The crisis deteriorated in recent weeks, as the militants swept over new towns in the north, forcing members of the minorities out of their homes.

The ISIL terrorists have threatened all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians, Izadi Kurds and others, as they continue their atrocities in Iraq.

Germany ‘prepared’ to send military equipment to Iraq Kurds

Germany has announced that it plans to supply northern Iraq with military equipment. The Iraqi Kurds are battling Islamic State (IS) fighters who have taken over a number of cities and displaced minority populations. report dw.com

German Foreign Minister Frank Walter-Steinmeier confirmed on Wednesday that Berlin was ready to ship arms to northern Iraq. The announcement followed a meeting of the German cabinet where ministers had been deliberating over the issue.

Steinmeier said the government could imagine sending military equipment, “which [could] include weapons.”

“[Europe] can’t be indifferent to the IS advance,” the German foreign minister added, calling the extremist group’s tactics “barbaric” and a “growing existential threat to the region.”

The EU decided last week to back the Kurdish fighters, with individual EU member states deciding on whether or not to send weapons. However, Germany had until now only agreed to provide non-lethal aid to Iraq.

It was not immediately clear what type of weapons would be delivered, as the German government first had to assess what the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters needed.

Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region has seen an increase in fighting in recent weeks as IS militants continue to battle for territory. The jihadists have taken control of a number of cities in the north, including Mosul. Local minorities have fled the IS-controlled cities, where the new leaders have imposed laws to force non-Muslims to convert or face death.

However, Kurdish fighters have been able to make gains in recent days, including the retaking of the Mosul Dam, with the help of US military air cover.
