Egypt Recalls Its Ambassador to Turkey

August 16, 2013 By administrator

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry says it has recalled its ambassador to Turkey for talks, the latest sign of worsening relations between the two countries following the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi and the crackdown on his supporters.

AP_logo_update_20130709The short statement Thursday by the ministry did not elaborate.

The move comes shortly after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused the West of ignoring bloodshed in Egypt and called on the U.N. Security Council to meet urgently to discuss the situation, where around 640 people have died in violence over the past two days.

Turkey’s ambassador to Cairo has been summoned for consultations by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry recently over Turkish criticisms of Morsi’s July 3 ouster.

Relations were warm under Morsi, like Erdogan an Islamist.
