Ireland shuts down, Britain calls in army amid winter storm chaos

March 2, 2018 By administrator

Soldiers have been helping rescue services reach people trapped by heavy snowfall. Storm Emma slammed both countries after another winter storm that originated in Russia hit earlier in the week.

Britain called in the army on Friday after some of the most severe winter storms in recent memory battered the British Isles.

Storm Emma forced many roads and airports to close as it unleashed fresh snow and subzero temperatures onto southern Britain and Ireland.

Many areas were already reeling from fierce Siberian winds known as “The Beast from the East” that had hit both countries earlier in the week.

The British army transported first responders and also helped rescue drivers stranded in the snow. “The Armed Forces are assisting emergency services in ensuring essential NHS [Britain’s national health service] staff are able to get to work and carry out their work in local communities,” the Ministry of Defence said.

Snow birth

In the northeast of England, a woman gave birth on the side of a road after heavy snow forced her husband to pull over on the way to a local hospital.

“The weather was very bad and I struggled to find somewhere to pull over and barely had time to ring 999 when the baby started coming,” Andrew Waring said. “I opened the passenger door and knelt in the snow to deliver the baby.”

An ambulance crew found the family shortly after the birth and transported them to the hospital, where medical staff have been monitoring the baby.

“The baby had arrived shortly before we arrived so the hard work had been done,” ambulance crewman Philip O’Donnell said, adding: “It was a lovely job to be involved in and we’d like to congratulate them on the new arrival.”

Elsewhere, flights were canceled, schools shut and train services disrupted. Britain’s national weather service, the Met Office, issued multiple alerts warning of snow, winds and cold temperatures.

In Ireland, a power outage cut electricity to some 24,000 buildings and forced schools throughout the country to close. Dublin airport also canceled all outbound flights.

The country’s meteorological service, Met Éireann, kept a red weather alert in place for Friday, warning of continuing snowfall across the southern provinces of Munster and Leinster

Kurdistan quickly descending into chaos

December 21, 2017 By administrator

SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq — The Kurdistan region of Iraq is fast descending into chaos, with protests continuing for the third day in some parts of Sulaimaniyah province and security forces using live ammunition to disperse them. Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has threatened to intervene militarily.

Thousands of angry protesters including students, teachers and government employees across the province called for the resignation of the entire Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the main two ruling parties for not being able to run the semi-autonomous region effectively.

“Some of the protesters fought the security forces,” a local journalist from the town of Raniya told Al-Monitor Dec. 19 on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal. “Six people were killed, but the protesters are in charge of the city tonight.”

The KRG has been unable to pay the salaries of its civil servants for over two months following the ill-fated referendum for independence in September that brought on crippling punitive measures from Baghdad, Iran and Turkey.

In Sulaimaniyah city, for the second day, the police, the peshmerga and the security force known as Asayish internal police battled protesters with tear gas and water cannons in the main bazaar. Around a dozen people were wounded, and Al-Monitor observed a man being punched in the face by a member of the Asayish.

Huge queues at check ins, passengers stuck on planes and website offline are among the issues reported by frustrated holidaymakers.

British Airways computers have gone down around the world causing flight chaos for millions of holidaymakers.

Frustrated passengers have told how the IT systems outage has resulted in huge queues at check ins and left them unable to use the airline’s website or app.

Pictures posted on social media also show holidaymakers onboard a plane waiting to be allowed to disembark a flight, while others have been left stranded on runways.

British Airways has apologised for inconvenience caused via Twitter, promising: ‘We are working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible”.

minal 5, BA’s main London terminal, is among those affected by the IT issue.

Heathrow Airport said it was “working closely” with BA to solve the issue and advised passengers to check the status of their flight before travelling to the airport.

The issues come as thousands of families – many with young children – flock abroad for the Bank Holiday weekend and the start of half term.

Russia: US strikes on Assad will plunge Mideast into chaos

June 17, 2016 By administrator

9cca57e1-c400-448e-9f05-c4c4bb72fc2dRussia has warned against a call by US State Department officials for strikes against the Syrian government, saying Moscow is opposed to a military solution.

The Kremlin said on Friday such a move would plunge the entire region into complete chaos.

Dozens of State Department officials have signed an internal document that calls for targeted military strikes against the Syrian government, according to the Wall Street Journal.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Friday that the internal memo on Syria signed by more than 50 US diplomats is an “important statement” that he would discuss when he gets back to Washington.

“It’s an important statement and I respect the process, very, very much. I will … have a chance to meet with people when I get back,” Kerry told Reuters during a visit in Copenhagen.

The memo is sharply critical of US policy in Syria, calling for military strikes against the Assad government.

An unnamed US official familiar with the document said the internal cable may be an attempt to shape the foreign policy outlook of the next US administration.

“It is not a secret to us that there are political forces in the US who favor a military solution [to the Syrian crisis]. But this is not our method,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Friday.

The United States and its allies have been conducting airstrikes against what are said to be Daesh terrorists inside Syria since September 2014 without any authorization from Damascus or a UN mandate.

The attacks have largely failed to fulfill their declared aim of destroying Daesh but killed civilians and targeted the Syrian infrastructure in many cases.

Washington has consistently refused to join forces with Russia in Syria against Daesh ever since Moscow launched its campaign of airstrikes in September last year.

On Thursday, a senior US defense official accused Russia of carrying out airstrikes in southern Syria against US-backed forces.

The accusation came a day after Kerry said the US was losing patience with Russia over its support for the Syrian government.

“Russia needs to understand that our patience is not infinite. In fact it is very limited with whether or not al-Assad is going to be held accountable,” he said.

Responding to those remarks, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he believed the US might hope to use al-Qaeda’s branch in Syria to unseat President Assad’s government.

Lavrov said in St. Petersburg on Thursday that the reluctance of US-backed opposition groups to distance themselves from the Nusra Front has been a major reason behind continuing fighting.

The US could be “playing some kind of game here, and they may want to keep al-Nusra in some form and use it to topple the regime,” Lavrov said.

Video Kurds eye independence as Iraq slides

June 14, 2014 By administrator

Iraqi Kurdistan has been one of the few beneficiaries of the chaos currently gripping large parts of Iraq. FRANCE 24 visited the region’s capital, Erbil, where many Kurds are now starting to talk of the possibility of independence.

The city is just 60km from where insurgent forces of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) have established their frontline. Nevertheless, there is calm in Erbil – part of a region that has mostly been a haven from Iraq’s violence over the last decade.

With the insurgents making gains in north and central Iraq, Kurdistan’s Peshmerga fighters have capitalised on the withdrawal of government troops to seize control of many territories that it has long been in dispute over with Baghdad.

For many in Erbil, the Peshmergas’ success has opened the door for a separation from Iraq once and for all.

FRANCE 24’s Selim El Meddeb and Adam Pletts report.
