12 Armenian families living abroad want to settle in Artsakh

July 9, 2015 By administrator

2194412 Armenian families who arrived in Nagorno Karabakh from Russia and Ukraine expressed wish to settle in the republic. The families currently spend their holidays in their fatherland, Artsakhpress reports.

Artsakh Compatriotic Union called on Armenians living abroad to visit NKR and spend at least one week there.

“More than 500 families have already arrived in Artsakh since the launch of the initiative. Those people once lived in Artsakh and now have relatives there or even possess houses,” member of Artsakh Compatriotic Union, MP Hamlet Harutyunyan said.

Nagorno Karabakh Republic was included in The Guardian’s list of best adventure holidays for 2015, while British travel agency Regent Holidays organizes tours to Karabakh through Yerevan.

Around 200 mainly Russia-based families arrived in Artsakh on June 20, in the framework of the initiative of president of Artsakh Compatriotic Union, Varuzhan Grigoryan.

Chairwoman of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly Heidi Hautala

Chairwoman of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly Heidi Hautala

YEREVAN—Chairwoman of the EU’s Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, Heidi Hautala, told ArmInfo in a recent interview that Turkey’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide will open doors for peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict.

Hautala said the European Parliament and Euronest have done much to assist Armenia in achieving international recognition of the Genocide and making Turkey recognize that crime against humanity. “If this finally happens and Turkey recognizes the Genocide of Armenians, it will open doors for peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict,” she said. Hautala is sure that “one beautiful day” Turkey will recognize the Genocide against Armenians.

As for the Artsakh conflict and Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian’s statement at the last Euronest session in Yerevan about Artsakh and peoples’ right to self-determination, Hautala said, “In Europe, the principle of the peoples’ right to self-determination has really begun to dominate over others.”

Armenia, Artsakh Conduct Large-Scale Military Drills

November 6, 2014 By administrator

artsakh-drillSTEPANAKERT (RFE/RL)—The armed forces of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh have been engaged in large-scale military exercises in the past few days, a Defense Ministry spokesman in Yerevan confirmed on Thursday.

Artsrun Hovhannisian told RFE/RL’s Armenian Service (Azatutyun.am) that the drills are a scheduled arrangement. “From year to year these drills become more upgraded in terms of their nature, depth and professional features in accordance with the requirements of the time,” he said.

The Defense Ministry official described the military exercises as “multifaceted and diverse,” saying that they involved both current armed forces and reserves.

“The goal of any exercises is to raise the combat readiness of the armed forces,” Hovhannisian added.

The official representative neither confirmed nor denied media reports about assemblies of reservists, adding that the reserve force is also part of the armed forces. However, he did not link the drills to the current situation at the Armenian border with Azerbaijan. According to him, the situation at the borders is relatively calm today.

Azerbaijan, too, regularly holds large-scale military exercises along the border with Nagorno-Karabakh. It has repeatedly threatened to use military force to regain control of the region that broke free from Baku’s rule as a result of hostilities against Armenians in the early 1990s. Authorities in Baku, at the same time, have also expressed their hope to settle the dispute diplomatically through internationally mediated talks with Armenia.

In early August, Armenia and Azerbaijan appeared to be on the brink of renewed hostilities amid an unprecedented escalation of violence in the conflict zone. The sides blamed each other for skirmishes and commando raids in which at least two dozen servicemen were killed.

Relative calm was restored after a Russia-mediated meeting between the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents, Serzh Sarkisian and Ilham Aliyev.

The two leaders last met with the mediation of French President Francois Hollande on October 27. At the Paris talks the parties were urged to show ‘political will’ to overcome their differences and prepare their peoples for peace.

Azerbaijan is in the throes of another fit: Artsakh was indicated on Google maps as the Nagorno Karabakh Republic.

The Republic Seismological Service Center under Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) “raised the alarm” on the fact.

Artsakh defense army says number of casualties never concealed

May 30, 2014 By administrator

May 30, 2014 – 17:44 AMT

The defense army of the Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) Republic has refuted yet another lie of the Azerbaijani propaganda claiming that the Armenian party “conceals the number of casualt179420ies.”

“We always report about the incidents that take place in our army. Hiding data is our rival’s work style, which is applied to avoid public indignation,” the NKR army’s press office said.

An Armenian soldier was killed in Azeri sabotage attempt in the southern direction of the line of contact on the night of May 28. On spotting the rival, the NKR army units acted to repel the attack, with 2 dead and 1 injured on Azeri side. The NKR defense army serviceman, corporal Erik Gasparyan, 19, died in action.

The real number of casualties in the Azeri armed forces is almost twice higher than that mentioned in official statistical data, the NKR army said.

Not to seem proofless, the Karabakh defense army presented the list of the Azerbaijani servicemen who were killed in non-combat incidents, as result of harassment, lack of restraint and corruption.

According to Doctrina Azeri military research, most of deaths in the Azeri army was caused by suicides and injuries inflicted by the soldiers themselves.

Artsakh and Fuller Center for Housing Armenia Launch Partnership

May 29, 2014 By administrator

BERDZOR, Artsakh—The Fuller Center for Housing Armenia (FCHA) team with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Artsakh, Ara Harutyunyan, marked the official launch of fuller-center-berdzorthe Artsakh Project on Wednesday. The launch of the program in the Republic of Artsakh coincided with the day of the Declaration of Independence of Armenia as well as the launch of the FCHA’s 300th house construction.

“It is symbolic that we launch such a wonderful project on this day, which shows the development of liberated Berdzor. Thanks to the Fuller project and its donors for this chance. I’m looking forward to seeing quick expansion of this program in Artsakh, with the support of the government,” said Ara Harutyunyan.

“May is a month of victories for our nation; may the symbolism have its impact on the project too and may it be a prosperous and contagious one with more families assisted,” said FCHA president Ashot Yeghiazaryan in his opening remarks.

The May 28th launch of the program started with the construction of the symbolic 300th home. The partners joined the Khachatryan family of three helping them build their home.

Lyudvig and his parents lost their home during the Nagorno-Karabagh conflict when their village — Maragha — was invaded by Azeri troops and which still remains under their control. Ludvig has met his future wife in Berdzor, the latter had moved to Berdzor from the city of Masis, Ararat region, in Armenia. The family had to earn their living and build a home at the same time. The Khachatryans managed to build two small rooms during the first 4 years, lived there for a while but soon they sold it and left for earning their living abroad. Later in 2010 the couple returned to their homeland. They managed to buy a half constructed house with only the walls built and the roof installed. They renovated the roof with the support of the municipality. Since then the family has been trying to complete the construction of the half-built house and finally have simple housing conditions.

“The launch of this program is encouraging. Each resident of our town came here with an only dream to build and strengthen our land and we all still believe in it; your support will make us stronger in our dreams and we will continue working hard to create a better future for the coming generation,” said Lyudvig, the family father.

Thanks to this collaboration, the Khachatryans will have finally completed the construction of their dream home by the end of year. The Khachatryan family house is sponsored by Minakian and Candan families.

Up to now enough funds have been raised from individual donors to sponsor three families to be assisted in the framework of this project.

All Armenians and interested sponsors are encouraged to participate in the Artsakh Project. The completion of a half-built home is $10,500 and a renovation project is $2,900. To join this new movement, please send your donation to: The Fuller Center for Housing, Inc., PO Box 523, Americus, Georgia 31709, USA. Be sure to add “Armenia-Artsakh” in the memo line. Online donations can be made here. All donations from the USA are tax-deductible.

The Fuller Center for Housing Armenia is a non-governmental, charitable organization that supports community development in the Republics of Armenia and Artsakh by assisting in building and renovating simple, decent and affordable homes, as well as advocating the right to a decent shelter as a matter of conscience and action. FCHA provides long-term, interest-free loans to low-income families. The monthly repayments flow into a Revolving Fund, which is used to help more families, thereby providing a financial foundation for sustainable community development. Up to now the Fuller Center for Housing Armenia has assisted 300 families. For more information, please visit www.fullercenterarmenia.org.
