Washington: Bono honors jailed Azerbaijani rights activist for seeking the truth (video)

November 13, 2015 By administrator

200581U2 frontman Bono delivered a speech at the Washington Oxi Day Foundation’s Fifth Annual Celebration, hailing Leyla Yunus, an Azerbaijani human rights activist who was sentenced to 8.5 years in jail for speaking out on the deplorable situation of human rights in Azerbaijan.

On 28 April 2014, Arif Yunus and his wife Leyla were detained at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport on their way to Doha, Qatar over allegation of spying for Armenia.

On August 13, 2015, the Baku Court on Grave Crimes sentenced Leyla Yunus to 8 years and 6 months in prison and her husband, Arif Yunus, to 7 years in prison.

“This is a moment to talk about peace as an action. It’s not wishful thinking. Creating peace is a gift to make as well as to receive. Azerbaijan is a beautiful country, run by an ugly dictator, who puts his own people, your people, our people behind bars for the crime of expressing an opinion and seeking justice. What a crime,” the singer noted.

Speaking about the plight of the human rights advocate who remains imprisoned in Azerbaijan, Bono said Leila wants peace and reconciliation between Armenia and Azerbaijan. She wants truth from a dictator, who loves to lie, he said.

“So, what Leila seeks should not be seen as anything other than fundamental right. And yet she is viewed as a traitor and is, as we speak, jailed. We, in this room, all know the free speech and expression are the building blocks of peace. People’s rights are still denied for so many people around the world. Leila, you are on the right side of history. Thanks for your courage,” Bono concluded, expressing hope to ever be useful to Leyla.

Astronaut, Senator and American hero, John Glenn, and the husband of Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh, joined other world leaders lauding the people of Greece in their courageous fight against Hitler’s Axis Forces and the Holocaust and celebrating those who today exhibit the same kind of Oxi Day valor. This was all part of the Washington Oxi Day Foundation‘s Fifth Annual Celebration on October 28, the 75th anniversary of that historic moment that changed the trajectory of the Second World War.

Azerbaijani army suffers 20 losses in front-line clashes – official

September 30, 2015 By administrator

f560bd3a4be3f2_560bd3a4be42d.thumbAzerbaijan’s army suffered 20 losses and had about 60-80 wounded servicemen in the past days’ frontline skirmishes, Artak Beglaryan, a spokesperson for Nagorno-Karabakh’s (Artsakh) prime minister, said on Facebook, citing the minister of defense.
According to his post, Levon Mnatsakanyan reported the losses at a National Assembly hearing, saying that the Defense Army is now in full control of the situation, reacting to the adversary to silence possible aggression.
“As a result, Azerbaijan has 11-12 victims whose names have been verified by the Defense Army; there are almost so many whose identity is now being established,
“Additionally, an estimated 60-80 wounded [servicemen] are in their hospitals as of now,” Mnatsakanyan said, adding that he is personally aware also of material damages suffered in the military operations that saw several military posts and units destroyed.
“Baku hasn’t apparently digested the assaults against the residents of [Armenia’s] Tavush [region] and the soldiers of the Artsakh Republic,” reads Beglaryan’s post.

No, this is the truth about Azerbaijan’s repression – The Washington Post

September 26, 2015 By administrator

f5606921373ebe_5606921373ef9.thumbThe first lady of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva, recently was in Paris, where she opened a photo exhibition titled “Azerbaijan, Land of Tolerance.” An inquiring reporter asked if Azerbaijan is really such a place, noting that its jails are full of political prisoners. “How can you say that?” Ms. Aliyeva responded tartly. “It’s not true.” She urged the reporter to “get correct information.” The reporter then asked her to comment on the imprisonment of human rights advocate Leyla Yunus and journalist Khadija Ismayilova. No answer; the first lady turned her back while security guards pushed the journalist away.
If she wants “correct information,” perhaps Ms. Aliyeva and her husband, President Ilham Aliyev, should read the resolution on Azerbaijan approved Sept. 10 by the European Parliament. It declares that the human rights situation in Azerbaijan has “deteriorated continuously over the last few years,” with “growing intimidation and repression” of rights defenders, journalists and others in civil society. “Peaceful protesters have been effectively banned from demonstrating in central Baku since 2006,” the resolution states, and journalists are subject to “continuous intimidation and harassment,” among them Emin Milli, founder of the online broadcast news outlet Meydan TV, who has received death threats.
Need more “correct information”? Azerbaijan recently forced the closure of the offices of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe in Baku, silencing another important channel for monitoring democracy and human rights. According to the European Parliament, “Azerbaijan has suffered the greatest decline in democratic governance in all of Eurasia over the past ten years.” And the European Union’s dialogue with Azerbaijan on human rights has “not made any substantial progress.”
The day after this indictment of Azerbaijan’s record was approved, the government in Baku canceled a planned European Commission delegation visit that was supposed to discuss a proposed strategic partnership agreement with Azerbaijan. A few days later, Mr. Aliyev met with some schoolchildren in Baku. He declared that vague external enemies “want to subjugate Azerbaijan itself, force us to live according to their instructions.” Mr. Aliyev added, “Today Azerbaijan is in good hands, no one can put pressure on us, affect our policy.” Noting the refugee crisis in Europe, the Azeri strongman asked of the Europeans, “Where is your tolerance and kindness, generosity, where are your values?”
Mr Aliyev has long believed he could repress dissent at home while fending off criticism from abroad. He has lavished millions of dollars on overseas goodwill efforts. More millions were spent to host the European Games this year in Baku, at which the athletes blithely ignored the human rights abuses.
But Mr Aliyev cannot sustain this forever. The horrid treatment of Ms. Yunus and her husband, Arif, and that of Ms. Ismayilova, have gained widespread attention around the world and won’t be papered over by trendy photo exhibits in Paris.

European Parliament Member to Ask European Commission to Denounce Azerbaijani ‘Act of War’

September 26, 2015 By administrator

Michele-RivasiBRUSSELS (ARMENPRESS)—Vice Chair of the Europe Ecologie-The Greens Group and member of the European Parliament Michele Rivasi expressed her concerns over the latest ceasefire violations by Azerbaijan which resulted in the death of three civilians in Armenia border settlements. Rivasi represents South East France for The Greens political party in the European Parliament.

Rivasi spoke to an Armenpress correspondent in Brussels and said that she was “scandalized” by the violence.

“I am scandalized by this violence. We know of the historical enmity which exists between Azerbaijan and Nagorno-Karabakh, but this time it directly concerns Armenia,” Rivasi said.

“I will ask the European Commission to denounce this act of violence, this act of war. It is unacceptable. This is a provocation which resulted in the death of three women which is completely unacceptable.”

“The European Commission has to react to the actions of Azerbaijan,” said Rivasi.

Rivasi continued her strong condemnation of Azerbaijan’s provocations, echoing statements made by Armenian officials that Azerbaijan’s actions were an attempt to halt negotiations on the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“This is done to provoke Armenia and to get [a] reaction from Armenia. That would be the beginning of the end. The European Commission has to denounce the acts of Azerbaijan and also to sanction them. I find this unacceptable and very grave.”

“This is a way to prevent any negotiations. An encounter [between the foreign ministers] was planned and this is a sterile provocation which can be very dangerous for the future.”

“I want everybody to calm down and I want the commission to react in regards to this. This is not only a matter between Armenia and Azerbaijan. European and international institutions have to denounce these acts,” Rivasi said.

“Two civilians were killed and two were injured due to rival shooting in Berdavan community of Tavush region on September 24. Sona Revazyan, 1974, and Shushan Asatryan, 1921, are the victims. Earlier it became known that in another bordering community of T

Turkey: Azerbaijani man arrested for kidnapping two Ukrainians in Istanbul

September 22, 2015 By administrator

n_88839_1ISTANBUL – Doğan News Agency

An Azerbaijani man has been arrested after he kidnapped and held for ransom two Ukrainians vacationing in Istanbul.

The perpetrator, identified as Enver S., 46, was arrested in Istanbul on Sept. 21 after relatives of the two Ukrainians, identified as Roman O., 23, and W.B., 45, informed the Consulate General of Ukraine in Istanbul, which later notified the Istanbul Police Department that the two Ukrainians had been kidnapped for a $150,000 ransom.

After launching an investigation into the kidnapping, police officers plotted a set up and asked the Ukrainians’ relatives to meet the perpetrator in the hotel’s lobby to hand over the ransom.

Enver S. was arrested outside the hotel where the relatives of the kidnapped tourists were staying as he attempted to get into their car, which had been offered as a down payment for the ransom.

The police officers then asked the Azerbaijani perpetrator to tell them where he was hiding the two Ukrainians.

Roman O. and W.B. were freed after the police officers raided the locked room where they had been held.

The police officers also seized an automatic-action rifle, a large amount of ammunition, several fake passports and 9,600 Turkish Liras found in the room.

Enver S. was sent to prison after official procedures were completed in the police station.

Arrested Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismayilova wins US National Press Club award

July 30, 2015 By administrator

national-club-awardRFE/RL Editor in Chief Nenad Pejic had nominated the Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismayilova for the US National Press Club’s Press Freedom Award, and she won it, Azerbaijani information agency Turan reports.

According to the report, the award ceremony was held in Washington on July 29. Journalists and editors in chief attended the annual ceremony to celebrate one of the most prestigious press freedom awards, and support their colleagues in jail. “We will not stop fighting for these journalists until they are free and able to do their jobs,” John Hughes, the president of the US National Press Club, said

Ismayilova has been held in pretrial detention in a Baku prison for 234 days on charges many observers link to her investigations of high-level corruption involving Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, RFE/RL writes.

During the first trial on Ismayilova’s case on July 24, the judge rejected motions to dismiss the criminal case on charges of tax evasion and embezzlement, and to grant Ismayilova house arrest as a substitute for pretrial detention. In case Ismayilova is found guilty, she may face up to 19 years in prison, according to RFE/RL.

“Khadija is in prison because of her journalism…This award is an acknowledgement of her courage and her convictions, but it is also a call to all of us here tonight to condemn her imprisonment and demand her freedom,” Nenaj Pejic, RFE/RL editor in chief, said.

On 5 December 2014, the well-known Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismayilova was detained after being questioned at the prosecutor’s office. Baku Sabail District Court made a decision to detain her on charges of incitement to suicide. The arrest of Ismayilova has been followed by a wave of condemning statements by a number of international organizations and influential representatives from various states. Protests have been organized in her support in various countries; and prominent international outlets released articles covering the topic. However, on 13 February 2015, the Grave Crimes Investigation Department of Azerbaijan Prosecutor General’s Office charged the journalist under articles 179.3.2 (large-scale appropriation), 192.2.2 (illegal entrepreneurship with large income) and 308.2 (abuse of power with grave consequences) of Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. The journalist was fined while in jail. She faces up to 12 years in prison. In early April, Azerbaijani journalist Tural Mustafayev – under whose complaint Khadija Ismayilova had been arrested last December – wrote a letter to Zakir Garalov, the Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan, saying that he wanted to withdraw his appeal. When asked why he had lodged an accusation, Mustafa told the journalist that he was under emotional stress in that period.
